Mark Kaufman's September 2026 statement adds a sharp contradiction to the Mica Miller case. The public record shows a best man, a shared business connection, and a pastor calling Kaufman his best friend from the pulpit. Kaufman says Death of the Pastor's Wife does not reflect the friend group he actually lived in. 

The archival footage is specific. Kaufman stood beside JP Miller at his 2017 wedding to Mica and joked about being forced into the friendship and best-man role. On April 28, 2024, the morning after Mica died, JP introduced Kaufman at Solid Rock Church as his best friend and handed the service over to him for a song. 

Kaufman's September statement says JP was never part of the core group of friends he regularly spent time with. He also denies seeing mistreatment of Mica and says he has severed his ties with JP and Solid Rock. Reporting on their business relationship says JP's minority stake in Crocodile Rocks was bought out in late 2025 and that he is no longer associated with the venue. 

Robin Dreeke brings the behavioral lens to the gap between those public moments and Kaufman's current account. He examines how loyalty works inside a high-control relationship and why communities can normalize behavior while they are living inside it. He also looks at why people sometimes redraw the borders of a relationship once cameras, investigators, and a national audience are looking at the same history. 

JP's May 5, 2024 memorial remarks are part of that record. He said he spent time beside Mica's body several times and claimed he tried to raise her from the dead. JP later pleaded not guilty to federal cyberstalking and false-statement charges tied to alleged conduct against Mica. He has not been charged in her death, and the federal case is scheduled for the October 2026 term.

Lindsay Clancy returns to court on September 29 with the defense trying to turn a mistrial into an ending. Kevin Reddington is not relying on a single theory. He is pursuing a Rule 25 required-finding argument while also preparing a separate double-jeopardy challenge to the mistrial itself. 

Rule 25 focuses on whether the Commonwealth's evidence was legally sufficient to support a conviction. The double-jeopardy argument focuses on a different question: whether Judge William Sullivan truly had to declare a mistrial after the jury deadlocked 11-1. 

That second fight reaches back into the jury room. Foreperson Roni Carlson has said the lone holdout admitted he had reasonable doubt, yet still refused to find Clancy not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility. Before the mistrial, the jury sent the court a note saying one member would not follow the reasonable-doubt instruction. Reddington asked Sullivan to remove that juror and the judge refused. 

Sullivan's own instructions now matter to the argument. He told jurors they must follow the law whether they agreed with it or not. In the deadlock charge, he also told each juror that any verdict had to remain the product of that juror's own convictions. The same charge said that if reasonable doubt remained on an essential element, Clancy had to receive the benefit of that doubt. 

Defense attorney Bob Motta joins Hidden Killers Live to separate the legal routes from the courtroom rhetoric. Prosecutors have not announced whether they will retry the case. Sullivan will have to confront the defense motions before anyone can know whether another trial is actually next.

The Donna Adelson trial forced the Adelson family’s private communications into open court, and Wendi Adelson’s testimony showed how far her mother wanted to push after losing the relocation fight with Dan Markel. Wendi testified that Donna suggested baptizing the boys as Christians, putting them in Hitler Youth uniforms, and trying a $1 million offer to persuade Markel to let them move to South Florida. 

That evidence sits beside testimony from Donna’s own children about how she operated inside the family. Wendi said Donna “micromanaged my life.” Robert Adelson testified that his mother was controlling, had fixed ideas about what she wanted for her children, and “ran the show.” He described Charlie as the sibling who needed more attention from Donna.
 
Charlie’s post-conviction phone records provide a measurable look at that bond. During the seven days after his 2023 conviction, he made 86 calls to the phone number linked to Donna. The calls totaled 2,118 minutes. Financial investigator Mary Hull testified that Donna also managed practical parts of Charlie’s life, including travel arrangements and bills.

The prosecution connected that family dependence to the murder case through witnesses and financial records. Katherine Magbanua testified that Charlie would leave conversations about the arrangement to call his mother. She also testified that Charlie told her Donna had washed damp cash. Magbanua received 44 checks from the family dental practice even though she testified she never worked there; trial evidence showed Donna had signing authority on the checks. The defense argued Donna followed Charlie’s directions and disputed the state’s theory of what those payments meant. 

Donna was convicted in 2025 and sentenced to life in prison. Her direct appeal is in briefing before Florida’s First District Court of Appeal, where the conviction and sentence face their next formal review.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to break down one of the most disturbing alleged themes in the JP Miller case: the use of protective language to justify controlling behavior. Prosecutors say Miller told federal agents that having Mica Miller monitored was about keeping her safe. Shavaun Scott explains why that framing matters, how alleged abusers can sell control as care and why the people around them often adopt the same vocabulary without questioning what it actually covers. 

Then the conversation turns to Solid Rock Church itself. Public reporting in late 2023 described a ministry with about 700 members, a major Highway 17 fundraising push and roughly $5.59 million in real-estate holdings and related assets. By November 2024, the church and school were shuttered, the main campus had been sold, and additional property had been transferred into another entity tied to JP. Former insiders have publicly said they did not receive full financial transparency about what the church owned or how decisions were being made. 

The federal case is narrower but serious. Miller was indicted in December 2025 on one count of cyberstalking and one count of making false statements. Prosecutors allege a pattern of harassment from November 2022 through April 2024 involving unwanted communication, financial interference, tire damage, an intimate image posted without consent and tracking devices placed on Mica’s vehicle. Miller has pleaded not guilty. He denies abuse and has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death. Trial is scheduled for the October 2026 federal term. 
Shavaun Scott keeps the combined episode grounded in behavior, not spectacle. Her focus is on how institutions normalize the controller’s narrative and how easily a community can confuse access, authority and vigilance with love. 

What remains is a church that shrank, assets that moved, a criminal case that is still pending and an explanation — protection — that only sounds comforting until you line it up against the conduct prosecutors actually describe.

Mica Miller’s first wedding already had JP Miller at the altar. He was not the groom. He was the pastor officiating her marriage to Jeremy Deas, years before Mica and JP would marry each other. 

Mica entered Solid Rock Church as a teenager and became part of its worship life. JP was older, established and in a position of spiritual authority. Over time, the connection expanded beyond church: Mica worked for JP’s family, and the two later became a couple. They married in November 2017. 

The history matters because federal prosecutors now describe an alleged pattern that ran from November 2022 until Mica’s death on April 27, 2024. JP was indicted in December 2025 on cyberstalking and false-statement charges. Prosecutors allege unwanted communications, interference with Mica’s finances and daily activities, tire damage, an intimate image posted without consent and tracking devices placed on her vehicle. JP has pleaded not guilty, denies wrongdoing and has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death. The federal case is set for the October 2026 term. 

Jennifer Coffindaffer examines the investigative side of that timeline: what changes when a person accused of surveillance already had years of access, authority and familiarity. Lindsay Clancy jury room accounts now include a trial exhibit, a water bottle, a reasonable-doubt admission, and a deadlock that ended a six-week murder trial without a verdict. Jurors who have spoken publicly say eleven members ultimately favored a finding of not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility and one member did not. 

Nick Dargie, the first male juror to speak publicly, told ABC News that he repeatedly asked the holdout to show the evidence behind his position. Dargie says the juror could not point to a witness or exhibit that answered him and at times scrolled on his phone while other jurors were talking. Then came the moment Dargie says left him stunned: the holdout took an exercise band from the evidence bag, put it around an empty water bottle, and pulled. 

Roni Carlson, the jury foreperson, says a separate exchange made her think the case was over. According to Carlson, the holdout said he had reasonable doubt. She began completing and signing the three verdict forms. Carlson says he then told the room he still would not vote for a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity verdict. 

Judge William Sullivan had already received jury notes reporting a deadlock and a complaint that one member was not applying the reasonable-doubt instruction. Sullivan questioned the jurors, reviewed the law, and directed them to continue. Massachusetts' Tuey-Rodriguez instruction also tells deadlocked jurors not to surrender an honest conviction merely to reach a unanimous result. The panel never got there.

The Mica Miller case is moving toward a federal trial, but one of the most troubling details comes from a conversation that happened before her death. A friend in Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife says Mica described a precise fear about JP Miller while sitting in her living room, long before a federal grand jury charged him with cyberstalking. 

Authorities ruled Mica’s April 27, 2024 death a suicide. The North Carolina medical examiner’s report documented that she was found in the river about 100 feet from shell casings and reported no sign of a physical struggle at the scene. JP Miller has not been charged in connection with her death. 

The pending federal case focuses on a different question: what prosecutors say JP did to Mica before she died. The indictment alleges unwanted and harassing communications beginning in November 2022, tracking devices on her vehicle, interference with her finances and daily activities, more than fifty contacts in a single day, and damage to her tires. A second count alleges false statements to federal investigators; JP has entered a not-guilty plea. 

A federal grand jury returned the two-count indictment in December 2025. Miller pleaded not guilty the following month and was released on a $100,000 bond with location monitoring while the case moved through repeated delays.

D4vd Celeste Rivas Hernandez civil lawsuit — the new legal fight asks whether people around David Anthony Burke were passive bystanders or active parts of the access and logistics described by Celeste's family. The complaint names Burke, his mother Colleen Burke, manager Josh Marshall, live-in security guard Sheldon Jacques, additional management and business entities, and brings 12 causes of action. 

One allegation gives the civil case its sharpest edge. The family says Jacques lived at Burke's Hollywood Hills residence during part of the relevant period and helped remove Celeste from her family home and bring her to Burke. The complaint also alleges people and companies in Burke's orbit knew or should have known Celeste was a minor and failed to intervene. 

The financial structure is part of the same civil theory. Colleen Burke is accused of managing major parts of her son's money and approving business expenses. A former financial manager testified at Burke's preliminary hearing that the singer generated roughly $10 million to $11.5 million in gross earnings from 2023 through 2025. Property records reported after Celeste's remains were found showed two Texas homes transferred into his mother's name. 
On the criminal side, Burke has pleaded not guilty. He was ordered to stand trial following a July preliminary hearing and remains in custody without bail. His private defense team later withdrew, the public defender's office took over, and the next status conference is set for October 19, 2026.

Evidence proves facts. But federal prosecutors need something more from this jury — they need twelve people to feel the accumulated weight of what Mica Miller allegedly lived with for nearly two years. GPS tracking data on a spreadsheet doesn't do that. Fifty contacts in one day logged on a phone record doesn't do that.
