Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

We knew the Dept of Player Safety would come calling after Gabriel Landeskog's hit on Kirby Dach, but the lurking question was if a suspension was coming. It did. Landeskog will miss the next two games for the hit and with the status of Nathan MacKinnon for Saturday's game still unknown, this could be a tougher task than usual for the Avs against the Blues.

Kyle joins me for his usual Friday slot and we rate the first week for ESPN and TNT. What we liked, what we didn't and what can they do better.

The Colorado Avalanche set the tone early with three goals in less than 10 minutes, then went on to a 4-2 win in the season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks. Jack Johnson (you read that right) got the scoring going to Colorado, who made life difficult for new Blackhawks goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

On the other end, new Avalanche goalie Darcy Keumper is making Avalanche fans have Grubauer amnesia pretty quick. He was great when he needed to be as Chicago was forcing the issue in an attempt to get back in the game.

It was all rainbows for the Avalanche. The power play was clearly missing Nathan MacKinnon, and Gabriel Landeskog delivered a dangerous hit late in the game to Kirby Dach that should have him hearing from Dept. of Player Safety.

In the end, it's just how the Avs wanted to start the year. With a win. Now they turn their attention to Saturday to face another divisional rival in the St. Louis Blues

As if the Avalanche needed more to deal with heading into the regular season, their superstar forward Nathan MacKinnon will miss game one against Chicago after contracting COVID. MacKinnon is vaccinated and is asymptomatic so there is a chance he will be ready to go for game two on Saturday against St. Louis.

Cale Makar spoke with the media and he is ready for action. Makar touched on the offseason moves by the Avs, which he is happy with, having Erik Johnson back and how his paring with Sam Girard works well with his style.

Final decisions were made, and they no doubt were difficult. In the end, some surprises took place and the final roster for the Avalanche is set. Sampo Ranta took one of the final roster spots and Jacob MacDonald did not. He did clear waivers and will play with the Colorado Eagles.

There is also no doubt we will see several of the payers who did not make the cut. That is a good problem to have for the Avalanche. They have the depth to call players up when needed and not miss a beat.

So what will the lines look like? I take my best guesses to what I think they will be compared to what they likely are.

Pavel Francouz will be out of the lineup for 3-4 weeks after suffering a lower body injury against Vegas Tuesday night. The injury is not related to the hip surgery that caused him to miss all of last year, but is just the fact he is injured a cause for concern?

The Avalanche to this point in the preseason have not played a game with their full roster of likely starters. Coupled with how the Avs have not been playing particularly well in the preseason, should the coaching staff get as many regulars out on the ice now to prepare for opening night? Or do they stay the course and use the preseason as it is intended. For player evaluations?

Sure it's the preseason, but this is where guys take an opportunity and turn it into something more. A few guys did that (Maltsev, Barron), a lot of guys didn't (too many to list). The Avalanche did some good things in an ugly loss to Vegas, like 3/4 on the power play, Mikko being Mikko and two pretty goals by Burky, but it was mainly forgettable.

The Avs went in with not a single, surefire defensive starter and it showed. Oh, and let the injury bug begin with Pavel Francouz going down. But that's why they call it the preseason.

All fans have a say in how they feel about the teams they support. So throughout the season I will be checking in with some of those fans and friends I have made along the way here and asking them how they feel the Avalanche are doing. Why not start before the season begins with Devin Ruff. Devin has been on the show in the past and was also at the Avs first preseason game against the Minnesota Wild. Devin talks about what it was like to be back watching live Avalanche hockey as well as his expectations for this season. Tune in and subscribe!

The Colorado Avalanche have struggled to get beyond the 2nd round of the playoffs in the last three years. Last year they had their best opportunity to do so and fell flat against Vegas. The Golden Knights aren't going anywhere and likely will be the Avs biggest challenge in getting to the Cup Finals. Is this the year the Avs finally make it and potentially win the Stanley Cup?

Also the Avalanche were in action for their 2nd game of the preseason against the Minnesota Wild. Kyle and I discuss some of the events including Gabe Landeskog in mid season fighting form

A lot of people want to tag the Avalanche as a not so physical team, which an argument can be made for that, but there is a difference between being a physical team and being the most physical team in the league. The Avs don't need to be that team. They aren't built that way. But having a more physical presence is something they needed to address. Did they?

Next, The Hockey Writers discuss three bold predictions for the Avalanche this season, one that is sure to get a discussion going. I throw my own bold prediction into the mix for this upcoming season and it's a good one.

Finally, all our thoughts are with Peter McNab. The color commentator for the Avs announced he was diagnosed with cancer, but he will battle through and continue to call games for the Avs this season. We are ALL pulling for you Peter.
