Today we cover a case that rocked Seattle’s early ’90s punk scene: the life and murder of Mia Zapata, lead singer of the Gits. Born August 25, 1965, in Louisville, Mia grew up in privilege but found her true voice in punk, blues and jazz. In 1989 she co‑founded the Gits at Antioch College; by 1993 they’d earned an Atlantic Records showcase. On July 7, 1993, after leaving the Comet Tavern around 2 a.m., Mia never made it home. Her body was found hours later - brutally beaten, sexually assaulted, strangled with her own sweatshirt - just blocks from safety. Her death stunned friends, fans and a city on the brink of global fame...
