iGaming Daily continues its Road to Lisbon series, a collection of podcasts featuring industry leaders who will help shape the upcoming SBC Summit in Lisbon.
In today’s episode, SBC's Media Manager, Fernando Noodt, is joined by Bernardo Oliveira Neves, Secretary General of the Portuguese Online Betting and Gambling Association (APAJO). Together, they examine Portugal's market performance, noting a recent slowdown in growth despite previously record-breaking figures.
The discussion focuses on the illegal market, identified as the biggest threat to Portuguese businesses, consumers, and the state. Studies show that over 40% of Portuguese consumers gamble on unlicensed betting platforms.
Although Portugal’s taxation model is progressive, a complete overhaul could risk doing more harm than good. Bernardo argues that Portugal could become a “flag bearer” for the industry in Europe if the right balance is struck among all stakeholders.
Bernardo will also be moderating the “Portugal: Smooth Sailing or Danger Ahead?” panel at this year’s SBC Summit in Lisbon, where he will explore the country’s iCasino growth, the contraction of sports betting, and broader market dynamics , including the ongoing challenge of unsafe gambling.
Could there be a backlash looming on the horizon for Portuguese operators??
