Game Wardens and Houndsmen have always had a special relationship. Albeit, adversarial, it is a relationship that is steeped in  mystery, misunderstanding and at times; outright hatred. It is a relationship that also comes with a long history and tradition. For way too long it has been widely accepted that the Houndsman’s job is to outsmart the game warden and the game warden feels it his job to outsmart the Houndsman. An ignorant game that needs to be resolved.

Seth goes to work in this episode to pry some of those tales from Chris. Being a Houndsman and a game warden Chris lays out some entertaining stories about his professional encounters with hunters and also talks about his frustrations in dealing with an ignorant bureaucratic machine known as government.

This episode is filled with tones of laughs but also touches on the serious topic of how houndsmen can gain ground and earn respect from other hunters and policy makers. Chris also challenges game wardens to do better. No one is innocent and there is plenty of ignorance on both sides of the issue.

From racing dirt bikes to handling dogs for the biggest names in competition coonhunting, Duell Murphy has strived to be a professional at everything he has been involved in. Host, Bruce Matthews, corners Duell for this in depth interview. Duell will discuss growing up in the coonhunting capital of the world, Indiana and how he developed a passion for hunting Treeing Walker Coonhounds at the highest levels of competition.  

Making his way to the top has not always been easy for Duell. It has taken many long nights, setbacks, and perseverance to reach the highest levels in competition coonhunting.  We will talk about his triumphs in the sport of competition coonhunting including winning two trucks and an AKC World Championship. The old man down the road that has been hunting for fifty years may be a able to help, providing he hasn’t been doing it wrong for fifty years. After their last conversation, Heath follows up with Clinton Cillers from South Africa. They had barely scratched the surface on dog behavior and training a trailing dog. After the dry season a rain shower makes trailing seem easy. Heath and Clinton talk about how the different weather elements and the climate changes everything from the style and speed at which the dogs move to how they react when they make lose. The discussion gets very technical on behavior during a proximity alert and how air blown scent is stronger than ground scent. They give examples of what this means to all types of training. Clinton and Heath believe that self discovery is the ultimate teacher of any training. The two finish up the hour with scent pools and what it means, how the dogs struggle to work through them and what you may be witnessing without knowing what is actually taking place. There has never been a bigger impact for Houndsmen than the WOLF. Houndsmen have had their futures and breeding programs altered, changed the way they hunt, changed areas they hunt, even moved their families to new areas of the country hundreds of miles away all because of the wolf. 

The Foundation For Wildlife Management (f4wm) is a group that is taking on the weaponized, politicized and mischaracterized issue of the invasion and impact of the Canadian Grey Wolf in the Northern Rocky Mountain Region. Justin Webb is the CEO for the f4wm. Justin saw the impact the wolf was making on native wildlife populations, how it was affecting recreation opportunities and destroying hunting opportunities in areas that were once teeming with wildlife. He was not willing accept that. He recognized that the wolf is a project that is weaponized by the anti hunting community, a political hot potato and was being forced down the throat of every hunter. His efforts have created an organization that has taken the issue straight on. The f4wm has worked with many sporting organizations and wildlife managers to put aggressive management plans in place that has reduced wolf numbers by over 1600 wolves and paid out over $1 million in reimbursement to hunters and trappers taking wolves.

Clinton Cillers is playing a deadly game. He is tracking armed poachers in Africa with hounds.

Heath is able to connect with Clinton Cillers from South Africa. Clinton runs Tactical K9 Africa. He offers an array of K9 training to include Patrol/guard dog, bloodspoor, wildlife protection and man trailing. Clinton is now contracted to track down wildlife poachers in and around the area he lives. With 12 years running the Tactical K9 training facilities, Clinton has transitioned from the common police K9, Mali and Shepard to hounds. After some issues with the Bloodhounds, he now runs a bluetick cross that originated in the US. Clinton talks about how, and why he now runs this style of hound.
