Hollywood foretold this... and now it's happening: AI is getting a little too smart for its own good. Several artificial intelligence models have broken out of their cages -- their protections -- and their creators are scrambling to keep things in check. Director of the Emerging Tech Policy Lab at Utah Valley University Brandon Amacher joins to explain how this is happening. Greg and Holly also discuss reports that Congress is using AI chatbots in a concerning way without any oversight.
It's been almost one year since Charlie Kirk was murdered on the campus of Utah Valley University. Now, we're learning that hundreds of people who were there -- who witnessed the shooting -- have applied for victim benefits. At the same time, we're learning about some controversy surrounding the way UVU plans to honor Charlie Kirk on the anniversary of his death. For this segment, Inside Sources digs into both stories.
Sometimes, it's the people you least expect who do big things. This is one of those times in Holly's mind. Hugh Hefner -- the man behind Playboy -- is now reported to have gone to the FBI about Jeffrey Epstein more than 20 years ago. Despite his complaints about things Epstein was doing, the FBI didn't open up official investigations into Hefner's complaints for nearly 15 years. NewsNation first reported the story this morning, which says that Hefner told the FBI of abuse and trafficking done by Epstein multiple times.
This morning, accused UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges. Mangione admitted to killing Brian Thompson, but only pled guilty to the charges of stalking. The sentencing for that could be up to life in prison -- a pretty serious punishment for a crime like stalking. KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas breaks down the charge and why it could amount to such a harsh sentencing.
This week marks one year since a devastating fire destroyed five businesses along Salt Lake City's Main Street. Business owners have been wondering what came next, both for their businesses and for their employees. Two of the five businesses have reopened thus far, and plans are in place for more to open soon. But the charred remains on this stretch of Main Street remain, showing just how bad the devastation was. Greg and Holly get an update on how reconstruction is going and how the resilient spirit of those businesses carries on.
Bucket after bucket after bucket -- quite the scene in Sandy as several dozen homes flooded thanks to last night's storm. Neighbor helping neighbor... just like Utahns do. Today, the rain's cleared up, but the damage remains. Flooding in Sandy, evacuations at the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater, and a tornado warning in Tooele County -- the storm came through with quite a punch! As the sun comes up this morning, we get an update on the damage from the storm with Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski.
Lefty. Southpaw. Ink dragger. Port-handed. All of those are terms to describe special people like host Greg Skordas and board operator Corey Miller... the left-handers of our Inside Sources team! And today's their day -- it's International Lefthanders Day. We finish the show chatting about all the unique qualities of our left-handed friends.
This morning, a new housing facility opened in St. George. Switchpoint Red Hills will help lots of people who are currently experiencing homelessness, with a specific focus on helping seniors and veterans who find themselves without stable housing. In this segment, we want to have a conversation about senior homelessness here in Utah and just how big of an issue it is. Switchpoint CEO Carol Hollowell joins Greg and Holly to chat about the new 110-unit facility and the broader issue of homelessness.
There are new developments in the case of a West Valley City mall stabbing, in which a Muslim kiosk worker was seriously injured. The man accused of the stabbing has said he targeted the man specifically because of his religion and ethnicity. Now, the federal government will pursue hate crime charges against the suspect. The Inside Sources hosts are confused, though, because this seems to contradict much of what the current Department of Justice does.
