Gluten free food can get a bad rap even thought there are delicious food and products out there. There are people who actually prefer gluten free versions of products who don't even need to eat gluten free.

My extended family is a perfect example. Growing up in an Italian - American family, pasta was a staple. When they visit, they request the gluten free pasta we buy from Garofalo*. It's the best gluten free pasta we've had and even stays soft when cold. Which is a super power for gluten free pasta.

One of the best parts of this Gluten Free journey has been the wonderful people I've connected with along the way. The support I've gotten from these interactions is invaluable. Our Cel Kids and Gluten Free Meet Up Groups are a great way to get the face-to-face support that's proven to be the most important of all.

Research supports this idea. "Support increases quality-of-life scores," Anne Lee, EdD, RDN, LD says, "but our research showed that face-to-face support groups work the best."

Go Green! Michigan State University is joining a small, but growing, group of universities offering a dedicated, allergen free dining hall. Opening in fall 2019, “Thrive” will be free of 9 major allergens - including sesame.

This dining hall will be certified by Kitchens with Confidence, a third-party accreditor that will regularly examine protocols and policies to verify this location as being free of the allergens listed. You can read more about this exciting new addition at Michigan State here.

Josephine Taylor is a 15 year student that has advocated for 3 years for a microwave in her school so that she, and other celiac students, could enjoy a hot lunch like her peers. Her hard work paid off but she isn't stopping there. Her goal: that she help every student get a microwave in their schools so they can enjoy hot lunches too.

Representative Mark Finchem in Tucson, Az. supported her efforts and is rocking to add an amendment to an existing education bill to make sure theirs a microwave in every school for those with celiac to use. Josephine's next goal: to get a microwave for celiac students in every school in the country.

Eleven year old Kristen Adam is on a mission to make sure kids with Celiac disease didn't feel lonely like she did in the beginning when I was first diagnosed. To help with that, she wrote a book called "Dear Celiac." Filled with relatable emotions, the book is charmingly illustrated by Kristen's 3rd grade teacher.

"Everyone's Got Something, My First Year with Celiac Disease" is a newly released book about being a teen with Celiac, written by teens with Celiac! Written by Halllie and Rayna Katzman, the book is praised as being an honest, relatable and upbeat take on celiac. Written in journal form, it's perfect for any child or teen dealing with Celiac.

The authors - Hallie and Rayna - are seniors in high school and were diagnosed with Celiac at age 13. They're active in the gluten free community: they lead a food sensitivities and food allergy club in school and are Celiac Disease Foundation Ambassadors.
