  • How to Get Started with Herbs

►►► To enroll in Rooted Medicine Circle (through Jan 25, 2023 – but after that, you can add yourself to the waitlist for 2024): https://www.rootedmedicinecircle.com/

One of the most common questions I get is, “How do I get started with herbs?”

In this episode, I share three tips to help you on the road toward a deep, working knowledge of herbs and herbal medicine.

    After listening in, you’ll know:

► Why are plants your best teachers – and how can you learn from them?

► Why it’s better to learn a few herbs really well than to learn a multitude of herbs on a surface level

► Why community is an important ingredient in learning about herbs

    Show snippet:

“Escape simple, passive learning and really embrace hands-on learning wherever possible.”

Whether you’re looking for a tasty way to enhance digestion, soothe a sore throat, or just enjoy a delicious drink, we’ve got you covered in this episode with Emily Han. • Ponderosa Pine Tree Medicine + How to Make Pine Needle Tea

Pine (Pinus spp.) gives us so many gifts beyond its timber. The needles, pine resin, bark, and pollen are all potent herbal medicines. While towering ponderosa pine trees are not often thought of as herbs, this is powerful plant medicine.

The land that my husband and I live on and caretake is filled with ponderosa pine trees and in this episode, I share my love for these majestic plants. I also explain how to make two versions of  pine needle tea.  One can be potent herbal medicine. The other is more of a crowd pleasing tea that can be enjoyed whenever you feel like sipping a bit of the forest.

    After listening in, you’ll know:

► What’s a sign to rouse your inner skeptic when it comes to superfood claims?

► Are pine needles from any pine species safe for tea-making?

► Is it better to harvest young pine needles or older ones—and why?

► How to harvest pine needles sustainably (and when not to harvest)

    Show snippet:

“Pines are towering gifts of this earth whether they are providing us shelter, warmth, food, or potent medicine.”

  • Coffee with Olatokunboh Obasi

In this episode about the abundant gifts of coffee, I speak with herbalist Olatokunboh Obasi. At the time of this episode, Ola was visiting family in Kenya, the birthplace of coffee. After listening to Ola’s profound appreciation for this lovely plant, I suspect you’ll never view coffee in quite the same way again!

You’ll also receive access to Ola’s wonderful recipe for Coffee Scrub. (This would make a luscious holiday gift, too.)

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► Who should avoid coffee – and when (the answer may surprise you!)

► Why you may want to connect with your own ancestral plants

► Why it’s beneficial to know the history of the plants you work with

► How you can help to shine light on teacher’s teachers who aren’t widely known

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“You just can't take the land away from herbalism… That end product container is nothing compared to where it begins, which is on that earth, the bones and the minerals of the earth.”

For those of you who aren’t already familiar with her, Olatokunboh Obasi is the owner of Omaroti Salud y Bienestar, an apothecary and wellness space located in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Olatokunboh has been working in the wellness field for over 15 years. A yoga and dance instructor, clinical herbalist, nutritionist, and birth doula, she is committed to community holistic health, social justice, and education. Olatokunboh works heavily in community service and Afro Indigenous Medicine on the island and beyond. As a member of the American Herbalist Guild, she was the 2019 award recipient for her notable work in supporting diversity,  equity, and justice in herbalism. Presently, she coordinates Herbalists without Borders International on the island of Boriken, providing community service to people in need.

She also trains local and online students in clinical herbalism and healing arts through her Well of Indigenous Wisdom School. A guest presenter and teacher of many conferences, she’s originally from Africa. Her travels around the world are extensive as she integrates traditional knowledge of herbs with her western education.

She received her Master’s of Science from Maryland University of Integrative Health. Olatokunboh is a mother of 3 young adults. She continues to learn from her children through challenge and tribulation as she shares her journey of life with them and the human family.

I’m so happy to share our conversation with you today!

  • Evening Primrose with Ginger Webb + Primrose Bliss Tea Blend Recipe

There’s so much to love about evening primrose (Oenothera spp.)! In this episode, you’ll get to listen in as I discuss the many gifts of this beautiful plant with herbalist and teacher, Ginger Webb.

As you’ll see, evening primrose is not only swoon-worthy, but it’s abundant. Almost everybody has an evening primrose that grows in their region. And the various species are similar enough in their medicinal properties that they’re essentially interchangeable.

As a listener, you’ll also have access to Ginger’s Primrose Bliss tea blend, which may just become a treasured part of your evening relax and unwind routine.

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► Which comes first, harvesting and making medicine or stewarding – and why?

► What taste signals that an herb may be a nervine (an herb for the nervous system)?

► Why evening primrose can be an ally for resting in a go-go-go culture

► Why relying on plants’ common names can be dangerous (literally)

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Let's take the time to rest. Let's take the time to do nothing. Let's take the time just to be. I feel like evening primrose really allows that.”

For those of you who aren’t already familiar with her, Ginger Webb has been practicing herbalism in and around Austin, Texas, for over 25 years. Trained by Michael Moore at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine, Ginger carries on Michael's tradition of bioregional, populist herbalism, adding her own perspectives and working most closely with the plants of central Texas. She supplies small batch, lovingly-made herbal medicine to her clients and community through her company Texas Medicinals, and teaches herbalism, (including a 200-hour foundational program and a shorter clinical program) as the primary teacher at Sacred Journey School of Herbalism. Ginger currently lives on 6 acres in the Texas Hill Country, and enjoys regular visits from her 21 year old child, Chia, and Chia's French bulldog, Ham.

I’m thrilled to share our conversation with you today!

  • Benefits of Elecampane with Henriette Kress + Elecampane Cough Syrup Recipe

You have a treat in store with this episode featuring Henriette Kress and focusing on the gifts of elecampane (Inula helenium). I think you’ll see right away that Henriette is a very gentle soul and very modest in spite of the wealth of herbal knowledge she possesses. She even shares things about elecampane that were new to me (and that’s saying something, after years of being herb-obsessed)! As a listener, you’ll also have access to Henriette’s effective and yummy elecampane cough syrup recipe.

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► Why Henriette’s herbal website, which was one of the first sites out there, is such a treasure in the herbal world

► Why elecampane is one of the herbs Henriette always turns to when formulating a tea for grief

► The connection between Pokemon cards and Henriette’s educational work as an herbalist

► The wonderful herbal tradition Henriette remembers from her grandmother’s village

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Elecampane is special. It's very grounding, and it's good for coughs and good to get long term stuff out of the lungs. And it's good for digestion.”

For those of you who aren’t already familiar with her, Henriette Kress has been working with herbs since she was about five. She's a bit older than that now, with a head full of gray hairs and all. She attended the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine in Arizona in 1998, and has been a full-time herbalist in Helsinki, Finland ever since.

She has a large website, has written a few books, lectures a lot, and has a distance course in Finnish and Swedish. As you'll see, she's very down to earth and practical.

I’m delighted to share our conversation with you today!
