In this episode Steve and Nubbin talk about Christmas, past and present. It’s a fun walk down memory lane for a couple of guys that have witnessed more than 160 Christmases in their combined earthy journey.
The pair spins several tales of Christmases past in Alabama and West Virginia that will amuse and entertain. Nubbin’s wife Becky is still quite the entertainer with plans for more than thirty adults and their kids to invade the Sterrett, Ala., homestead at her gathering this year. Steve and Ella take a more subtle approach to what is a favorite time of year, choosing a small, family-oriented holiday celebration.
The second part of the episode features guest Danny Jones of Rockwell, North Carolina. Danny is promoting a new coon hunt in an old familiar location. The Carolina Classic on January 23 – 24, will be held in Salisbury, North Carolina at the familiar Rowan County Fairgrounds where Southeastern Treeing Walker Days was held for many years. Danny heads the Trapp Hill Coon Hunters Association that will host the event. All details of the homecoming event are discussed.
From each of us at the Gone To The Dogs Podcast, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

In this the first of two Christmas episodes Steve sets the mood for his favorite holiday by sharing an essay titled Christmas Cookies from the book Gone To The Dogs – A Coon Hunter’s Journey. The idea hinges upon how to show appreciation to those that make hound hunting possible for us throughout the year.
Things take on a more serious note as Steve discusses the changes hound people are seeing in institutions upon which they regularly depend and ponders the what-ifs should things change too much. A must listen.

This week Steve entertains a trio of coon hunters from Ohio that have become some of the most recognizable and respected hunters in game as breeders, trainers and successful competitors. The Dunlap brothers, Chuck and Don, were born in the adjoining county of Fayette in West Virginia, next door to Raleigh County where Steve was born. Their family migrated to central Ohio where the Dunlaps established themselves as young me to be serious coon hunters. Chuck’s son Coleton, affectionately known as Coonman, has followed in his dad’s and his uncle’s footsteps, earning a respected name for himself as well. Chuck formed his reputation as a successful handler in the early days of his career, the mid 1980s, by handling a famous English stud dog named GRNITECH Baron’s Blue Reb, known far and wide as Lumis. Lumis, a crossbred Treeing Walker hound by today’s standards, was registered as English. He was owned by Carl Carroll of Crestline, Ohio and Roger W. Daron of Plymouth, Ohio, and handled by Chuck Dunlap. The conversation moves from Lumis to the Buck Creek Treeing Walker hounds for which the Dunlaps are well-known today. Hounds like two-time AKC World Champion Buck Creek Mr. Smith, Buck Creek Crowson and Buck Creek Homer, as well as others, fill the episode. This is a story of one family’s love for coon hunting and for each other. It is well worth your time.

Have you ever wondered how your dog found you in a crowd of people and dogs. It’s easy, scent discrimination. But it’s a little deeper than that. Listen to this episode as we touch on scent and the power of the dog's nose. Their odor intelligence.

In this episode Steve is joined by longtime friend David McKee. The conversation begins with a recap of McKee’s recent heart surgery from which he is recovering nicely.
The friends talk about the upcoming Grand American Coon Hunt which McKee manages as President of the Grand American Coon Hunter’s Association. Other hats worn by McKee include President of the South Carolina Coon Hunters Association and AKC Field Representative. McKee discussed the addition of online entries for the prestigious Grand American event that dates back to 1965.
McKee and Steve served the American Kennel Club together when Fielder was there. The pals enjoy reminiscing about the achievements their team consisting of Jerry Moll, Jimmy Phillips, Lyndell Price, Caroline Murphy and McKee accomplished, including many innovations that are in practice with other registries today.
The episode is with AKC facts, some on the road shenanigans and a lot of mutual respect for the hours spent. It's a prime example of dog talk at its finest.

What makes a hound truly perform? Beyond drive and training lies the blueprint of the body itself. Let’s talk about why conformation is the foundation of every successful working dog. Heath talks with Jason Hunter about why it is so important in performance dogs. It’s the hidden engine that powers every great hound.
