  • Remains of Missing 3-Year-Old Elijah Vue Found in Wisconsin Woods
The search for missing 3-year-old Elijah Vue has tragically come to a heartbreaking end. On September 13, Two Rivers Police Chief Benjamin Meinnert confirmed that the skeletal remains discovered on September 7 in a remote wooded area were indeed those of Elijah. This news marks a devastating conclusion to a months-long search that captivated the community of northeast Wisconsin.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce today, those remains were identified as Elijah Vue's," Meinnert said during a press briefing shared on Facebook. The remains were found by a landowner preparing for the hunting season, approximately three miles northwest of where Elijah was last seen. The area, which had been extensively searched before, was described by Meinnert as a "thick wooded area."

The tragic discovery came after extensive efforts by volunteers and law enforcement, who had combed through marshy areas, river banks, and even a cemetery in search of the young boy. The amber alert issued for Elijah has now been canceled, and the case has officially become a death investigation.

David Berthiaume, a local resident who assisted in the search, expressed his frustration and sorrow. "There won't be closure for me until we know who killed him and put him there," Berthiaume said. "Nothing killed him back there in those woods. He was killed and put there."

Elijah was reported missing on February 20. At the time, his mother, Katrina Baur, was in Wisconsin Dells, while her boyfriend, Jesse Vang, was at his residence on Mischot Road in Two Rivers. Vang reported Elijah missing, claiming he had fallen asleep and awoke to find the child gone. Both Vang and Baur have been charged with child neglect, and Vang faces additional felony charges. They have both pleaded not guilty.

In April, it was reported that Baur had left Elijah with Vang for extended periods as a form of discipline, a claim outlined in a criminal complaint. This background has further complicated the case, as the circumstances of Elijah's disappearance and death come under greater scrutiny.

Two Rivers resident Roy Randall, who lives near where Elijah's remains were found, shared his anguish. "It's just really rough," Randall said. "You don't expect something like this to hit so close to home. It's too close to home."

As the community mourns the loss of a young life and grapples with the details of this tragic case, authorities continue to investigate. The focus now shifts to seeking justice for Elijah Vue and uncovering the full truth behind his untimely death.

Authorities are asking community members to avoid the area where the remains were discovered while the investigation continues. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the Two Rivers Police Department.

  • Georgia Man Accused of Killing Girlfriend While Her Children Were Home
A Georgia man convicted of wounding a woman in a shooting eight years ago has been accused of fatally shooting another woman on Saturday. Davante Parks, 26, turned himself in to the Richmond County jail on Sunday after authorities say he fatally shot Laquana Lang, 27, in her home in Augusta.

An arrest warrant cited by local news outlets states that Lang’s children, ages 2 and 5, were left alone in the house for hours with their mother’s body. Authorities reportedly said the children eventually had to crawl and walk through her blood to get help.

Deputies identified Parks as the children’s stepfather, according to WRDW. Facebook profiles for Parks and Lang indicated they were in a relationship.

Parks was booked on charges including murder and two counts of first-degree child cruelty, according to jail records. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney representing him.

The Richmond County coroner’s office told HuffPost that Lang was shot at least once inside the home and was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled.

Court records show that Parks had been released on parole in July after pleading guilty to aggravated assault and a firearm-related charge in 2018. According to Georgia’s State Board of Pardons and Paroles, he became eligible for parole after serving a third of his 12-year sentence in 2020. However, he was not released until July, at which point he had served eight years.

Parks previously shot and injured a then-25-year-old woman at an apartment complex in 2016, reported The Augusta Chronicle. This week, McKie told WJBF she was shocked to see Parks’ name in the headlines again and that she hadn’t realized he had been paroled.

“I haven’t been to sleep since I heard he was out, and Saturday I had to find out from a Facebook post that it was him that was out,” McKie told WJBF. “Nobody told me he was out.”

McKie said her recovery from the shooting was difficult, and she had just reached a point where she felt comfortable leaving her home without needing to look over her shoulder.

A spokesperson for the Georgia parole board said that staff with local district attorneys’ offices typically work with crime victims to get them registered with the state to be notified about an offender’s parole status. No one was registered as a victim in connection to Parks’ aggravated assault case in the state system, the spokesperson said.

The state is working on a program that could change the registration process to allow state officials to directly contact crime victims and ask them if they’d like to be notified about parole updates, according to the spokesperson.

  • Charges Expected in Case of Three Chiefs Fans Found Dead, But Not Against Homeowner
Charges could be forthcoming in the case involving the deaths of three Kansas City Chiefs fans found in their friend's backyard in January, though likely not against the homeowner, according to the homeowner's lawyer.

David Harrington, 37, Clayton McGeeney, 36, and Ricky Johnson, 38, visited their friend Jordan Willis's home in Kansas City to watch the Chiefs play the Los Angeles Chargers on January 7. Two days later, the trio was found dead in Willis's backyard.

John Picerno, Willis's attorney, told PEOPLE that after discussions with prosecutors involved in the case, he believes charges will be filed in the coming weeks—but not against his client. "I do not anticipate that he's going to be charged with any kind of a homicide in any way or involvement in that," Picerno said. "And so obviously, we're very pleased with that."

Picerno previously stated that Willis was "unaware of how his friends died."

Harrington’s father, Jon Harrington, previously told PEOPLE that Kansas City police had read him a toxicology report indicating that cocaine and fentanyl were found in his son's body, though the report has not been made public. Authorities have not disclosed official causes of death for the victims.

Picerno believes the person who supplied the drugs to the men could potentially face charges. "I believe that the supplier of the drugs may be held accountable," he said.

Kansas City police have previously stated that the investigation is not a homicide investigation. In response to Picerno's comments, a police spokesperson told PEOPLE: "[Investigators] did advise they are continuing to work with the Platte County Prosecutor's Office and could have some updates in the coming weeks."

    - **Three friends found dead:** The men were discovered in the backyard of Jordan Willis two days after watching a Chiefs game.
    - **Homeowner unlikely to face charges:** Attorney John Picerno does not anticipate his client will be charged with homicide.
    - **Possible drug involvement:** A toxicology report allegedly showed cocaine and fentanyl in David Harrington's body.
    - **Supplier may face charges:** The person who provided the drugs could be held accountable.
    - **Investigation ongoing:** Authorities have not released causes of death and say it's not a homicide case.

In an email to PEOPLE, the prosecutor's office stated there was no new information to report and that the case is still under investigation.

In March, two months after his son died, Jon Harrington said the results of the investigation wouldn't change anything for him. "I don’t really care what they find out now, it doesn’t matter to me," he said. "I’ve already said my goodbyes to David and it’s not going to change anything."

Jon mentioned that an "awful lot" of people attended David's memorial on January 21, which showed him "how much they were missing him."

  • Singer Dawn Richard Sues Sean "Diddy" Combs for Psychological and Physical Abuse
Dawn Richard, a former member of the girl group Danity Kane, has filed a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court against music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, accusing him of years of psychological and physical abuse. The lawsuit alleges that Combs subjected Richard to sexual harassment, groping, and verbal abuse during their time working together, spanning from 2004 to 2011.

Richard, who rose to fame through the MTV reality series "Making the Band," claims in her lawsuit that Combs often created hostile work environments filled with violence and threats. According to Richard, Combs' explosive temper often led to violent outbursts, during which he would throw objects across the room or at people. The lawsuit further alleges that Combs routinely demanded that Richard strip down to her underwear and made demeaning remarks about her body in front of others.

In addition to the personal abuse she endured, Richard claims to have witnessed Combs physically assault his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, on multiple occasions. Richard’s lawsuit describes instances where Combs allegedly strangled, slapped, and choked Ventura, and even threw a hot pan of eggs at her. The lawsuit alleges that when Richard tried to intervene, Combs threatened her life, warning her not to speak about the abuse or face consequences.

“Ms. Richard has bravely added her voice to the growing chorus of victims sharing their harrowing stories of abuse,” reads her lawsuit. “Together, they seek justice.”

Combs' representatives responded to the lawsuit, calling the claims fabricated and suggesting that Richard was attempting to use the lawsuit to promote her career. “It’s unfortunate that Ms. Richard has cast their 20-year friendship aside to try and get money from him,” Combs’ representatives stated. “Mr. Combs is confidently standing on truth and looks forward to proving that in court.”

The lawsuit also implicates those around Combs, including record companies, for allowing his alleged abusive behavior to occur in public settings. Richard’s complaint asserts that companies such as Interscope Records were aware of Combs’ abusive tendencies and failed to intervene.

In May, CNN aired a 2016 video showing Combs assaulting Ventura, leading Combs to issue a public apology, calling his actions “inexcusable.” Richard’s lawsuit follows a separate legal claim filed by Ventura in November 2023, which was settled out of court.

Richard seeks unspecified damages for economic losses, physical injury, and emotional distress. This lawsuit is the latest in a string of legal battles Combs has faced in recent months, many involving allegations of sexual misconduct. Despite these accusations, Combs continues to deny all claims, and his legal team has moved to dismiss many of the lawsuits.

As the legal battles continue, Richard’s lawsuit represents another high-profile accusation against Combs, with both sides preparing for a courtroom showdown.

  • Formal Discipline for Canton Police Officer Kevin Albert Kept Confidential Amid Ongoing Investigations
The town of Canton, Massachusetts, has formally disciplined Detective Kevin Albert following an investigation into his actions during a night of drinking with Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor in 2022. The allegations emerged during the Karen Read trial, in which Proctor served as the lead investigator. Despite the decision to discipline Albert, the exact nature of his punishment remains undisclosed due to ongoing investigations.

Canton Police Chief Helena Rafferty stated that the investigative report into Albert's conduct is being withheld as it involves “ongoing investigations by other agencies.” Additionally, the disciplinary decision, made in a Select Board executive session, is classified as a personnel record, further limiting its disclosure.

Albert's connection to the case has drawn significant attention, as his brother, Brian Albert, owns the home where Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe was found unresponsive in the snow on January 29, 2022. O'Keefe was the boyfriend of Karen Read, who was later charged with his murder. Read’s defense has argued that she was framed, implicating Proctor, the Albert family, and others in a potential cover-up.

Proctor's testimony in the Read trial revealed text messages between him and Kevin Albert, further complicating the case. The defense raised questions regarding Proctor’s relationship with the Albert family and whether this influenced his handling of the investigation.

The town confirmed that the discipline was decided after an independent investigation and a review by the Select Board, but they declined to share any details. Chris Albert, another of Kevin’s brothers, who serves on the Canton Select Board, recused himself from the decision-making process. The town and police department maintain that the records will be made public when the other ongoing investigations are completed.

This development adds to the controversies surrounding the Karen Read trial, with Proctor currently under investigation and suspended without pay from the Massachusetts State Police. Read’s defense has consistently raised concerns about conflicts of interest, particularly involving the Albert family, and alleged misconduct by investigators during the case.

As the town awaits the conclusion of the various investigations, it remains unclear what the long-term implications of this discipline will be for Kevin Albert and how it may impact the upcoming retrial of Karen Read.

  • Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs Ordered to Pay $100 Million in Default Judgment Over Sexual Assault Allegation
A Michigan judge has ordered hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs to pay $100 million to Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith, a 51-year-old man currently serving time in prison. The judgment stems from Cardello-Smith’s claims that Combs drugged and sexually assaulted him during an afterparty in 1997. The default judgment was handed down in Lenawee County Circuit Court after Combs failed to appear for the case.

According to court documents obtained by CBS Detroit, Cardello-Smith was a bartender at a Detroit-area restaurant at the time of the alleged incident. He claimed that after the event, Combs invited him to an afterparty. Once there, Cardello-Smith alleges he was pressured to engage in sexual activity with multiple women. The documents further state that after drinking alcohol given to him by Combs, Cardello-Smith passed out.

The most shocking part of the claim is Cardello-Smith’s account of what he says happened when he regained consciousness. He alleges that he awoke to find Combs having sex with a woman. According to the court filing, Combs reportedly said to Cardello-Smith, "I did this to you too."

While the ruling is a significant blow to Combs, his legal team is preparing a robust defense. Marc Agnifilo, Combs’ attorney, strongly condemned the judgment and called the claims entirely fabricated. "This man is a convicted felon and sexual predator, who has been sentenced on 14 counts of sexual assault and kidnapping over the last 26 years," Agnifilo told CBS News. "His resume now includes committing a fraud on the court from prison, as Mr. Combs has never heard of him let alone been served with any lawsuit. Mr. Combs looks forward to having this judgment swiftly dismissed."

Cardello-Smith’s criminal record became a focal point in Combs’ defense. Currently incarcerated, Cardello-Smith has been convicted of numerous charges, including criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping, which has led Combs’ legal team to question the credibility of his accusations.

Combs is no stranger to legal battles, and this case adds to a growing list of accusations against the music mogul. In recent months, multiple women have accused him of sexual assault and abuse. While Combs denies all allegations, some of the cases have resulted in settlements. One high-profile lawsuit from R&B singer Cassie, who alleged rape and physical abuse during her relationship with Combs, was settled last year. Another man has also accused Combs of sexual misconduct, which his legal team has dismissed as "pure fiction."

The latest ruling also comes amidst increasing public scrutiny on Combs. New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently called on Combs to return the key to the city, which he was awarded during a Times Square ceremony in September 2023. The event coincided with the release of Combs’ album, *The Love Album: Off The Grid*.

Despite the controversy, Combs remains one of the most successful figures in hip-hop. He first rose to fame in the late 1990s as a producer and performer, responsible for chart-topping hits such as "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems," "Bad Boy for Life," and "I'll Be Missing You."

As Combs’ legal team prepares to appeal the judgment, the case represents yet another chapter in a series of legal and public relations battles for the hip-hop icon.

  • South Carolina Supreme Court Seals Files in Alex Murdaugh Juror Controversy
The South Carolina Supreme Court has decided to keep under seal the files related to the removal of a juror during Alex Murdaugh’s double homicide trial. The court also temporarily sealed a motion filed by attorney Joe McCulloch, who is seeking to unseal these files. McCulloch represents Myra Crosby, a former juror dismissed just before the verdict was delivered in the high-profile case.

McCulloch argues that the public should have access to the records to understand what occurred "backstage" during the trial. “The public should be entitled to see what happened backstage at the first Murdaugh trial,” McCulloch said. The trial, which took place under intense scrutiny from January to March 2024, has seen ongoing legal battles regarding transparency.

Crosby, dubbed the “egg juror” after leaving the trial with a dozen eggs, was removed from the jury after an investigation by the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Sources suggest Crosby was leaning towards a “not guilty” verdict for Murdaugh, a stance that may have hung the jury. Crosby, however, maintains she was undecided and not entrenched in any particular position.

McCulloch and Crosby initially requested a limited review of the sealed documents by counsel, which was granted in November 2023. Now, they are seeking full public access to the files. While Murdaugh’s defense has agreed to the release, the prosecution, led by S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson, has declined, citing unspecified "ongoing matters."

Speculation has emerged regarding why the state is reluctant to release the documents. "Why won’t the state unseal?" one source asked. "Because it will prove they lied."

Crosby claims her removal was part of a broader conspiracy involving attorneys and others who allegedly doxxed her to force her off the jury. She believes her dismissal was orchestrated because she might have been the one juror to hold out for a "not guilty" verdict. Former Colleton County clerk of court Becky Hill, who stands accused of tampering with the Murdaugh jury, is also under investigation by SLED.

McCulloch believes that unsealing the records is crucial for public transparency. “There had been several days of proceedings backstage… just the judge, prosecution, defense lawyers, and a few witnesses, including Juror 785 [Crosby],” McCulloch explained. "Once I’d looked at those records, I believed the public should be entitled to see what happened backstage."

S.C. circuit court judge Clifton Newman removed Crosby after hearing evidence from SLED. The defense claims Hill may have influenced the removal through allegations that she invented a Facebook post to justify the dismissal. Crosby and her attorney continue to push for the release of the sealed records to bring these matters into the public eye.

With both sides now ordered to respond to the motion to unseal, all eyes remain on the South Carolina courts. The outcome of this motion could provide further clarity on the handling of Murdaugh’s trial and whether the controversial removal of Crosby was justified.

  • Missouri Police Lieutenant Charged After K-9 Horus Dies in Hot Vehicle
A Missouri police lieutenant faces charges of misdemeanor animal abuse after the death of his K-9 partner, Horus, a nearly 2-year-old German Shepherd, who died of heat exposure after being left in a patrol vehicle for hours in June 2024. The Savannah Police Department’s K-9 unit, equipped with an advanced safety system designed to protect the dog, had its safeguards deactivated at the time of the incident, according to a probable cause statement reviewed by PEOPLE.

The incident unfolded on June 20, when Lieutenant Daniel R. Zeigler contacted his police chief shortly before 6 p.m. to report that Horus, who had worked an overnight shift with him, had died. However, further investigation revealed that K-9 Horus had been left inside the police vehicle since the end of their shift at 4:49 a.m., leading to his death from heat exposure, as outlined in charging documents.

The vehicle was equipped with the AceK9 system, a precautionary feature designed to prevent heat-related deaths by activating the vehicle’s horn, rolling down windows, and turning on fans when temperatures exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the system had been manually turned off, investigators determined. “The deactivation of the AceK9 system directly contributed to the death of K-9 Horus by removing a safeguard to prevent such an incident,” Highway Patrol Officer Justin S. Johnson wrote in the probable cause statement.

The probable cause statement recounts that a neighbor saw Horus’s body near the vehicle that evening and described Zeigler as being visibly upset, “flipping out” and “yelling in disbelief,” claiming that he thought he had brought Horus inside after their shift.

Later that night, during Horus's burial, Zeigler reportedly told Police Chief Dave Vincent, "It’s my fault." This admission was later corroborated by a witness present at the burial, according to the documents.

A key part of the investigation included a test conducted six days after Horus’s death to assess whether the AceK9 system had been functioning properly. Investigators parked the K-9 vehicle in direct sunlight with the ignition off, allowing the interior temperature to rise. As expected, once the temperature hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the system activated—rolling down windows, sounding the horn, and turning on a fan. This confirmed that the system was fully operational on the day of the incident but had been manually disabled.

Temperatures in the area on June 20 reached a high of 88 degrees, making it a dangerous situation for any animal left in a hot vehicle for an extended period.

Zeigler had been with K-9 Horus since the dog’s arrival at the Savannah Police Department in February 2021, following an eight-week training program funded by community donations. Horus had quickly become a valuable asset to the department, working alongside Zeigler to patrol the streets.

The tragedy has raised questions about negligence and responsibility, especially considering the vehicle's advanced safety features. Zeigler’s decision to turn off the AceK9 system directly resulted in Horus’s death, and he now faces a misdemeanor animal abuse charge.

Zeigler’s future with the Savannah Police Department remains uncertain, and his case will proceed in court as the community mourns the loss of a dedicated K-9 officer.

  • Bryan Kohberger's Trial Moved from Moscow Due to Concerns Over Media Coverage and Community Bias
The upcoming trial for Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, will no longer be held in Moscow, the college town where the murders took place. In a ruling filed on Sept. 6, Latah County Judge John C. Judge granted Kohberger’s defense team’s motion for a change of venue, citing concerns about media coverage and the potential for bias in the close-knit community of Moscow.

"Considering the undisputed evidence presented by the defense, the extreme nature of the news coverage in this case, and the smaller population in Latah County, the defense has met the rather low standard of demonstrating a ‘reasonable likelihood’ that prejudicial news coverage will compromise a fair trial in Latah County,” the judge wrote in the order. As a result, the trial, initially expected to begin in June 2025, will be moved to another location, though the new venue has yet to be determined.

Judge also pointed out logistical challenges in holding the trial in Latah County, noting that the courthouse lacks the necessary staff and space to accommodate both the prosecution and defense teams, as well as adequate security for the high-profile trial. “The Latah County Sheriff’s Office does not have enough officers to ensure security,” Judge added.

Bryan Kohberger, a former Ph.D. student studying criminal justice and criminology at Washington State University, is facing four counts of murder and one count of burglary in connection with the stabbing deaths of Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. The four students were found dead in an off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022. Kohberger has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Two additional roommates in the house were unharmed during the attack and have been ruled out as suspects. The investigation gained national attention, particularly because of Kohberger's academic background and the brutality of the murders. Kohberger was arrested nearly seven weeks after the killings while visiting family in Pennsylvania for the holidays.

Investigators connected Kohberger to the crime scene through DNA evidence found on a knife sheath left behind in the bed where Mogen and Goncalves were discovered. According to a probable cause affidavit, Kohberger's cell phone also pinged in the area of the victims' residence at least 12 times before the night of the murders.

Despite the delays in finalizing the trial location, Kohberger’s defense has raised several concerns about the ability to secure a fair trial. The new trial location and the judge who will oversee the case are expected to be announced soon.

As Kohberger’s defense team continues to prepare, the court's decision to move the trial highlights the complexities surrounding high-profile cases in small, close-knit communities like Moscow, Idaho.

  • Karen Read Denies Guilt in ABC Interview, Prosecution Prepares for Retrial in 2025
Karen Read, a 44-year-old woman from Mansfield, Massachusetts, who is accused of second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, broke her silence in a never-before-seen interview aired on ABC’s *20/20* on Friday. In the interview, Read spoke at length about the night O'Keefe, a Boston police officer, was found dead in a snowbank outside a home in Canton after a night of drinking at two local bars.

Read, whose first trial ended in a mistrial in July, recounted the moment she discovered O'Keefe’s body on the morning of January 29, 2022. “As you come down Fairview, there’s a bit of a decline, and it curves to the left, and my eyes are peeled, and I said, ‘He’s right [expletive] there,’” she told *20/20*.

Read jumped out of the car and found O’Keefe on the ground with injuries, including two black eyes. “His eyes were shut, and he had spots of blood in different areas on his face, and he was still — not stiff, but still,” she said. O’Keefe was not dressed for the blizzard conditions that night, which raised further questions during the trial about the circumstances leading to his death.

The prosecution claims Read and O'Keefe had been fighting and that she struck him with her SUV after leaving a party. "Would you say that you were angry with John that night?" *20/20* host Matt Gutman asked. "Yes," Read admitted. However, the defense argues that O'Keefe was beaten up and dragged outside after an altercation in the basement of fellow officer Brian Albert’s home.

The defense contends that O’Keefe's injuries were inconsistent with being hit by a car. They allege that O’Keefe was beaten and bitten by a dog inside the house before being left outside to die. Read went on to suggest a cover-up involving other officers present at the scene, telling Gutman, “Because he’s dead,” when asked why anyone would want to conceal the truth.

Prosecutors have faced several setbacks during the case, including a mix-up involving surveillance footage and a Massachusetts State Police trooper being suspended after inappropriate text messages surfaced. Despite these issues, the prosecution is moving forward with a retrial set for January 27, 2025. Judge Beverly Cannone recently denied Read’s request to dismiss the second-degree murder charge and another charge, signaling that the case will proceed.

In addition to the criminal charges, O’Keefe’s family has filed a civil lawsuit against Read and the two bars where the couple had been drinking that night. The family argues that Read’s defense has “outrageously created a false narrative” about O’Keefe’s death and seeks damages for both compensatory and punitive losses.

O’Keefe’s cousin, Renay, expressed the family’s grief during the *20/20* interview. “He was lost in this whole circus. And I think none of us want him to be lost. I think that’s the saddest part of this whole situation, that he’s not remembered as who he is and who he was during this whole thing,” she said.

As both sides prepare for the retrial, the case continues to captivate public attention, with many eagerly awaiting the outcome. For now, the legal proceedings are moving forward, and the civil lawsuit will likely follow after the criminal trial concludes.
