Kerry Mead: It wasn’t depression, it was ADHD

Listen Later

Episode 21 with Kerry Mead.

"It's almost like you attract other neurodiverse people to you when you are neurodiverse."

Kerry is a music obsessive, book obsessive social butterfly and escaper of responsibilities. Kerry is a full-time single parent and registered carer to her oldest child who is autistic. When she isn’t busy with all of that Kerry is a writer and music editor. She writes about parenting and neurodiversity, politics, relationships, and all the other stuff too.

I reached out to Kerry after stumbling upon a really powerful essay she wrote for The Everyday magazine in the UK. The article was entitled “I Don’t Have Depression, I Have Attention Deficit Disorder: The Frequent Misdiagnosis of Womxn

I was really struck by the piece, I so related to her experience, especially as a woman who was misdiagnosed with chronic depression and anxiety for more than 20 years prior to my own ADHD diagnosis.

We talk about being mothers and the struggles we’ve faced with domestic duties and guilt and feelings of being a failure. Kerry has a son with autism and a daughter with ADHD, and we talk about how easy it is for mothers to put the work in when it comes to our kids, but not necessarily for ourselves.

Kerry is also from the UK and we talk a bit about the National Health Service (NHS) and some of the current hurdles to getting a diagnosis right now, the wait list can be years for some people.
