Guest to the podcast Slhalhyiót (Helena Paul) shares the experiences that led to her developing BPD (childhood trauma, sexual assault, colonization, loss of traditional language, and many other factors). As an Indigenous woman she knows all too well the impacts of colonization, assimilation and genocide and the intergenerational traumas that have led to many mental health challenges that many people develop just to survive.
Her healing journey is ongoing, especially as she was just diagnosed with BPD a few years ago. She has found that connection to her Indigenous culture, the land of her ancestors, and learning the traditional language of her people have been key to recovery and survival.
If you are looking for a better description of dissociation than Laurie and Sara can provide we recommend listening to this episode as it is a symptom that Helena experiences regularly.
Helena believes that being properly diagnosed with BPD is a “gift” and that she can now embrace the insanity and life her authentic life.
Trigger Warning: Child Abuse, Sexual Assault
