Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche needed to put their 8-3 horror movie behind them as quickly as possible and the best way to do that was a win the very next day against the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal has been struggling all season and a loss to them would have had everyone asking if the Avs will ever be a contending team for the remainder of the season. Luckily, that did not happen and while the Avs did not come out strong, they were clearly the better team out on the ice and they skated to a nice and easy 4-1 victory.

Jonas Johansson got the start the day after allowing eight goals in Toronto and redeemed himself. Stopping 18 of 19 shots and looking much more comfortable in net.

However, the Avalanche were without Bo Byram and it is believed he is out again with concussion issues. It is not known if this is a new concussion or lingering effects from his most recent one, but either way this is a serious issue for the young defenseman.

This was supposed to be a game the Colorado Avalanche could hang their hat on. Going on the road against one of the hottest teams in the league in the Toronto Maple Leafs while you yourself are another one of the league's hottest teams. What happened at Scotiabank Arena stays at Scotiabank Arena. At least that should be the mindset of the Avs after getting crushed by the Leafs, 8-3.

There is not much good that can be taken out of this one. It all started even before the opening puck drop when it was announced that Darcy Kuemper was injured and would not suit up. It was downhill from there.

The one positive? The Avs are right back at it Thursday night to attempt to redeem themselves against the lowly Montreal Canadiens. Let's hope they do.

The Colorado Avalanche seem to be in on several players when they become available, but for several reasons never seem to land them. Jake DeBrusk of the Boston Bruins has requested a trade and Boston made no bones about facilitating a deal to move him. The Avs have had interest in DeBrusk in the past, so it would seem logical for them to be interested in him now. But will all the pieces fit for a move to be made? And do the Avs even want to make a move and potentially upset the success they have had recently?

Also, you know him for him several appearances on the show, but Kyle Sullivan is now a full time member of the Locked on Avalanche podcast. Kyle has been reliable and knowledgeable on the sport and the Avalanche, so it was an easy decision to ask him to jump on board full time. World domination is within our grasp!

The Colorado Avalanche had a pretty easy road for the month of November. Playing only 10 games, winning seven of them while plying teams they were mostly superior to.

The month of December looks like a complete 180. Not only will the Avs play a total of 16 games during the month, their only multiple days off are for the Christmas break, they play a five game road trip as well as a four game road trip which will be part of 11 road games in total.

But, the Avs will have the services of Nathan MacKinnon with them as he seems set to return for the first game of the month in Toronto. And he cannot wait to take part in what this team has been accomplishing as of late.

The Colorado Avalanche had a pretty favorable schedule for the month of November, and they took advantage of that. The Avs finished the month with a 6-2 win over Nashville and ended the month with a 7-2-1 record climbing right back into the thick of the division race.

Not only did the Avs show they can follow up a poor performance with a solid one, but captain Gabriel Landeskog showed the league why he is one of the best captains around. Standing up for teammate Mikko Rantanen and leaving Mattias Ekholm bloody and beaten.

It took the Avs a little while to figure out the Anaheim Ducks, but once they did there was no looking back and the Colorado Avalanche extend their win streak to six games with a 5-2 win Wednesday night. Nazem Kadri continues his hot play with two more points (1a, 1a) as well as Cale Makar who found the net yet again. Makar now has five goals in his last three games and currently leads the team with eight.

Which leads us to our next topic, Black Friday Avalanche Deals. Meaning, which players and stats have been a surprise to us so far this season? Is it Kadri's hot play? Logan O'Connor? How about Jayson Megna?

Finally, Jared Bednar. With the win over Anaheim he takes sole possession of the all time winningest coach in Avalanche history. A great achievement considering how it all started.

Has Nazem Kadri been playing out of his mind lately? Yes. Has he been the one to step up in the absence of Nathan MacKinnon? No question. But this early season explosion does not warrant Joe Sakic to throw a blank check at Naz and jump the gun on a knee jerk reaction to sign the forward now, and not wait for his contract to expire at the end of the season. I explain why.

I also took some listener questions which include the Avalanche history if a new team moves to Quebec. Potential trade targets for the Avs, and will Sid the Kid be one of them?

Some parts of it were great, other parts of it were frustrating. But it was damn exciting. The Avalanche came into Monday on a four game winning streak and faced off against an Ottawa team who had not played in a week thanks to games getting cancelled due to COVID. You would think this would be all Avs. It wasn't. Ottawa came to play and the Avalanche had to do everything in their power to regain a 3rd period deficit to take two points in a 7-5 win.

Nazem Kadri continued is fantastic play, getting four more points (1g, 3a) while Cale Makar scored two goals for the 2nd consecutive game.

On the other hand, Darcy Kuemper struggled but came up big once the Avs took the lead back in the 3rd.

A lot to talk about.

The Colorado Avalanche had a memorable first game against the Seattle Kraken. Many expected to see former Avalanche goalie Philipp Grubauer face his former team. But it was announced prior to the game he would not get the start. However, four early goals lead to a goalie change and Grubauer had no choice but to face his former team.

This game was all Avalanche. They were clearly the better team, and it showed.

Prior to the game the Avs announced a two year extension for head coach Jared Bednar. So the team clearly has faith in him bringing the Avs to the promised land of winning a Stanley Cup.

Every time an NHL team faces the Seattle Kraken for the first time this season they will be seeing at least one familiar face. For the Colorado Avalanche they will be seeing two in Joonas Donskoi and Philipp Grubauer. One had no choice in going to Seattle (Donskoi) while they other did (Grubauer). Both have started the season struggling and the Avalanche head into Seattle ready to face off against their old netminder while he and his team struggle to find wins.

Peter Baugh from The Athletic released a very good, but harrowing article on the early career injuries of Bo Byram. He has handled them well and has the right people around him to get him back to full strength, but are the early career concussions a cause for concern long term?

Finally, with the Pittsburgh Penguins being sold for $900 million dollars, Kyle and I take a look at the value of the Avs and discuss if they should be higher up on the list or not.
