Right before morning rush hour in midtown Manhattan on December 4th, 2024, UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed while on his way into an investors meeting. According to police, the suspected gunman was, “lying in wait for several minutes,” and then fled the scene following the attack. A nationwide manhunt ensued, and days later, Luigi Mangione was arrested at a Pennsylvania McDonald's and charged with Thompon’s killing. Since he was accused of gunning down the healthcare CEO in broad daylight, Mangione has become a surprising cultural phenomenon. While most find the crimes Mangione has been accused of horrific, he has been branded as a modern-day Robin Hood by some who see the shooting as a stand against a corrupt and broken health care system. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him. John H. Richardson, author of ‘Luigi: The Making and the Meaning,’ joins “Forbes True Crime” to discuss.
