Morning Mantra: "Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you."
Anxiety and tension are no fun. They put a damper on everything from how you think, to how you feel. Many of us struggle with it so much we feel like we are in a constant state of "fight or flight" mode.
We have an anxious thoughts because our brain is always trying to keep us alive. To the brain, survival is much more important than happiness. So, the brain conjures up worst case scenarios, and "what ifs" so that we can be prepared for anything. The trouble is, the brain regularly gets it wrong.
So, it's up to you to let the brain know when it can relax. When you feel overwhelmed, or when anxiety swoops in and makes your nervous system feel like it's on high alert, here's a two minute, incredibly effective reset.
First things first, feel your feet firmly on the floor or grass – really press down and feel that solid, grounding foundation beneath you.
Then, take three slow, deliberate breaths in through your nose, and then let out a big, audible sigh through your mouth.
After that, gently unclench your jaw, allowing it to softly drop, and slowly roll your shoulders back and around, really feeling the movement as you release any tension.
Finally, gently shake out your hands, your arms – heck, why not your whole body? Think like a dog or horse shaking off water– you're literally shaking off all that doesn't belong to you.
Now check in with your body-how do you feel? Chances are, you’ve shifted from that 'fight or flight' mode into a calmer space. If not, no worries at all – just repeat these steps as many times as you need.
