  • Rest Before You Burn Out // Rhonda Began

What if rest isn’t something we earn after we’ve done enough, but something we need in order to lead well? In this conversation, Jeff and Terra Mattson sit down with Rhonda Began, executive and sabbatical coach, to talk about the rhythms of rest that leaders so often ignore until burnout forces them to slow down. Drawing from her own experience with overwork and ministry burnout, Rhonda shares why Sabbath, solitude, and sabbatical are essential practices for living and leading from a healthier place.

We unpack what a healthy sabbatical actually looks like, why preparation and reentry matter, and how stepping away can reveal where we’ve built systems that depend too heavily on one person. We also talk about the unique challenges of rest for ministry leaders, parents, and those who feel like everything will fall apart if they stop. Ultimately, sabbatical isn’t about escaping our responsibilities. It’s about creating space to reconnect with God, renew our minds and bodies, strengthen the people around us, and return with greater clarity for what matters most.

    • Rest is a rhythm, not a reward. Sabbath and sabbatical are part of the rhythms God designed for human flourishing, not something we should wait for until we're burned out.
    • Sabbatical can strengthen an organization. Stepping away reveals whether an organization has healthy systems and developing leaders or is overly dependent on one person.
    • Preparation is essential. A meaningful sabbatical requires planning for the transition out, the time away, and the return to work.
    • Rest looks different for everyone. What restores one person may exhaust another, so sabbatical planning should account for individual wiring, interests, relationships, and responsibilities.
    • You don't have to fill your sabbatical with accomplishments. Learning something new can be life-giving, but even a long list of "restful" activities can become another productivity project.
    • Reentry matters as much as leaving. Returning gradually, allowing time to process what was learned, and protecting space for reflection can help leaders carry the benefits of sabbatical into everyday life.
    • Healthy leaders build healthy teams. If everything depends on one person, stepping away can become an opportunity to develop others, share responsibility, and create a more sustainable culture.

  • God Isn’t Asking You to Produce More // Rhonda Began and Bette Dickinson

What if the goal of our lives isn’t to produce more, but to become more deeply rooted? In this conversation, Jeff and Terra Mattson sit down with Rhonda Began and Bette Dickinson to explore what the vineyard can teach us about spiritual formation, leadership, and the seasons of our lives. Through Bette’s years of learning from a master vine dresser, we’re reminded that God isn’t a taskmaster demanding more fruit. He is a loving Vine Maker who tends to us with patience, compassion, and care.

We talk about why pruning isn’t punishment, but an invitation to let go of what no longer serves us so we can give our energy to what God is actually growing. We explore the importance of honoring seasons of rest, recognizing our limits, resisting the pressure to chase every opportunity, and trusting that hidden seasons can be doing some of the deepest work in us.

For anyone feeling stretched thin, stuck in a season of waiting, or tempted to measure their worth by what they produce, this conversation offers a different way forward. We don’t have to force growth. We can abide, pay attention, and trust the Vine Maker to cultivate a life that bears not just more fruit, but good and lasting fruit.

    • God is cultivating us, not squeezing us for more fruit. His work in our lives is motivated by love and a desire for our health and flourishing.
    • Pruning is not punishment. God removes what is no longer serving us so we can invest our limited energy in what He is actually calling us toward.
    • Healthy roots matter more than immediate results. Especially for emerging leaders, seasons of growth, experimentation, and failure can be more important than producing visible fruit.
    • Every season has a purpose. Dormancy, pruning, growth, and harvest are all necessary parts of a healthy life with God.
    • We need to recognize our limits. Flourishing requires resisting the temptation to pursue every opportunity and trusting that we don't have to do everything.
    • Quality matters more than quantity. A flourishing life is not measured by constant upward growth, productivity, or visible success, but by the quality of our relationships, character, and fruit.
    • Rest is essential to sustainable leadership. Sabbath and sabbatical aren't interruptions to our calling. They help create the conditions for long-term health and fruitfulness.

  • God Is On Your Side // Joshua Ryan Butler

Church hurt can leave us questioning everything, including whether God is truly for us. In this conversation, author and pastor Joshua Ryan Butler shares the personal experiences that inspired his book, God Is On Your Side, revealing how seasons of loss, depression, church wounds, and disappointment became places where he encountered the presence of Jesus in deeper ways than ever before.

Drawing rich connections throughout Scripture, Joshua explores how the Gospel of John reveals a Savior who steps into our pain, carries our burdens, and restores what feels broken. Together, we unpack what it means to heal from church hurt without giving up on the Church, why naming our wounds matters, and how healthy community becomes part of God's healing process.

    • Healing from church hurt begins by honestly naming what happened while allowing Jesus to meet us in our pain.
    • God's grace frees us from living under shame, blame, or performance and invites us into restoration.
    • Healthy community is often where God brings healing after we've been wounded in unhealthy community.
    • The places that feel most broken can become holy places where we experience Christ's presence in profound ways.

If you've experienced spiritual disappointment, betrayal, or loss, this episode offers a hopeful reminder that Jesus is not waiting on the other side of your healing. He's already with you in it.

  • Healing Doesn't Begin Until You Feel // Anjuli Paschall

In this episode, we sit down with author Anjuli Paschall to explore why healing begins when we stop avoiding our emotions and invite God into them. Together, we unpack how church culture, family dynamics, and personal history can shape the way we relate to feelings like anger, grief, fear, and shame. We discuss why emotions are not signs of weak faith but invitations to deeper intimacy with God, and how courageously facing our pain can lead to lasting healing, freedom, and wholehearted living.

    Key Takeaways
    • Emotions are not sinful. They are invitations to deeper connection with God.
    • Healing requires feeling our pain instead of covering it with spiritual platitudes or busyness.
    • Our unprocessed wounds often affect the way we parent, lead, and relate to others.
    • Naming our emotions accurately helps us understand what is really happening beneath the surface.
    • Forgiveness is an important part of healing, but it should come after honestly grieving and processing pain.
    • God meets us in our hardest emotions and uses them to draw us closer to Him.
    • Breaking unhealthy family or cultural patterns creates space for healthier relationships and greater freedom.

  • Stop Performing for God // Hosanna Wong

In this episode of Living Wholehearted, we sit down with Hosanna Wong to talk about what it means to uncomplicate our faith and rediscover the real Jesus beneath performance, pressure, and unrealistic expectations. From growing up in an outdoor church on the streets of San Francisco to wrestling with church hurt and ultimately falling back in love with the Bride of Christ, Hosanna shares how God meets us personally in our unique stories, seasons, and struggles.

Together, we explore the roadblocks that keep many of us from connecting with God—busyness, distraction, shame, grief, silence, and expectations—and how Jesus invites us into wholeness instead of exhaustion. This episode is a refreshing call for leaders, parents, and everyday believers to stop striving, stay connected to the true Vine, and embrace the freedom of simply loving God and loving people well.

    Key Takeaways
    • Your relationship with God does not have to look like anyone else’s to be real and flourishing.
    • Many believers are carrying unrealistic expectations that God never placed on them.
    • Church hurt often comes from misrepresenting Jesus, but healing begins when we encounter His true character.
    • Busyness and burnout are not badges of honor; rest and pruning are essential to lasting fruitfulness.
    • God wants to grow good fruit in our lives, not just impressive or visible fruit.
    • Spiritual structures and rhythms are helpful, but they should never replace intimacy with Jesus Himself.
    • Wholeness in Christ means being honest about where we are and aligning our mind, body, heart, and soul toward a God-honoring direction.

  • The Church Isn’t Perfect, But Jesus Still Is // Natalie Runion

In this heartfelt episode, we sit down with Natalie Runion, author, pastor, and founder of Raised to Stay, to talk about the real and often painful journey of healing from church hurt while staying rooted in Jesus. Together, we unpack what it means to deconstruct without destroying, to discern when it’s time to leave a toxic system, and to rebuild faith and community with integrity. We explore how leaders can slow down, lead with humility, and create safe spaces where grace and truth can coexist. Whether you’re a pastor, a church member, or someone who’s walked away for a season, this conversation offers hope, honesty, and a way forward.

    Key Takeaways
    1. Abiding over performing: Staying isn’t about remaining in a specific church—it’s about remaining in Christ, even through disillusionment.
    2. Healthy leaders go slow: True character is formed through time, mentorship, and accountability—not through platform or performance.
    3. Deconstruction can lead to rebuilding: When guided by the Spirit, untangling from religious culture can bring us closer to the heart of Jesus.
    4. Recognize toxicity vs. humanity: It’s wise—and sometimes holy—to walk away from spiritually abusive or narcissistic leadership.
    5. Churches need trauma-informed care: Pastors can’t carry every burden; partnering with trained counselors helps the whole Body heal.
    6. Pastors’ kids need freedom and identity: Ministry starts at home; children aren’t sidekicks, they’re uniquely called by God too.
    7. God is patient with our process: Healing from church hurt takes time, and Jesus remains faithful through every season.

    3. Value of external support: Mentors, counselors, and community provide essential guidance and accountability.

  • Why Emotions Matter // Jon and Tristen Collins

In this episode of Living Wholehearted, we sit down with Jon and Tristen Collins to explore why emotional health is not a one-time achievement, but a lifelong, grace-filled process. Together, we talk about how emotions shape our faith, our marriages, and the way we lead—especially when we’ve been taught to suppress or spiritualize them away.

Drawing from their book Why Emotions Matter, Jon and Tristen invite us to rethink the relationship between emotional maturity and spiritual formation. We discuss the church’s complicated history with emotions, how our bodies communicate what’s happening beneath the surface, and why knowing we are already loved by God frees us to engage the messy work of growth. This conversation is honest, practical, and deeply hopeful—for leaders, couples, and anyone longing to live more wholeheartedly.

    Key Takeaways
    1. Emotional health is an ongoing process, not a spiritual finish line
    2. God’s love is not earned through emotional or spiritual maturity
    3. Emotions act as signals, revealing deeper needs, values, and limits
    4. Suppressing emotions often creates disconnection in marriage and leadership
    5. Spiritual maturity cannot exist without emotional maturity
    6. Our bodies play a vital role in how emotions surface and heal
    7. Grace creates the safety needed for emotional growth

  • Busy Is Not Faithful

In this episode, we get practical and deeply personal about time—how we steward it, protect it, and live it in alignment with what matters most. We share how time blocking, concentric circles, and intentional rhythms of rest have shaped our marriage, parenting, leadership, and faith. Rather than letting life hijack our calendars, we invite you into a way of living where priorities drive decisions, margin creates freedom, and our kids learn—by watching us—that we are human beings, not just human doers. This conversation is about integrity, peace, and choosing presence in a busy, performance-driven world.

    Key Takeaways

    1. Intentionality with time creates freedom, not rigidity—especially in marriage and family life.
    2. Concentric circles bring clarity by helping us say yes or no based on how decisions impact our inner priorities.
    3. Rest, play, and margin must be scheduled if we want them to actually happen.
    4. Our calendars preach—kids learn more from what we model than what we say.
    5. Different wiring requires different rhythms, even within the same marriage or family.
    6. Performance-based living (and faith) leads to burnout, while relational rhythms lead to peace.
    7. You likely have more authority over your time than you think—and reclaiming it is an integrity issue.

What if the greatest battle shaping our leadership, relationships, and faith is happening in our minds? In this episode, we sit down with pastor and bestselling author Max Lucado to talk about the power of thought life and why taming our thoughts is essential to living whole and leading well.

Together, we explore how negative thinking, shame, guilt, insecurity, and lust take root—and how Scripture, neuroscience, confession, and community help us interrupt destructive patterns and renew our minds. Max shares personal stories, practical tools from his book Tame Your Thoughts, and a grace-filled reminder that God is not surprised by us—and He is deeply invested in our mental and spiritual health.

This conversation is honest, hopeful, and grounded in the truth that transformation doesn’t start with behavior change, but with believing what is actually true.

    Key Takeaways
    • You are not your thoughts—but your life is shaped by what you allow to stay in your mind.
    • Confession is not for God’s information; it’s for our freedom.
    • Identifying the UFO cycle (Untruth → False Narrative → Overreaction) helps interrupt destructive behaviors at the root.
    • Renewing the mind is both spiritual and neurological—repetition of truth literally reshapes the brain.
    • Shame thrives in isolation, but healing accelerates in safe, honest relationships.
    • Lust and addiction are not just moral failures but thought-level battles that require grace, boundaries, and support.
    • Scripture isn’t about behavior management—it’s about revealing Jesus and transforming how we think.
