A tour which began from a desire to offer solace and inspiration to communities under attach became, also, an inspiration to those who participated and to people across the country. Capturing the imagination of many communities, the Lavender Pen tour attracted a full concert of people dedicated to capturing the tour for history. Most important, a film was envisioned to tell the stories of the tour as it travelled the southern U.S. As bridges were built between the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, everyone traveling with them ultimately felt themselves pulled into the embrace. How does a filmmaker like David Charles, tasked with telling the story yet drawn into the story himself, decide what should be included? And how does his own life experience affect his view? What happens when the director becomes part of the action?
