Pages 94 - 103 │Lotus Eaters, part II│Read by Kate Stables
Kate Stables, a Paris resident for sixteen years, is perhaps better known fronting her band thisisthekit. About 12 years ago she also started doing children's music and stories at Shakespeare and Company on the occasional Wednesday afternoon.
This Is The Kit is the musical project of Paris-based, British musician Kate Stables along with Rozi Plain (bass/vocals), Neil Smith (guitar), Jesse D Vernon (guitar/keyboards) and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drum/vox). Listen as Kate rips forward with her hypnotic twang pattern and a voice of rare, unaffected beauty.
The band’s fifth album Off Off On (2020), following the critically acclaimed Moonshine Freeze (2017), sees Kate Stables working with producer Josh Kaufman – New York-based musician, Hold Steady collaborator and member of Bonny Light Horseman and Muzz.

Welcome to Bloomcast, a ten-part plunge into James Joyce's Ulysses presented by Adam Biles, Alice McCrum, and Lex Paulson, live from Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris. Join them as they muddle through this radical, sublime, and often misunderstood novel first published one hundred years ago, in 1922.
In episode two, your hosts provide zippy overviews of Calypso, Lotus Eaters and Hades; respond to listener comments, discuss the centenary; and mull over the arrival of Leopold Bloom (Who is he? Why do we follow him to the outhouse?), animal consciousness, reincarnation, and the point of interior monologue. Guided by Kevin Birmingham, Montaigne, Aristotle, Samuel Beckett, Homer, William James, and (as ever) Frank Budgen, they reflect too on how trauma lives within us, what Bloom can teach us about life and death, and the difference between fictional and historical narratives.
Please share your thoughts on the book and anything you’d like to hear us discuss: [email protected]
A student of environmental policy at Sciences Po-Paris, Alice McCrum runs programming at the American Library in Paris.
In between fits of Joycean nerdery, Dr. Lex Paulson is Executive Director of the School of Collective Intelligence at Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique in Morocco. An adopted Parisian, he teaches at Sciences Po-Paris and writes on the past and future of democracy.
Adam Biles is Literary Director at Shakespeare and Company, Paris. He is the author of the novel Feeding Time, available in French as Défense de nourrir les vieux.

Pages 65 - 74 │Calypso, part I│Read by Eddie Izzard
As a dramatic actor, Eddie picked up a Tony nomination for best actor in 2003 for her performance in A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg on Broadway. She was seen recently acting alongside Dame Judi Dench, playing Edward VII to Judi’s Queen Victoria, in Stephen Frears’ Victoria & Abdul.
Eddie is also one of the most challenging and respected comedians of her generation, having picked up two Emmys in 1999 and is now performing standup in four languages and has performed in forty five countries. Eddie has therefore been unusual in developing a stellar reputation as a dramatic actor and as a standup comedian.
On March 20, 2016, Izzard completed running 27 marathons in 27 days in South Africa as a tribute to Nelson Mandela and raised over £2.6 million ($3.3 million) for Sport Relief, a charity that helps improve the lives of people in impoverished countries. In 2009, Izzard ran 43 marathons in 51 days through England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland for charity and helped raise £1.8 million ($2.7 million) for Sport Relief. In January 2020 Eddie ran the first part of his 'Make Humanity Great Again' journey, an epic charity challenge running through 29 European capital cities over 29 days. And in January 2021 she ran 32 marathons in 31 days in COVID safe conditions on a treadmill at the Riverside Studios in London, again raising money for charity for the Make Humanity Great Again fund.
