Grappling Rewind: Breakdowns of Professional BJJ and Grappling Events

This week on the show, Maine and Josh recap Polaris 39 headlined by Tommy Langaker vs. Eoghan O'Flanagan for a number 1 seed shot at the 205 pound belt.  

In the main event, we discussed the rematch between Tommy Langaker and Eoghan O'Flanagan we talk about the dynamic of the round structure and Tommy's late surge at the end that allows him to definitively take round three and win the match up.  We talk about his match up with the champion Owen Livsey and some possible strategies that we might see both athletes take in their upcoming light heavyweight title fight. 

In the co main event Yuki Takahashi vs. Shay Montague for the Bantamweight Title, we talked about the strategy and pacing from both athletes with a tight decision win for Yuki Takahashi to become the new Bantamweight champion.

We discussed Callen O'Mahony vs. Franco Tenaglia, that saw Callen O'Mahony Winwith an impressive triangle from the back set up in the first round.

In Julia Livesey vs. Shye Lilly Julia Livesey, we discussed the third round transition that Julia made to finish with a mounted variation of either an arm triangle or smother. 

In Kywan Gracie vs. Danny Mitchell, we talked about the transition game from Kywan Gracie in his armbar win.

We also briefly discussed Shane Curtis vs. George Pearsewith Shane Curtis taking the winby decision

This week on the show, Maine and Josh recap the UFC BJJ 12 headlined by the culmination to the Women's Flyweight tournament betweenCassia Mouravs Adele Fornarinofor the 125 pound belt. We talk about the Split decision, and general complete lack of clarity on exactly what the rule set were the judges are looking for in any of these matches.

In the co-main event for the Lightweight Titlewe discussed Renato Canutovs Ethan Crelinsten, we talked about the pacing from Canuto and Ethan's entries ultimately with Canuto taking a clean unanimous decision for the title.

We discussed Gabriel Almeidavs Gilbert Burnsround 1 Heel Hook and how the entry from Gabriel with a clean back up, led to the finish when Burns got caught up against the bowl wall.

At Women's Strawweightin Thaynara Victoriavs Danielle Kelly we talked about the transition from the guard where Victoria was able to submit Kelly with an Armbar. 

We also discussed the matchmaking between Landon Elmorevs Max Livingston and Landon's straight ankle lock finish in the first round.  

We also briefly discussed Kade Anastasiosvs Ataide RafaelHeel Hook in round 1.

We finish off the recap by discussing the problems with the matchmaking and generally the aimless management of the divisions and product as a whole. Attempting to highlights specific issues that we have with the product as viewers, practitioners, and analysts of the sport.

This week on the show, Maine and Josh recap UFC BJJ 11 Mikey Musumeci vs Bryce Mitchell and Mason Fowler vs Nick Rodriguez.

We went through the results of all of the matches that essentially went exactly as we had previewed them the week prior. 

We discussed some of the matchmaking choices on the card and from the organization as a whole, then discuss the rule that consistently leads to draws for Nick Rodriguez.

This week on the show, Maine and Miranda preview the UFC BJJ 11.

We preview the main event this time at featherweight between Mikey Musumeci vs Bryce Mitchell. With Mikey coming up as the bantamweight champion, we talk about how odd the matchmaking is for this in generally are surprised that it is the main event versus the on paper cocaine headline of the Light Heavyweight Title Match between Mason Fowler vs Nick Rodriguez II. We take a look at their first matchup more than two years ago and talk about the difference between the Fight Pass Invitational rules and the UFC BJJ rules. We discussed the guard sequences in the first matchup and potential pathways to victory for Mason with changes to his strategy and for Rodriguez in the bowl.

At Women’s Featherweight we discuss Aurelie Le Vern vs Rana Willink, with La Vern recently coming off, losing her championship title looking to get back in the title picture.

At Middleweight we discussed the return of Jay Rodriguez vs Kevin Beuhring. We talk about Rodriguez's long absence and the contrast of styles between Kevin and Jay.

This week on the show, Maine and Corey recap the UFC BJJ 10. We discussed Andrew Tackett and his fourth title defense, as well as everyone he called out in his post interview and why everyone should be doing it exactly like that. 

In the recap section of the show we checked it off discussing Andrew Tackett vs Jonnatas Gracie, talking about the counter back, take off of the leg lock attempts by Gracie then talked about the Rear-Naked Choke finish from Andrew in the first round.

In the Women’s Featherweight title fight we talked about Brianna Ste-Marie vs Rebeca Lima. We talked about the early guard work from Lima and then the passing management from Brianna into her signature Head-And-Arm Choke to win the title in the second round.

In the first round of the Women’s Flyweight tournament we talked about Cassia Moura vs Bre Stikk, we talked about Cassia wrestling and multiple takedowns in the first round, followed by a Armbar from the back finish.

Also, in the first round of the Women’s Flyweight tournament we discussed Adele Fornarino vs Carol Brunacio. We talked about Adele's very interesting entries, and the way that she manages her foot position and knee control allowing her to get a straight ankle lock in the first round. We also talked about the potential matchup between Adele and Cassia. 

In the William Tackett vs Fedor Nikolov match. We talked about the passing work from William in the first round and his entry into the light in the second that allowed him to get second round Heel Hook finish. 

In a recap of Jalen Fonacier vs Mourece Ramirez we discussed this being one of Jaylin's longest matches in recent history. We talked about his offense and repeated entries into the legs, taking a clean unanimous decision win. 

In the Vagner Rocha vs Andy Varela we talked about the pacing of Vagner in the first round and then his pacing in the subsequent rounds, then his third round Darce escape, right into one of the first Crescent Choke finishes we've ever seen at a high level. We also discussed his callouts during the post and a potential middleweight title match up in the near future.

In the Danielle Kelly vs Ana Lima we discussed the entries from Danielle leading to a unanimous decision win in her debut.
