Did you know the energy available to you shifts with the seasons? It was news to me, but after this conversation it made so much sense and inspired me to really take a look at the schedules I keep throughout the year.
Today’s guest is Ashley Burnett, women’s business & leadership coach, author, and the seasonally-based ritualist behind Ashley Burnett & Co. She’s also the author of “Your Spacious and Seasonal Year.”
As we are winding down fall and looking towards winter, we talk about:

create pockets for joy, creativity, rest, and connection with nature
Setting a foundation, an energetic tone, in the morning to ground yourself throughout your day

Today’s guest is Elisabeth Sharp McKetta - a mother, teacher, and writer - here to share her literary approach to intentionality with our podcast community. She teaches for the Harvard Extension School Writing Program, and Oxford University’s Diploma in Creative Writing as well as mentors a small group of writers each year through the Book Year Writer’s Circle. Elisabeth faced combined autopilot-and-overwhelm early in her parenting journey, which sparked a big change. She moved into a tiny house with her husband and two children —an intentional act that inspired my TEDx Talk “Edit your life like a poem.” Her tiny house existence spurred her to apply her literary editing skills to life—a discipline she calls “life-editing.” Today she will be sharing “life-editing” insights and anecdotes from her personal growth guide Edit Your Life: A Handbook for Living with Intention in a Messy World (Penguin: TarcherPerigee, 2023)
In the episode, we cover the following topics:
Examine your life for what it is, what it could be, and what is needed
Edit your life for clarity, growth, and generosity
Enjoy your life, savoring the ordinary and accepting the exceptions
If you would like to venture further into Elisabeth’s writing, teaching, and speaking, you can do so at elisabethsharpmcketta.com.

🎃 5 Things to Be Afraid of This Halloween (and Every Day!):
The Fear of Too Much Stuff: Declutter with intention! Physical clutter weighs on our minds and homes, creating invisible burdens. This Halloween, be brave—let go of what doesn’t bring true value.
Phantoms of Lost Time: Time is precious, yet invisible “phantoms” like mindless scrolling and overcommitments steal it away. Reclaim your hours by being mindful of what fills your days.
The Haunting of Comparison Curses: Social media can trick us into endless comparisons, making us feel we’re not enough. Break the spell and embrace your unique path to a simpler, more fulfilling life.
The Spell of Mindless Spending: With sales around every corner, it’s easy to fall into impulse buying. Avoid the trap! Stick to what truly adds value and joy, and resist unnecessary spending.
The Zombie Routine: Living on autopilot steals your joy and purpose. Snap out of the routine and reconnect with habits that bring meaning. Life is more than just going through the motions.
This month, I’m also excited to distribute our second Let’s Slow Down newsletter! It’s a space for even more connection and insight. Sign up at letsslowdown.net for highlights, resources, and a deeper look into my journey of intentional living.
👻 Special Guest Offer Dr. Heather Penny, from Episode 87, is generously offering her course The Life You’re Made For free through December! Her book inspired me with fresh perspectives on restorative rest and intentionality, and I can’t wait for you all to check out her course. For more details, sign up for the newsletter.
Thank you for joining me in facing these ‘frights’ of modern life. Let’s keep clearing the clutter from our minds, homes, and schedules to create space for true peace and purpose. Remember, simplicity and intentionality are powerful tools to keep those ‘haunts’ at bay. Here’s to a slower, simpler life—one intentional choice at a time.

My guest today is the incredible Leigh Burgess. I was so inspired by our conversation, and I hope you are, too.
After over 20 years in healthcare and business, Leigh went on her own to build Bold Industries Group (BIG), an organization that encompasses her passion for tackling big challenges that when solved, make the world a better place. Her mission is to help leaders solve problems for good. Leigh is a regular contributor to Forbes and Entrepreneur. She was honored as one of Success Magazine’s 125 Leaders Making a Difference and is currently nominated for Success 50 Women of Influence. She also hosts her own podcast called The Bold Lounge.
Leigh and I talk about her burnout in 2020, which led her to leave the corporate world and boldly go out into the world with her own business. She models the power of a growth mindset and has an outlook on life that is both inspiring and energizing. After re-aligning herself with her meaning and purpose, she got intentional in building a life she loves that allows her to live boldy and thrive.
Lessons from Leigh:
-Our late 40s can be an awakening if we just give ourselves a fresh perspective.
-Happy isn’t a destination, it is a choice - a way of being in your own skin.
-Healing, nurturing and creating can help to find clarity.
-Sometimes, you just need to know where to go next. You don’t always need to know A-Z. You don’t need to have it all figured out!
-Managing burnout isn’t a one and done, you need to constantly manage yourself because life goes fast.
-Keep taking risks, being vulnerable, because there is so much strength to gain from those experiences.
-Celebrate your wins!

Dr. Heather Penny is a leadership coach, trusted advisor, celebrated teacher, and engaging speaker and author. She's the author of The Life You're Made For: Finding Clarity, Confidence, and Courage to be Fully Alive, Grace Space and The Bracelet. Her mission is to draw out people’s natural strengths to engage purposefully in their lives and the relationships they value.
In her book, The Life You’re Made For, Dr. Penny says, “Change is easier than you think. Your pace is up to you. It’s not about keeping up with the warp-speed you (or others) may be running, but rather slowing down and doing less.” She asks readers to “consider the cost when you push too hard. You lose clarity regarding what you care about and where you are going. You waste valuable time spinning your wheels, and you often burn out or crash. Slowing down regularly to reassess where you are going and how best to get there - whole and well - cultivates a life of ever-increasing clarity.”
In this episode we talk about work-life balance. How to shift the focus from “how to balance life” to “how to rest restoratively.” RESTorative Rest. “Without learning to trust, you will not be able to rest.” -Dr. Penny
“We need to regain trust in the journey. Trust in one another. Trust that situations will work out. Trust in a beautiful plan for our lives. Trust in green pastures and calm waters. Trust in our decision-making abilities. Trust that if we rest, all will truly be well. We need to rest in the fact that we can rest because life isn’t all up to us.” -Dr. Penny
We discuss The Art of Slowing Down: “Take time to breathe deep, slow your pace, and notice your surroundings. These simple acts will begin to unclench the knot in the pit of your stomach - the one that’s been there so long it’s starting to feel almost normal. The process of discovery honors the intuition within you that’s been saying for years there has to be more than chasing validation while simply surviving. But none of this can happen if all you’re doing is worrying about keeping up.” -Dr. Penny
