I have been training dogs to work cattle for most of my life. Growing up on a cow/calf operation, good dogs were essential.

While a round pen is nice, it's not necessary. Using sheep or calves initially can help lay a foundation for your dog.

To sort cattle from a large herd, your dog needs to learn to “shed.” This requires patience, as dogs may initially feel out of control.

1. Start with Calves: Place calves between you and your dog.

Dogs should be more aggressive with rougher cattle and gentler with quieter ones. If your dog is reluctant to work, you may be correcting too harshly.

Both dogs and livestock have a “bubble.” Encourage your dog to find it for easier movement of cows and calves.

Train your dog before taking them to work to reduce mishaps and make tasks easier.

By following these steps, you can effectively train your dog to work cattle.
