  • 48: What You Should Know About Starting a Neuro Wellness Program Part 1

In today’s show we discuss why neuro wellness is a critical component of your client’s health journey and how to really differentiate it from therapy.  We discuss the most confusing components of wellness vs therapy to help bring you some clarity on the topic so you can move forward with providing wellness with confidence.

Anti-racist Action: The Black Rehabilitation Manifesto is a document we became aware of recently. We invite you to read it and see if it is something you can stand behind with us. http://www.ujimainstitute.com/black-rehabilitation-manifesto.html

  • 46: Freezing of Gait Resources You’ll Love

Today we go into more detail about Freezing of Gait (FOG) in Parkinson’s. We discuss what a therapist should know about medication dosage with clients, the key components of exercises specific for FOG, why it matters if your client has typical PD or atypical PD, and more.  Claire shares supplemental materials for helping you characterize FOG as well as other key tips for therapists and providers to know!

The article discussed today (which has supplemental material cited): Evidence for subtypes of freezing of gait by Kaylena A. Ehgoetz Martens, PhD, et al.  Movement Disorders Aug 2018

Anti-racist action: We hired a DEI coach to help us! We’ve taken the next big step and hired an expert to coach us. It will be both personal and professional training. We have to work on our own biases and unlearning racist ideas that we didn’t even know about so we can build businesses that are anti-racist.

In NeuroSpark, stay tuned to FOG part 2 webinar on treatment and come to office hours with your questions! For others in the community, stay tuned for a free open webinar on March 30th.  Link to register will be coming soon.

  • 45: What If You Had Neuro Office Hours?

What if you had a place to ask your toughest questions to mentors from around the globe? What if you had access to experts at your fingertips when you felt stuck with a patient case?

Knowledge translation requires a person to reflect, talk through their thought process, be asked questions, review resources and ideas from others.  Today we discuss a great way this occurs when we come together and put our ideas into action.

Anti-racist action: Learn about how to let go of being a good person so you can improve and grow.  What if your attachment to being a "good" person is holding you back from actually becoming a better person?

  • 44: The Unrelenting Misperceptions of Spasticity and Hypertonicity - What You Need To Know

In today’s episode we discuss a topic from our NeuroSpark Membership that is highly misunderstood - Spasticity! We delve into resources that JJ shared including an article by Dr. Beth Fisher and colleagues (it shares the title of this episode) and we discuss the key points as well as our interpretations of the highlights.  What are your perceptions of how spasticity and hypertonicity affect your patients’ and clients’ movement? Does spasticity cause your patient’s movement dysfunction? Are you using the terms properly?? Listen to the episode to find clarity.  Learn what you need to know and what you need to stop doing.

Anti-racist action/update: we’ve recorded several podcasts now and it is Black History Month so it would be awesome if you would check them out.  Episodes 42 and 43.  Also, we are looking forward to reading a new book entitled “Subtle Acts of Exclusion” by Tiffany Jana and Michael Baran. This will be a great education resource in understanding microaggressions.  Check it out if you want!

  • 43: How To Recover From ‘Good White Person Syndrome’ Even If You Don’t Think You Have It

Trigger warning for this episode: this conversation is open, honest and frank about race and racism as we navigate an anti-racism journey. We are chatting today with Liz Weamer, another neuro PT who we met in our anti-racism membership, Building Allyship. In the show we talk about how you can't change your business until you work on yourself personally and your underlying beliefs.  Liz shares her story of where she started (aka having "Good White Person Syndrome" / I don't really think I'm racist) vs where she is after 7 months of doing anti-racist work (Wow, I see it now. I am literally dripping with racism). She defines Good White Person Syndrome, how you know if you have it and what to do about it.

We discuss the books that have made the most impact on this work for us personally and some key takeaways as well as the parallels to neuro PT and racism work.

Anti-racist action: If we said anything that requires calling out please let us know! We are learning, we suck at this. Call us out. Perfectionism is the enemy. Mistakes will happen.

We also learn more about her background as a business owner of her own pediatric practice as well as BA, which she started in 2020.  Dr. JPop shares her vision for BA and what a person can expect to gain from becoming an ally, which is so powerful.

  • 40: Why You Should Consider Grants to Try Something New and Expand Your Programs

Claire’s got the Parkinson’s Foundation community grant on her mind with the latest application cycle coming up.  In the episode we discuss how grants can be helpful and why you may want to consider them. We discuss our experience with applying for grants and how we’ve used them even in for-profit businesses.

We also discuss nonprofit businesses and if it would be something for you.  We’ll talk about this and have an opportunity for you to learn more this year!  We were able to donate to several nonprofits this year that are run by our members and are grateful to be able to do that.

Anti-racist action: In our efforts to create a DEI plan we reached out inside our Building Allyship membership group and found someone who is on the DEI committee at her work looking to incorporate more of this at her location.  We’d love to have a brainstorm group from others of you out there who want to improve your DEI efforts at work too! Let us know if that’s something you’d be interested in.

  • 39: The Best Way to Incorporate What You’ve Learned into Practice So Your Patients and Clients Reach Their Goals

We love to learn! We know you do too.  We’re running through the exciting topics you can expect to learn this year in NeuroSpark as well as what’s needed to ensure you translate what you learn into practice.

In the show we’ll discuss the topics we’re most excited about, how we’re incorporating the principles of knowledge translation into our program, and what that looks like. Is your continuing education meeting the principles of knowledge translation?  We’ll also talk about what’s to come in the business mentorship program that is merging into NeuroSpark.

Is your continuing education meeting the principles of knowledge translation?  Bite sized amounts of information, reflection, opportunity to implement, feedback

Anti-racist: Welcome to 2021! As a company we felt it was really important to design an anti-racist plan into our business for this year.  We’ve been learning and growing ourselves and using the podcast as a method for accountability, but we wanted to also create an actual plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion this year.  So that’s what we’re committing to here!
