James and Judie Farris learned this lesson in the most horrific way possible. Jimmy Farris Jr. was supposed to end up a soldier, a firefighter, or a cop like his dad. Instead, on the evening of May 22, 1995, he was pronounced dead at the age of 16, the victim of two stab wounds suffered during a 10-second brawl over marijuana. Jimmy Farris’ tragic death astonished the small California community where he lived, shattering its veneer of safety and innocence. But what happened next, many would argue, was far more shocking.
