  • The Odyssey of Nick Anderson

Nick Anderson of Nanda Knives got the taste of supply & demand at an early age selling glassware he made to an eager market. This lead him down the elusive road of making art with the mindset of being in business. Hear how he ended up living in Thailand and immersed himself in learning to be a knifemaker with Chiang Mai’s famed Bladesmith Che Americano. After a lengthy stay he returned to study with friend of the show Salem Straub only to complete his stay at the beginning of the pandemic.

This was a fascinating journey where the culture and surroundings had influence on Nick’s work and how it formed who he is now.

  • Charlie Lionheart does it all

Charile Ellis is a bladesmith out of South Carolina who make beautiful knives. Creative with a fascination for armor and fantasy, his parents supported his education by getting him to the New England School of Metalwork as a teenager. His education continued and at a young age he was exposed to ABS instructors and other prominent bladesmiths. Japanese style friction folders became one of his calling cards due to the economy of material and his love of mechanics. This gave way to him making his version of Douk-Douk styled knives. I know what you’re saying “What’s a Douk-Douk”? We go into the crazy origin story of how this simple slip joint folder was conceived and how it was marketed and made today.

From forged integral chef knives to huge folding katanas Charlie does it all give him a follow and you won’t regret it.

  • The Voyage of Salem Straub

Arguably one of America’s best bladesmiths, Salem Straub of Promethian Knives, didn’t have it easy. The journey towards the man he is today came through personal growth during turbulent times where it was difficult to see a very positive future. Victory came though hard work, focus and the kindness of others. Salem is synonymous with forging very tight Damascus knives that feel flawless. Salem’s damascus patterns is evocative of what you see through a kaleidoscope and has the perfect repetitions of textiles. His use of forge welding a contrasting pattern along the belly of the blade, that borders the bottom of his “compound grind”, is a design decision that makes the “S Grind” not an after thought, but as integral to the knife as the blade cascading out of the bolster. The word ‘exquisite’ isn’t enough of a description for Salem’s work: he’s established a body of work that is unparalleled in the knife making community.

  • Onur Caglar presses forward!

Onur Caglar AKA “The Scarborough Ripper”, “Chopper”, “Little Evil” and of course @diesineveryfilm was a soldier, is a professional MMA fighter and has transitioned into a successful knife maker, Youtuber and family man. He is one of the most fun people to watch on social media especially his stories on Instagram.

The physical consequences of not trusting techniques learned to prepare him for war and fighting in the cage were life threatening.  The unconscious ability to trust technique and soak it up has made him an extremely talented knife maker with no formal training; one of the many aspects that made Onur as successful as he is..

We covered his time serving in Afganistan, training with MMA Great Danny Michell at Asylum Vale Tudo and what its like being a professional Mixed Martial Artist. As a fighter he always faced taller opponents and moved forward dictating the pace of the fights. I really enjoyed watching all his fights and if you put “Onur Caglar MMA” in your search engine all the fights recorded will pop up. Here are the fights we talked about in this episode.

Callum Gaghan fight (incredible win and show of respect)

  • Will Stelter: Renaissance man
Will Stelter is a talented and driven Bladesmith I’ve known for a few years. We come from different backgrounds and find common ground to create a great friendship. Will is currently building his shop in Montana with his new dog Marty. We had a fun time talking about how I blew him off the first time I met him…(whoops my bad…) Teddy Roosevelt, the trials and tribulations of YouTube fame and how he really felt after dropping the power hammer he spent years rebuilding! This was a fun ramble and Will turned the tables on me at the end. Good man.

  • Pat Quinn: The Modern Day Blacksmith
Pat Quinn is the Executive Director of The Center for Metal Arts in Johnstown PA. This in-depth interview is a journey of growth, where crucial lessons were learned at each stop and influenced Pat’s work as well his personal direction. I don’t remember an episode that was so complete in the story of a guest. The interesting thing it feels like just a rest stop in the development of one of the very few people who to me exemplifies the question I’ve had for years: “What is the role of the Modern Day Blacksmith”. We had a good time putting a timeline together of a shared history where our lives intersected coincidently. Pat will be back for sure. Give this a listen.
