Today I'm joined by Grant Peyronel of DCFD's Rescue Squad 2. We discuss his formative years as a Corpsman in the military, joining DCFD, the rescue culture of DCFD, and the standards set by Special Operations and its schooling. We also discuss his first few months assigned to RS2, as he experienced multiple rescues, January 6th, and namely the January 29, 2025 collision near Reagan National Airport involving an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, resulting in the deaths of all 67 people on board both aircraft. Out of respect to DCFD members, we kept the conversation light, but the lessons learned are incredibly valuable. Thank you, Grant.

On today's show we have a quick one. This was meant to be a training tidbit for a newly promoted officer, or someone in a float/cover or acting position. What would you do if you are in charge of an engine company and one of your interior firefighters goes missing? While we could expand on this for quite a while, I took five minutes for my Department's OCS class to explain how I would work through the problem. We used Department members to work through multiple fireground scenarios and explained how we would work through the problem; things to consider that you won't find in a General Order or policy. Let me know your thoughts.

Chris Dreisbach, PhD, was one of my professors at Johns Hopkins University, often creating conversation around difficult topics, having us think deeply, and making it approachable. He is one who leaves lasting impressions and leaves your cup full with wonder and awe of his depth in conversation.
We discuss leadership in public safety, moral decision-making, service, purpose and meaning, mortality, humility, ego, and so much more. It is done through the lens of philosophy, theology, and his many years in education. This is not one to be missed!
From Johns Hopkins University:
At Johns Hopkins, Chris Dreisbach is the Associate Director and a senior lecturer for the MS in Organizational Leadership program. He is also a senior lecturer for the MS in Biotechnology, MA in Communication, and Master of Liberal Arts programs and has a joint courtesy appointment with JHU’s Carey Business School.
Dreisbach is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland and has taught in higher education since 1980. In addition to his work at Johns Hopkins, he is a part-time professor of moral and systematic theology at St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute. He is a frequent lecturer on leadership ethics for federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, and on moral and systematic theology for religious organizations.
With a research focus on public philosophy and applied ethics, Dreisbach has authored or co-authored books, articles, and software in criminal justice, the U.S. Constitution, logic, education, ethics, intelligence analysis, the philosophy of dreams, the philosophy of Collingwood, and theology. His most recent books include Your God is Too Somber; Constitutional Literacy: A 21st Century Imperative; and Social and Criminal Justice in Moral Perspective.

Nature doesn’t adjust to your level of skill, so we must prepare accordingly.
We are whole beings, not just singular firefighters. There is a massive physical, mental, and emotional…
Occupational training, daily workouts, growth mindset leadership lessons, and learning through other people’s experiences, across a wide range of industries will make us more resilient, and harden ourselves to the gray area we operate in on the fireground.
Through your support, we will also give back to the profession that has given us so much, through charitable donations and firefighting and fitness equipment.
Be more resilient to what life throws at us, be harder to kill, be forged and unbroken.
