  • Episode 101: Getting Prehistoric with Rob and Kelly from Triceratops

Hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July!

This week, we were joined by the minds behind sweetheart brewery and South Puget Sound staple, Triceratops Brewing.  Rob and Kelli have been slinging delicious beer to Washington state for a decade now and in that time have cemented themselves as local legends.  From fighting fires, to raising money for local non-profits, promoting a culture of community, and of course, keeping their local East Coast transplants connected to home with their much-loved Pennsyltucky Lager, inspired by the world famous Yeungling Lager.

  • Episode 98: Roofing, Rapping, and Running a Brewery with Paul Reiter of Great Notion

Welcome Grit & Grainers! We’re back and kicking off the countdown to our anniversary episode with an absolute banger — Paul Reiter, founder and CEO of the world-famous Great Notion Brewing.

Barely 10 years since the notion of starting a brewery even entered their heads, Paul and his partners have turned their beer into something truly iconic taking advantage of digital marketing, creative pathways to reaching customers with new taprooms, and, of course, superb execution of both classic and contemporary beer styles. Paul gives us the scoop on his start in the underground Philly hip-hop scene and how his hustle relates to running his now famed brewery.

  • Episode 97: Where in the World is Brian Strumke?

This week, the Grit & Grain Podcast welcomes back our good friend Brian Strumke of the world-famous Stillwater Artisanal Ales. It’s been a hot minute since we’ve caught up with Strumke and as in his nature, things are always evolving.

Strumke is headed out on another adventure — a cross-country move with a new book deal —and a newfound focus on telling his story via well-made social media content — which have been the driving forces behind this new creative wave. Stillwater continues to bring new innovative ideas to the craft beer world and Strumke expands on his philosophy and approach to bridging the gaps beer, art, and culture.

  • Episode 96—Doug and Phaedra’s Eurotrip

Our best buddy and endlessly talented producer Doug Mackey is out of the country galavanting around London for a few weeks (we are pretty jealous) and, as luck would have it, our other best buddy Phaedra just happened to return from her own European adventure! We figured it was a great day to pop a few of our favorite classic beers from across the pond and talk about it. Phaedra was lucky enough to tour both Guinness and Jameson while in Dublin but also check out a few classic pubs in London (a plan Doug has penciled in daily for his trip of course).

Crack a bottle of bitter if you’ve got one and tune in for the European escapades!

  • Episode 95: Back to School Night!

Shawna Cormier and Jess Keller Poole of the famed Seattle Beer School made the traffic-laden trek down to Tacoma for another afternoon of shenanigans with the Grit & Grain team. We get into what it’s like hosting private parties in the craft beer world, some Seattle beer world drama, and the heinous stuff people say to pregnant women in the craft beer industry.

They also brought bottles of Floodland to share … and OMG!

Crack a beer, sharpen your #2 pencils, and tune in!

Lay down your robes, Grit and Grainers; Today we’re talking to the master of locally-brewed traditional Trappist-style Belgian ales, sans the monks — it’s Todd Clement from Monkless Belgian Ales!

Discover what drove Todd to the world of monastic beer styles — from his humble homebrew days to eventually being crowned “Mid-sized Brewery of the Year” at the Great American Beer Festival. Todd’s affinity for dubbels, tripels, and quads combined with his head brewer’s creative inclinations have produced some of the most exciting new takes on beer styles that stretch back centuries, and we get into all of it!

  • Episode 93: Barley-whining and Chalupas

Grit & Grain co-host Matt McLaren had a weird week. And sure enough, so did Seattle beer.

The craft beer industry is full of shake ups both big and small. This week we let Matt vent about his small shake ups — crappy beer customers, taco meat mead, and his car getting totaled while taking deliveries. But that’s nothing compared to the bombshell shakeup that Fremont Brewing was purchased by Seattle Hospitality Group, who also owns the world-famous Pike Brewing. We get into what it might mean for the breweries involved and how the decision affects the landscape of craft beer in Seattle.

Crack a beer and tune-in Episode 93 for all the tea!

  • Episode 92: Shabby Road and Hazy Black IPAs

This week the team finally sat down with none other than Jon Sleight of the lauded Jon’s Homebrew and Wine Supply in Puyallup, Wash. This seemingly humble, local homebrew supply store has spent years at the center of the brewing community in the South Sound. Jon has long history in the beer world in Washington (including a brewery tour from Bethany during her stint at The Ram!) and in that time has cultivated a passion for craft beer, brewing, and education that has enriched this community beyond measure. Plus, he’s just the sweetest guy ever.

Crack a beer and hang out while we talk about Jon’s love of music, his inspired blog posts on his website, and as promised — hazy black IPAs.
