In this episode Steve is live at Lone Pine Treeing Walker Kennels in Kittanning, Pennsylvania with owner Randy Smith.  The episode takes place midway through a seven-day and night hound-hunting adventure that has become an annual affair for Fielder and Smith.

The friends discuss the previous three nights of coon hunting and the accompanying afternoons running Smith’s beagles on Pennsylvania cottontails.  True to Smith’s preferences in coonhounds, each of Smith’s rabbit runners is a female.

The episode runs the gamut of subjects from play by plays of the week’s hunts, current hounds in the Lone Pine stable, recent and planned breedings and plans for the future in competition.  

Smith is always a good listen as he cordially reveals the inner comings and goings of the nation’s most successful breeding kennel in the coonhound sport.  This is hound talk at its finest.  Enjoy,

In this episode Mark Zepp joins Steve in remembering hunter, breeder, trainer, author, innovator and entrepreneur John Wick of Montgomery City, Missouri.

“He was Elvis,” Zepp opines in this up-close look at perhaps the most influential man to ever snap a leash on a hound. Through his endless ads and columns in coon hunting magazines, Wick single handedly tackled the task of educating the coonhound masses on the nuances of the sport that one major dog food company called the largest sporting dog activity in America. 

Zepp worked, traveled and hunted alongside John Wick for ten years at Wick Outdoor Works which at the time was the leading supply company for coon hunters nationwide.  Nobody in the coon hunting game knew Wick better nor was more closely associated with the most recognizable name in the coonhound sport than Zepp.

This episode explores the many aspects of this amazing man’s life from the viewpoint of one that knew him best.  Listeners will appreciate this inside look at a very special man indeed.

The Gone To The Dogs Podcast introduces its Legend Series of recordings with the nation’s best known and most revered raccoon hunters occupying the guest spot.

This week the podcast features one of the sports most respected and longest running breeders of Treeing Walker Coonhounds, as Steve brings the renown Jim “Wildman” Meeks to the Gone To The Dogs microphone.   Meeks, a first ballot inductee into the North Carolina State Coon Hunters Hall of Fame, is possessed of a wealth of knowledge in all areas of the coon hunting game. 

Steve and Jim, besides being contemporaries in age, have been friends for many years.  A visit with Jim Meeks is like experiencing a real, live family reunion each time the pair gets together.

In this episode Steve talks with North Carolina’s Mark Miller.Mark is a veteran raccoon hunter that has long been devoted to the Treeing Walker breed.  Mark’s Walker hound Dreamer was voted into the Southeastern Treeing Walker Association’s Hall of Fame as a coonhound. 

Through Miller’s association with North Carolina State Trooper Brad Hyatt who runs Plott dogs on bears, he became interested in Plotts, North Carolina’s official state dog. 

How does a houndsman devoted to a given breed, especially on that has been particularly successful with that breed, make the decision to try another breed, moving from the most popular among United Kennel Club’s seven coonhound breeds to a breed that has the fewest dogs in the registry?   This episode tells the story in detail including a discussion on the differences in the two breeds and why Miller was persuaded to switch.   Enjoy dog talk at its finest in this interesting conversation.
