  • Court Reveals Horrifying Details of Return to Nature Funeral Home's Conditions
Previously undisclosed and deeply disturbing details about the operations of the Return to Nature Funeral Home came to light during a recent court hearing, leaving those in the El Paso County courtroom shocked and heartbroken. The hearing provided graphic evidence of the horrifying conditions discovered at the funeral home in Penrose, Colorado, back in October.

Carie Hallford, one of the funeral home's co-owners, faced a preliminary hearing on multiple felony charges related to the improper storage of nearly 200 bodies, primarily comprised of family members of victims who attended the hearing.

FBI Agent Andrew Cohen testified, revealing a harrowing picture of the 2500-square-foot facility. The facility, divided into 14 rooms labeled alphabetically, housed adult, infant, and fetus bodies. Shockingly, up to 43 bodies were found stacked in a single room, and some rooms were initially inaccessible due to the high stacking of bodies.

The evidence unveiled during the hearing depicted a horrifying scene, with commercial shelves used to store bodies, bodies strewn across the floor or placed in hospital beds. The bodies were wrapped in plastic and secured with duct tape, while some were fully exposed, dressed in clothes, or covered in mold and insects.

Lisa Ostly, whose father was identified at the funeral home, sat through the entire three-hour hearing and expressed, "It just brings all the grief back. But I owe it to my dad to see everything that I can see, to know and try to understand what happened."

The once-white/cream-colored floor of the funeral home had turned brown and red from bodily fluids, requiring investigators to place cardboard throughout the building to prevent slipping. Insects were pervasive, making some rooms appear as if the carpet was black with brown patches.

Shockingly, alongside the bodies and other items such as insect repellent, fans, and cleaning supplies, investigators discovered multiple bags of Quikrete concrete mix. This discovery led many family members to suspect that the ashes they received were actually concrete. Agent Cohen confirmed that the Hallfords had purchased over 660 pounds of Quikrete from Home Depot, as indicated in their bank records.

Agent Cohen also revealed that the issues extended beyond failed cremations. The funeral home had been tasked with burying a veteran at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery, but when the veteran's casket was exhumed, investigators found the remains of a woman wrapped in plastic bags and duct tape inside.

Disturbing texts exchanged between Carie and her husband, Jon Hallford, were presented during the hearing. In these texts, they casually discussed the bodies at Penrose Funeral Home. One text from Jon mentioned, "I want to take a shower… While I was making a transfer, I got people juice on me…," followed by a discussion about his burger order in the same text, a juxtaposition that family members found inhumane.

Surveillance footage reviewed by Agent Cohen showed the couple arriving at the funeral home in September 2023, with Jon bringing at least four plastic bags presumed to contain bodies on a cart. Text messages between the couple further revealed financial troubles and discussions about the growing issues at Penrose Funeral Home.

The shocking revelations from the court hearing shed light on the disturbing conditions and practices at the Return to Nature Funeral Home, leaving the community and the victims' families in disbelief and mourning. The legal proceedings continue as authorities seek justice for the victims and accountability for those responsible.

  • eBay to Pay $3 Million Fine for Criminal Charges Stemming from Harassment Campaign
eBay, the e-commerce giant, has been ordered to pay a $3 million fine to settle criminal charges linked to a disturbing harassment campaign against a Massachusetts couple. The charges include stalking through interstate travel, stalking through electronic communications, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice. The couple was targeted due to their online newsletter's critical coverage of eBay in 2019.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that eBay entered into a deferred prosecution agreement, admitting to its criminal conduct. In addition to the $3 million criminal penalty, eBay is required to retain an independent corporate compliance monitor for three years and make substantial improvements to its compliance program.

"eBay engaged in absolutely horrific, criminal conduct. The company's employees and contractors involved in this campaign put the victims through pure hell, in a petrifying campaign aimed at silencing their reporting and protecting the eBay brand," stated Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy.

The victims, identified as Ina and David Steiner, co-founded EcommerceBytes, a website that reported on e-commerce companies, including eBay. The harassment campaign began after Ina wrote an article about eBay suing Amazon for stealing its sellers. Following this article, eBay's then-CEO, Devin Wenig, allegedly sent a message stating, "If we are ever going to take her down... now is the time." Jim Baugh, eBay's former Senior Director of Safety and Security, referred to Ina as a "biased troll who needs to get BURNED DOWN."

The harassment campaign against the Steiners involved disturbing deliveries to their home, including a book on surviving the death of a spouse, a bloody pig mask, a fetal pig, a funeral wreath, live spiders, and cockroaches. It also included private messages criticizing the newsletter's content, surveillance, and the installation of a GPS tracking device on their car. Craigslist posts inviting the public for sexual encounters at the couple's home were part of the harassment.

After the victims contacted local police, Baugh made false statements and deleted digital evidence related to the campaign. Baugh, described as the ringleader, was sentenced to 57 months in prison in September 2022, and other former eBay employees or contractors received sentences ranging from 12 to 18 months in prison.

In a statement, the Steiners emphasized the damaging impact of eBay's actions on them emotionally, psychologically, physically, reputationally, and financially. They also filed a civil lawsuit against eBay and its former employees.

eBay's current CEO, Jamie Iannone, expressed the company's responsibility for the misconduct of its former employees and its commitment to upholding high standards of conduct and ethics. "eBay remains committed to making things right with the Steiners," Iannone stated.

This settlement marks a significant development in a disturbing case of corporate harassment and misconduct, highlighting the legal consequences faced by a major company for its employees' criminal actions.

  • DNA Evidence Ties Accused Long Island Serial Killer to "Gilgo Beach Four" Murders
Accused Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann faces new charges after DNA evidence linked him to the notorious "Gilgo Beach Four" murders. In an indictment unsealed in Suffolk County court, Heuermann, 60, was charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, one of the victims whose remains were discovered along the Sound Shore in 2010. These murders had remained unsolved for 13 years.

The breakthrough in the case came as investigators connected Brainard-Barnes' murder to Heuermann through DNA evidence. Specifically, a female hair found on the victim's body was matched to samples collected from Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup, and their 26-year-old daughter, Victoria. Remarkably, both women were out of town when all four of the murders took place, including the time of Brainard-Barnes' death in Atlantic City, as detailed in the indictment.

Prosecutors revealed disturbing details about Heuermann's alleged activities. He reportedly texted escorts while his wife and children were away, engaging in sick online searches such as "Very skinny white teen tied up porn," "tied up fat girl porn," "medieval torture of women," and "how I was raped audio." Investigators also discovered a collection of violent, bondage, and torture pornography on Heuermann's electronic devices. Furthermore, they found that he had used his computer to contact escorts, using the names "Andy" or "Andrew," which correspond to his middle name.

One of the escorts allegedly received a text message from Heuermann on March 1, 2020, stating, "Hi, I saw your ad and wanted to see if we could set something up later." This chilling exchange occurred as the escort asked if the following day would work, to which Heuermann responded, "I am working all day. I was free today; my wife is out for the day… working Monday."

While Rex Heuermann pleaded not guilty to these new charges, his wife, Asa Ellerup, and daughter, Victoria Heuermann, were present at the arraignment but did not address reporters.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney had previously identified Rex Heuermann as the primary suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes. He had expressed that his office was close to linking Heuermann to her case.

Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, was the first of the "Gilgo Four" to disappear on July 9, 2007. Her body was later discovered on December 13, 2010, and she was reportedly bound with a belt stamped with the initials "WH," which investigators have suggested may have belonged to Heuermann's late grandfather, William Heuermann.

The "Gilgo Four" case involved the discovery of more than ten sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway between December 2010 and April 2011. Three other victims who worked as escorts, Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, and Megan Waterman, became known as the "Gilgo Four."

As this shocking case unfolds, investigators continue their efforts to seek justice for the victims and their families, as well as to provide answers in a case that has haunted Long Island for over a decade.

  • Pennsylvania Woman Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Boyfriend's 1-Year-Old Daughter
A shocking case has emerged in Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old woman, Alesia Owens, has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of her boyfriend's 1-year-old daughter, Iris Alfera. Prosecutors have charged Owens with multiple offenses, including criminal homicide, alleging that she poisoned the young girl with household items. Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry made the announcement regarding the arrest.

The incident dates back to June 2023 when emergency responders were called to the home of Iris' father in New Castle, located northeast of Pittsburgh. At that time, Iris lived with her father and Alesia Owens. Responders found the 1-year-old child unresponsive. Iris was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention and subsequently airlifted to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Tragically, she passed away on June 29, 2023.

The cause of Iris' death was determined through an autopsy conducted by medical examiners. The examination revealed that she succumbed to organ failure caused by acetone poisoning, a devastating revelation.

Disturbingly, investigators from the New Castle Police Department uncovered evidence suggesting that Alesia Owens had researched household products with fatal potential for children in the months leading up to the tragic incident. According to the attorney general's office, Owens conducted numerous online searches between February and June, specifically related to the circumstances of the toddler's death.

These searches allegedly included inquiries about household products that could prove deadly to a child, such as water beads, batteries, and nail polish. Owens' online queries also featured phrases like "beauty products that are poisonous to kids" and "medications leading to accidental poisoning deaths in children."

Furthermore, it has come to light that Iris Alfera had been hospitalized several months before her untimely demise. During this previous hospitalization, she had ingested several harmful objects, including approximately 20 water beads, batteries, and a metal screw. Although Lawrence County Children and Youth Services were alerted following this incident, no charges were initially filed, as reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Currently, Alesia Owens is being held at the Owens County Jail, having been denied bail. The circumstances surrounding this case are undeniably tragic and heart-wrenching, leaving the community in shock. Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry expressed her sentiments, stating, "The details of this case are heartbreaking. It is hard to fathom someone taking deliberate steps to harm a completely helpless child, then mislead investigators about what happened."

As this deeply distressing case unfolds, many are left grappling with the unsettling nature of the allegations against Alesia Owens and the profound loss of young Iris Alfera. Prosecutors will continue their efforts to seek justice for the innocent child, and the community watches closely as the legal proceedings progress.

  • Attorney for Chad Daybell, Accused of Murder and Conspiracy, Requests Withdrawal from Case
In a surprising development, the attorney representing Chad Daybell, a man charged with three counts of murder and conspiracy, has requested to withdraw from his case. Chad Daybell is accused of playing a role in the deaths of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and aiding convicted murderer Lori Vallow in the killing of her two children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. Additionally, he faces two counts of insurance fraud related to his wife's murder.

Prosecutors assert that Daybell and Vallow conspired to commit these gruesome crimes in late 2019, just before their marriage in Hawaii. The couple reportedly met at one of Chad Daybell's religious conferences and bonded over shared beliefs in a doomsday cult, which investigators believe played a central role in the tragic events.

The motion to withdraw from Chad Daybell's case was filed by his attorney, John Prior, who has been representing him since 2021. Prior's motion stated that the case, which involves prosecutors seeking the death penalty, would demand his continuous and extensive efforts "around the clock, more than full-time for more than four months without compensation and without the assistance of any other counsel."

"Mr. Daybell cannot pay for counsel's continued services, and Mr. Daybell seeks the appointment of two capital qualified attorneys to represent him in this matter," read the motion, as obtained by East Idaho News.

It's worth noting that the court had previously declared Chad Daybell indigent, indicating his inability to afford legal representation and entitling him to court-appointed counsel. In his filing, John Prior mentioned that he had discussed this decision with Chad Daybell and requested the court to appoint two qualified public defenders to handle his case.

John Prior also reached out to an attorney willing to take over Chad Daybell's case; however, the request to be qualified as a public defender in a case involving the death penalty has not yet been approved by the Public Defense Commission. Idaho currently has only 13 public defenders qualified to lead capital punishment cases, according to the commission's roster.

"The time for him to be of any assistance for me in preparing for this case is long gone," Prior wrote.

Chad Daybell's trial is scheduled to commence in April in Ada County, but it remains uncertain whether these recent developments might lead to delays in the proceedings.

Last year, Lori Vallow was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and grand theft in connection with the deaths of her two youngest children. She was also convicted of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the death of Chad Daybell's first wife. Vallow was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on July 31. She is facing separate charges in Arizona related to conspiracy to murder her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, and conspiracy to murder her niece's estranged husband, Brandon Boudreaux.

  • South Carolina Father Filmed Finding 5-Year-Old Son's Body in 1989 Now Accused of His Murder
A chilling twist in a decades-old cold case has shocked the community, as a father who was once captured on film discovering his 5-year-old son's lifeless body is now facing murder charges. Victor Turner and his wife, Megan Turner, were arrested in Cross Hill by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in connection to the death of Justin Turner.

In an emotional press conference, Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis revealed that Victor Turner stands accused of strangling his own son in the early hours of March 3, 1989. On that fateful day, deputies responded to the Turner family's residence in Moncks Corner after Victor and Megan Turner reported not seeing Justin leaving for or returning from school.

According to a statement from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office in 2019, Justin had intended to catch the school bus with a neighbor but never made it onto the bus that morning. Megan Turner was in the shower at the time and did not accompany him outside.

The ensuing search for Justin lasted two agonizing days and concluded when Victor Turner made a grim discovery inside the family's camper, parked outside their home. Archival news footage from the search captured the heart-wrenching moment when Victor, peering into the camper, broke into tears, and exclaimed, "My son's in there."

However, an arrest warrant, as reported by Charleston's WCSC, alleges a disturbing twist. Instead of immediately checking for signs of life, Victor Turner backed out of the camper. Investigators have accused the couple of having precise knowledge of where Justin's body was, describing their behavior during the search as "deliberate" and "obvious."

Sheriff Lewis added that the crime scene appeared to have been staged when deputies first arrived.

Megan Turner, known as Pamela Turner at the time, had previously been arrested in connection to Justin's disappearance. However, her case was dismissed without prejudice due to a lack of evidence. Following this, she changed her name, and the Turners relocated to an undisclosed location, effectively disappearing from the radar.

Decades passed before local cold case investigators decided to re-examine the tragic case in April 2021. Utilizing cutting-edge forensic technology and pursuing new leads, they uncovered crucial evidence shedding light on Justin's fate.

Forensic analysis and autopsy results revealed that Justin's body had been placed inside the Turners' camper shortly after his death. Furthermore, a ligature discovered at their home matched the wounds around Justin's neck, as reported by WCSC.

The public defenders' office in Berkeley County and the attorneys representing the Turners have not yet responded to requests for comments.
This shocking development in a long-dormant case has sent shockwaves through the community, reopening old wounds and raising new questions about what truly transpired on that tragic day in 1989. As the legal proceedings unfold, many await justice for Justin Turner and answers to the mysteries that have haunted this case for decades.

  • Justice Department Pursues Death Penalty for Buffalo Supermarket Shooter
The U.S. Justice Department has announced its intent to seek the death penalty for Payton Gendron, the individual responsible for a racially motivated shooting that claimed the lives of 10 people at a Tops Supermarket in Buffalo, New York, in May 2022. This decision marks a significant development in a case that has gripped the nation.

Federal prosecutors filed a court document outlining their rationale for pursuing the death penalty, stating, "United States believes the circumstances in Counts 11-20 of the Indictment are such that, in the event of a conviction, a sentence of death is justified." Gendron had previously signaled a willingness to plead guilty to federal charges if the death penalty were off the table.

The indictment against Gendron included 27 counts, with 14 violations of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, encompassing hate crimes resulting in death, attempts to kill injured individuals, and attempted killings of additional Black individuals in and around the supermarket. In addition to these hate crime charges, Gendron faced 13 firearms offenses.

The motivations behind the attack were deeply rooted in racist ideology, as Gendron subscribed to a far-right conspiracy known as replacement theory. His goal was to "inspire others to commit similar attacks," as stated in a criminal complaint. The rifle used in the shooting bore markings with phrases such as "here's your reparations" and "the great replacement."

The decision to seek the death penalty by the Justice Department follows over a year of deliberations. Attorney General Merrick Garland had previously expressed concerns about the death penalty, and President Joe Biden had campaigned on abolishing it at the federal level. However, in the absence of a formal policy, the DOJ had engaged in discussions regarding a "worst-of-the-worst" threshold for cases involving extreme acts of hate-fueled violence.

In response to the DOJ's announcement, the defense team expressed deep disappointment. Sonya Zoghlin, an assistant federal defender, conveyed their frustration, suggesting that the government's efforts could be better spent addressing the underlying issues that facilitated the crime, including easy access to deadly weapons and the failure of social media companies to moderate hateful rhetoric online.

Gendron had previously faced sentencing on state charges, resulting in a life imprisonment without parole sentence in February 2023. During that sentencing hearing, Gendron briefly offered an apology, acknowledging his actions and the pain he caused. He pleaded guilty to 15 charges, including domestic terrorism motivated by hate, murder, and attempted murder.

While the pursuit of the death penalty has been met with mixed reactions, some family members of the victims welcomed the decision. Mark Talley, the son of shooting victim Geraldine Talley, expressed his desire to see Gendron suffer and stated, "As long as I'm alive, I wanna be able to see him suffer." Others in the community echoed the sentiment that the death penalty should serve as a deterrent against such heinous crimes.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also expressed support for the DOJ's decision, highlighting the gravity of the attack and its impact on the community. The next court date in the case is scheduled for February 2, where the legal proceedings will continue to unfold.

Natalia Grace Barnett, widely recognized for her involvement in the controversial adoption case often likened to the movie "Orphan," has broken her silence after a gag order expired during legal proceedings. Natalia recently made her first public appearance in the Investigative Discovery docuseries “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks." Following this, she has taken to GoFundMe, seeking support for a fresh start in life.

The fundraiser, under the name "Natalyah Mans," was launched on GoFundMe with a goal of $20,000. As of the latest update, the fundraiser has received an overwhelming response, securing $12,128 towards its objective from donors across the United States. Many supporters have left comments of encouragement and solidarity alongside their donations.

Natalia Grace Barnett, known by the name Nataliah Mans, was originally adopted by the Barnett family of Indiana in 2010. Her adoption and background became the center of a highly publicized controversy when allegations emerged that she might not be the age initially claimed. A DNA test recently confirmed that Natalia was indeed a child when she was adopted, putting an end to the long-standing disputes.

The case gained substantial media attention as the Barnetts faced legal battles and accusations of abandonment. Charges against them, including abandonment, were eventually dismissed or resolved. Despite the legal developments, Natalia found herself in the spotlight of pop culture, leading to her recent public statements.

In the GoFundMe campaign, Natalia shares her aspirations for the future, including plans to establish her own photography business. She expressed her desire to move forward as an adult and overcome the challenges in her life.      The medical procedures essential for her well-being come with a significant financial burden, estimated to exceed $500,000, and are not covered by insurance. Natalia's GoFundMe seeks to alleviate some of this financial strain. The campaign's summary states that achieving the initial goal will allow her to secure a deposit for her own place and initiate her photography business, providing a source of income to save for the costly treatments.

Since the launch of the fundraiser, Natalia has received 283 donations and 27 words of support. Messages from supporters have conveyed empathy and encouragement, acknowledging the hardships she has faced and expressing hope for her future.

  • Retired Texas Judge and Wife Found Dead, Son Arrested for Capital Murder
A tragic incident unfolded in a Texas home as a retired judge and his wife were found dead from shotgun blasts, leading to the arrest of their adult son, who has been charged with capital murder. The motive behind this shocking act is rooted in a refusal to take a sleeping aid.

The victims have been identified as former Williamson County Judge Alfred “Burt” Carnes and his wife, Susan Carnes, both 74 years old. Their son, Seth Carnes, 45, is now in custody, facing serious charges related to their deaths.

According to an arrest affidavit cited by Fox 7 Austin, Seth Carnes admitted to the shooting, stating that he was aware he had used a Remington 870 shotgun kept on the nightstand in his parents' converted garage, where he lived. The alleged motive behind this heinous act was Seth's refusal to take a sleeping pill, which led to a confrontation with his mother, Susan Carnes.

Reportedly, Seth Carnes believed that his mother was attempting to administer the sleeping pill forcibly, a situation he vehemently opposed. The affidavit quoted him as saying that there was no other reason for him to shoot his mother except for this dispute. When questioned about why he also shot his father, Seth allegedly responded, "I've just been looking for something and figured I would finish the job."

The tragic incident came to light shortly before midnight when Seth Carnes' daughter called 911, reporting that her grandfather had been shot. Deputies from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office swiftly arrived at the Carnes family's residence outside Georgetown, Texas. Seth Carnes voluntarily surrendered, walking out of the house while holding a coffee mug.

Inside the residence, officers discovered Alfred Carnes' lifeless body in the living room, alongside a shotgun and a spent shell in the kitchen area. Susan Carnes' body was found in her son's bedroom.

The preliminary investigation points to a disagreement within the family that escalated into violence, ultimately resulting in the tragic deaths of Alfred and Susan Carnes. The sheriff's office characterized the incident as a case of family violence leading to death.

Alfred Carnes, a retired judge, came from a family with a strong law enforcement background, including a Texas Ranger and a Border Patrol agent. He served 24 years on the bench and retired from the 368th District Court in 2013.

Susan Carnes, a retired elementary school teacher, was described as a "pillar of the community" by a family friend. The devastating incident has had a profound impact on the community, especially considering Alfred 'Burt' Carnes' esteemed position as a retired District Judge.

Commander John Foster of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office expressed sympathy for the affected friends and family, stating, "This deeply distressing incident has sent shockwaves through our community, particularly considering Alfred ‘Burt’ Carnes’ esteemed position as a retired District Judge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family affected by this heartbreaking event."

Seth Carnes is currently held in the Williamson County Jail without bond. In Texas, capital murder is a serious charge that carries the potential penalties of life in prison or the death penalty. As the investigation and legal proceedings continue, the community mourns the loss of two individuals who were deeply ingrained in the fabric of their community.
