Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche beat up on the Vancouver Canucks last week, 7-1. You didn't think that was going to happen again did you? The Avalanche got an opponent that played a much better game, but it still was not enough to overcome the Avs offensive weapons, and in the end the Avalanche went on to a 4-2 lead and their third win in a row. Nazem Kadri continued his fantastic start to the season, and at a time when they need him the most with Nathan MacKinnon out, as well as J. T. Compher for the next few weeks.

Up next, the Avs gravel to Seattle for the first time ever to take on Philipp Grubauer and the Seattle Kraken.

It's the same song Avalanche fans have heard for years now. Who will be the one to step up for all the injuries. The answer is different on a game by game basis, but for the first 12 games of the season so far, you could say Nazem Kadri is this teams MVP. While players like Bo Byram and Logan O'Connor do things on the ice that make your eyes pop out, Naz has been going about his business a little quieter than those guys and it has lead to him leading the team in points thus far.

Sammy Girard is another guy who has been unnecessarily been tagged as the fan punching bag. But his play as of late has shown why the Avs signed him to a seven year deal. Was he up for grabs for the Buffalo Sabres in a deal for Eichel? Maybe. But that doesn't mean he is free game for anyone else that wants to deal with the Avs.

In a matter of one hour, we went from the excitement of potentially having a full roster of Avs for the first time all year against Vancouver on Thursday, to all of that being in jeopardy with a possible Nathan MacKinnon injury. Because....Avalanche hockey.

Unrelated to the MacKinnon news, Sampo Ranta was sent down to the Colorado Eagles as Alex Newhook was called up. Ranta didn't do anything bad in the first 10 games of the season, but it didn't do anything eye popping either, hence the move to Newhook who has been eating the AHL alive. Let's hope that carries over for him in this go-round with the Avs.

And then there was the weird news involving Val Nichushkin and a blood test from 2013 that could come back to haunt him in terms of his Olympic availability.

The Colorado Avalanche did call to inquire about the possibility of acquiring Jack Eichel in a trade, but when Buffalo said they would not retain any salary those talks ended. Vegas swooped in and landed the superstar and now the Avalanche have to be asking themselves did they miss an opportunity?

Will Eichel going to Vegas, a team many think will be the Avs top contender to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, force the Avs to make a similar move at some point during the season?

The Avs can take a wait and see approach on a few accounts. Because Eichel won't be back for a few months, they can see where both teams stand later in the season and gauge if it is worth making such a move, and they can gauge who Eichel is out on the ice following major surgery. Definitely something to watch as the season goes on.

The Colorado Avalanche should be playing better than this. Sure it was only game 10 in an 82 game season, but the Avalanche are not putting together a full 60 minutes and it has burned them in the last two games against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Colorado got back big pieces in Andre Burakovsky, Mikko Rantanen and Devon Toews say his first action of the season. But none of that mattered. The top line did not register a point and was a -4 on the night.

Darcy Keumper looked fantastic over the majority of the game, but the man could only do so much before the dam broke.

What do the Avalanche need to do? Kyle joined me to keep my emotions in check and we discuss why the Avalanche have yet to his their sweet spot so far this season.

Game 1 between the Colorado Avalanche and the Columbus Blue Jackets was pretty exciting, even if the Avs came away with one point in an OT loss. The two teams will lace them up again in Ohio on Saturday, so Jay Forster from Locked on Blue Jackets and I get together to discuss game 1 while looking forward to game 2.

The Avs will likely have a more welcomed look on Saturday with the probable return of Mikko Rantanen, Andre Burakovsky and we could even see Devon Toews take the ice for the first time this year.

Sure the Colorado Avalanche were down key players heading into Wednesday nights matchup with the Columbus Blue Jackets. But nobody was concerned after 40 minutes of play that saw the Avs with a 2-0 lead and playing like the better team. Then the wheels fell off in the third.

Columbus scored four unanswered goals and the Avs were reeling. All seemed lost until rookie superstar Bowen Byram threw two pucks on net with the goalie pulled to tie it up. One was redirected by J.T Compher who continues his hot start, and the other sailed in unimpeded with just under a minute to play to send the game into OT.

But, the Avs never even sniffed the puck in the extra time and a bad defensive mistake by Nazem Kadri, who left his man to make a play on the puck, proved to be the Avs undoing in a 5-4 loss.

Let's break it down.

What's the first thing you think of when I say Colorado Avalanche? Joe Sakic? Patrick Roy? Maybe current players like Nathan MacKinnon? It won't be long before we start saying 'injuries'.

The injury bug strikes again and this time is has sent Avs star Cale Makar to the IR (that all rhymed).

But it isn't all hopeless for the Avs. They have played well over the past few games and they have done so with the players taking the ice Wednesday against Columbus.

Finally, it seems like Devon Toews and his wife won the Halloween party the Avalanche threw. What they wore and why have we not seen images of it??

Well here we are again. The department of player safety has done it again. A deliberate and vicious hit to an Avalanche player will go unpunished for the second time this season. At the same time they had no problem handing out a two game suspension to Cedric Paquette of the Montreal Canadiens for a boarding hit that was bad, but nowhere near the hit on Bowen Byram. Trying to figure the department out is as confusing as a riddle.

I also take a look at the Avs schedule for the month of November. The Avs only play 10 games during the month (6 home, 4 away) and they are all against teams from the middle of the standings down. The Avs should be the favorite in all of these matchups. The problem, they only play two division games (Stars, Preds) so making ground on the teams above them might prove difficult. Going 8-2 or 7-3 over the month is very achievable.

Finally, even though this is a hockey podcast, when someone of Von Miller's stature in the world of Colorado sports is traded away, I needed to take a moment to appreciate what he has meant to the Denver Broncos, and why this is the exact reason I could never be a GM in any sport.

The Colorado Avalanche seem to be getting comfortable and settling down after a handful of games. The Avs won their second game in a row which both of them happen to be against division rivals, and get back to a .500 record on the season.

No Mikko Rantanen again, but Sam Girard did return and when you have payers like Logan O'Connor and Jacob MacDonald giving maximum effort with every shift along with non wasted minutes eaten up by Kurtis MacDermid, the Avs are now that team where the opponent has to play every second of the game with minimal letdown.

And for period of the game, the Wild did just that. They had the Avalanche on their heels on several occasions, but the Avs had a bend don't break mentality which carried them to a 4-1 win.

A four point night for Gabriel Landeskog, EJ was making plays on both ends of the ice including a goal, and Darcy Keumper continues to be what the Avs need him to be. Overall, a very strong win.
