Hound Dog Podcast Network by The Sportsmen's Empire

In this episode Steve takes an inside look at the hound sports by exploring the things that radiate from within the soul of the hunter, from the emotional side.  Houndsmen may display a plethora of emotions, the usual suspects being jealousy, envy, greed along with often being overly competitive.

But there’s a soft underbelly to the sport that macho men may be reluctant to admit, much less talk about.  Steve delves into feelings of pride, self-centeredness, disappointment, exhilaration, and even disgust that often comprise the houndsmen’s personality, making it difficult to form and maintain meaningful relationships with other members of the sport.

Feelings of love and adoration for hounds as well as grief when a good hound is lost come under Steve’s emotional microscope in this introspective episode.

In this episode Steve laments the loss of an old friend, a monthly visitor to which he contributed a fairly large portion of his working career, a friend whose blank pages Steve turned, each month, into essays, exposes and bites of entertainment for thousands of hound-hungry subscribers over a nearly fifty-year history.  UKC announced recently that it will no longer publish their house organ Coonhound Bloodlines after the first of the year.

The episode also contains a White River Refuge 2025 preview, a letter from old friend Bubba Back Home, a report on Ghost the wonder dog and a congratulatory message to the brand new UKC World Champions.  The episode concludes with a tutorial on coon skinning for those wishing to take a Foxfire-type approach to coon hunting the way Deddy did it.

Too often we put too much focus on the end result of catching  game. But the process itself is just as valuable, sometimes even more so. If the process is done correctly the end result is just the icing on the cake. If done properly it makes the end result much more gratifying. The journey is built on the bond forged during this time. How strong is yours?

In this episode Steve flies solo to recap a recent three-day trip to Indiana to pick up a  new puppy. While in Richmond, scene of his recent trip to Autumn Oaks, our host takes a trip out to the Wayne County Coon Hunter’s Association club house, a massive structure for its type, to visit with the club that has hosted thirty-three of the Events Where History Is Made since Steve brought the UKC event to Richmond in 1992.

Pup training advice constitutes the remainder of the episode laced with vignettes from prior UKC World Championships, an event that concluded its 47th year with the competition of this year’s finals just two days prior to the airing of this podcast.  Hound people struggling with training a young hound will appreciate Steve’s experiences gained in more than 70 years with hounds.

In this episode, admittedly one of the hardest to produce in his 320-plus podcast career, Steve begins with a musical tribute to recently assassinated Christion activist Charlie Kirk. The song written and performed by Oklahoma singer/songwriter Tennessee Jet (aka T.J. McFarland), was penned shortly after Kirk was shot while debating students on a Utah college campus. The impact of the Kirk slaying sent shockwaves across the nation and impacted our host and his guests, Nubbin Moore and Randy Fielder as well as millions across the Nation. After the tribute, the episode moves on to the podcast’s benchmark “Dog talk at its finest” as the boys discuss favorite hounds of the past, Nubbin’s recent family fishing and hunting trip to south Alabama and a look-back at the recent Autumn Oaks event in Indiana. With scarcely two months to go until their annual trip to the White River National Wildlife Refuge, the conversation naturally drifts out to the big Delta bottoms of Arkansas. This one is dedicated to the memory of patriot Charlie Kirk. May he rest in peace.

Steve is joined by his brother Randy as they entertain fellow West Virginian Nathan Johnson as this week’s guest.

Johnson, from the town of Rock View in Wyoming County, has never hunted in any other place than southern West Virginia where he, as were the Fielder brothers, was born and raised.  The conversation centers upon what it’s like to hunt in the rugged environs of coal-mining country and why, in fact, would anyone want to hunt in an area that has been named one of the worst states in the Union for coon hunting?

The boys agree that it takes a certain hunting style for a coonhound to be successful in the rugged terrain and provide the listener a detailed description of hunting there.  As the month of October approaches, the discussion moves to raccoon season, the abundance or lack thereof of raccoons in the area, preferred hunting methods, and their individual positions on taking game in areas where the species is not always in good supply.

This is West Virginia dog talk at its finest with one of the finest hunters to have occupied our guest’s chair for an interview.  Sit back and enjoy this trio of mountain boys having a good time talking dogs.  You’ll especially enjoy Johnson’s one-liners as the conversation stays on the lighter side.

In this episode, we break down one of the most debated topics in the hound hunting world: packing hounds vs. hunting a pack. Do we understand the distinction between these two approaches and how it can drastically change the way you train, hunt, and manage your dogs in the field. We can use both methods and be successful. Join us on What’s up Wednesday for the best hound podcast there is to offer.
