Long Story Short with Dr. Been
Episode 10: Chronic Inflammation - Pathogen Elimination and Important Inflammatory Cytokines (Lecture 2)
In this talk we will discuss how the inflammatory process is executed to contain microbes, repair tissue damage and to remove microbes, damaged tissue cells, worn out cells and irritants.
• Sentinel cells (mast cells, macrophages, neutrophils) and how these cells sense and ingest the microbes, damaged cells, or irritants and then destroy them
• Important cytokines and chemokines, especially TNF, IL-1 and IL-6
• The process of respiratory burst or reactive oxygen species production in neutrophils
• Reactive nitric oxide species in macrophages
The point of the above topics is to bring to light the mechanisms which, when dysregulated, play at the core of chronic inflammation. We will then discuss how various therapies target and modulate these mechanisms.
