十字架是基督教信仰的中心。「古舊十架」是世界各地的廣播電台最常採用的福音詩歌之一。在各大城市的宗教聚會中，福音的箭頭裝上音樂，將神的真理射進人們的心。它是福音在詩歌裏的縮影，像約翰福音3：16為福音在教義上的縮影一樣。

班納德牧師在密西根（Michigan）衛理公會在寶架岡（Pokagon）的牧師宿舍作本詩的歌詞與譜，1913年6月7日晚在該禮拜堂，由五人合組的詩歌班唱出這具有歷史的新詩。此外曾於芝加哥傳道學院一次聚會中介紹本詩，遂即傳佈各州，以至全球。

寶架岡教會每年開會記念這詩。附近的大石頭鐫刻著 首次將此詩唱出的歌者的姓名。一個十二尺高，寫著本歌 詞的十架掛在密西根的列德城（Reed City）附近的路旁，以記念這位作者。另一路標提醒過路 人說，從這條路往下走，就是「名垂永久的作者班納德牧 師的故居」。保羅與西拉的夜半歌聲震動了腓立比的監獄 ，班納德的心聲照樣撼動無數人的心靈，把他們帶到十字 架前來。
