Hulle was steeds tegnies getroud toe hy verkies is as president van Suid-Afrika in 1994, hoewel hulle reeds twee jaar tevore uitmekaar is.
Hul egskeiding is afgehandel in 1996.
----Formal English----
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is a civil rights activist and South African politician who has worked with the African National Congress Women's League and the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress.
She was also married to Nelson Mandela for thirty-eight years, of which for twenty-seven of them, he was incarcerated.
They were still technically married when he was elected president of South Africa in 1994, although they had separated two years before.
Their divorce was finalized in 1996.
Madikizela-Mandela is a contentious activist whose supporters remain loyal and call her the "Mother of the Nation." However, others have reviled her since the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission said in its report that she had played a personal role in the abduction, assault, torture, and murder of many men, women and children.
The commission also said it had ascertained that she had been indirectly responsible for countless others.
However, later she was acquitted of all the charges except for the kidnapping charges and was sentenced to six years in jail.
That sentence was later reduced to a fine.
She herself was also afflicted and subjected to persecution, torture, house arrest, and surveillance due to her political undertakings.
She also spent more than a year in solitary confinement and was banished and confined to the small town of Brandfort.
She was allowed to see her husband sometimes while he was imprisoned on Robben Island.
It was during her solitary confinement at Pretoria Central Prison that she came into the spotlight in 1969.
She actively campaigned for equality and as set forth by the African National Congress as a symbol of the fight against apartheid.
