On today’s show we interview Carol-Ann Nelson, founder of Destination Rehab (501c3) in 2016 to address the isolation and lack of outdoor recreation for adults with neurologic conditions. Carol-Ann talks about the gap that she saw for patients after they finished rehab and found themselves rarely leaving their houses. She was passionate about helping people experience the things they used to love in their lives that they’ve lost. She discusses the reasons she decided to create a nonprofit business, the programs, referrals, and funding. She also explains how, even though they work outdoors, they haven’t had any trouble getting Medicare to cover therapy. She is clear and transparent about both the positives and challenges of doing outdoor therapy.

Group classes are different since COVID. We’re excited people are able to start returning to in person groups but creative ideas are needed to do circuit classes to keep everyone safe. We’re also noticing the levels people are at after a year of exercising virtually on Zoom, which is interesting. Claire shares practical and creative ideas for you to implement in your next group class for people with Parkinson’s! She shares how she helps keep participant heart rates up during classes by reducing the cognitive demand. Anti-racist action: New term alert! Many of us are familiar with the term “microaggression,” however, this term has been updated to now be called “subtle act of exclusion” or SAE. One of the books on our Building Allyship reading list is called Subtle Acts of Exclusion by Tiffany Jana and Michael Baran. I’ll explain why the switch and my own lessons learned.
Why are we doing this? What’s it all for? Do we look like we are doing EVERYTHING? Why does NeuroCollaborative exist and how do we know when we are successful?
In today’s episode we talk about our mission and vision, what we are against in healthcare culture, and what we value. We also discuss the purpose of what we’ve created in NeuroCollaborative, like our free Facebook group and what it is for as well as what it is NOT for. We open up about all of it!
Anti-racist action: we hired a DEI business consultant that we will be working with very soon! Plus we continue to read the books and meet in a small group with others on this path that we can talk openly to. Creating a trusted group is highly recommended!

Today we continue our nonprofit highlights with Rebecca Bliss and Susan Saenger. We will learn more about their unique nonprofit business model and set up. They offer free PD exercise classes in Durham, NC through the Parkinson’s Movement Initiative, which operates under the American Dance Festival. With this setup they are able to provide free classes to their community, which has been really effective for their mission of improving access to care. It is a collaborative model where the parent organization greatly helps with outreach and other administrative challenges that smaller groups face. Our guests discuss their time commitment as they both work full time outside of the program. They operate under grant funding and talk about the outcomes used for funding, as well as how a therapist interested in working in the community like this could get started.
