What if you decided that THIS Valentine’s Day the focus would be on celebrating and loving YOU? Everyone is in some type of relationship but what about your relationship with yourself?
My mom used to tell me that focusing on yourself is selfish. That you should focus on others and put them first. Well, that sounds good, we should focus on others, but unless we learn how to love ourselves how do we love someone else. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, put on your own oxygen mask first…well this is that. You can’t help anyone else if you can’t breathe.
Self-love involves the ability to consistently treat ourselves with understanding, kindness, patience, and gentle perseverance… having a high regard for your own well-being. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

Vindication. What does that word mean? When you are vindicated, your name is cleared. You are defended successfully; proven to be valid; supported, and cleared of blame or suspicion. When you are validated by someone you never saw it coming from it feels really, really, good, especially when you value that person’s opinion of you. It’s like being acquitted of something you didn’t do but were convicted of doing.
Although there are 2 primary people in your relationship, the demise of the relationship is not always because of something you did, but it is something you should learn from. Maybe things happened the way they did because God is protecting you from someone who only means you harm. Maybe you’ve just gotten out of a relationship and need time to heal and reflect. Maybe for such a time as this in your life, you were meant to go it alone. No matter who ended the relationship, remember, it’s not always because of something YOU did.

I know, it’s scary, just thinking about leaving the person whom you’ve given your all to. The one who told you he loved you and maybe who you share children with…the one who has shown you some good times, the one you’ve grown accustomed to…but trust me…the light is so much brighter on the other side of abuse.
No, I’m not saying your life will immediately get better because it won’t. What I am saying is that you will go through a process once you leave, but love yourself enough to give yourself the chance to thrive!
Again, I’m in no way saying that this is easy but I have faith that you can have a better life. You can live without being scared of walking on eggshells. You can build your confidence and experience a loving and healthy relationship…don’t believe me?

This is #3 of 4 episodes in this series. Escaping into the New Year, Going off the Grid.
Week 1 shows you how to mentally prepare to leave your abusive relationship, week 2 explains why we continuously attract abusive relationships, week 3 I shared the traumatic effects domestic violence has on your child…and this week I’m showing you action steps to leave.
Leaving is something you must do, so you can give yourself and your children a chance at life. What you’re doing right now is not living...you’re in perpetual survival mode. You’re ashamed, scared, hopeless, stressed, angry, and depressed and this is no way for you and your children to live.

You probably aren’t even thinking that the child you are carrying or have carried would ever witness domestic violence, but because it’s happening to you, it’s happening to them. Even while the child is in your womb, they feel emotions. Whatever you are feeling, so is your child. Are you feeling fear? So is your child. That same child who is now sitting at the dinner table, as you and the abuser argue and fight, has been conditioned from birth to feel unsafe in their own home. They hear the cursing and unkind words. Your child sees the pain on your face and the tears. They watch as dad chokes mom and throws her to the floor. Even as the abuser drags the victim out of eyesight and slams the bedroom door, the child puts his little hands to his ears to try to block out the ugliness they’re witnessing. Then to escape the explosion that just rocked their world, they go sit in a corner, face the wall, hum to themselves, and rock back and forth.

Your comments are important to me, so let's hear what you think: [email protected]
Statistically, the victim leaves and goes back to their abusive relationship 7 times. You don’t have to become that statistic.
You can leave and not go back. It’s important that you do this so you can give yourself the chance to thrive, so your children can have a chance at knowing what a healthy and loving relationship resembles, away from the abuse they’ve been witnessing. Next week, I’m going to talk about the effects domestic violence is having on your children.
This week’s topic, Why Do I Keep Attracting Abusive Relationships? will be tough to listen to, because you may become triggered by some of the content, but it is necessary to help you understand some of the choices you’ve made.

Do you know of someone or have you experienced back to back lies, innuendos, lost hope, someone telling you something happened that didn’t being forced to have sex, continuous threats against you or your family, someone belittling you to build themselves up, being constantly called – texted—or stalked…all from someone you are in an intimate relationship with…in the name of love? That’s called domestic violence or intimate partner violence, which by definition is a deliberate pattern of abusive tactics used to obtain and maintain power and control over the victim. It. Is. Not. Love.

According to Wayne Dyer: “We do not attract what we want; we attract what we are.” When you have done the hard work of becoming a whole person, not needing someone else to complete you, then you can have a healthy, wealthy, and wise, loving relationship. Do you have a list stating your 'must haves' in romantic relationships? , Of all of the things on your must-have list, which ones are your innate characteristics? Are you the opposite of everything on your list? How is that working out for you?
