Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

Kyle Beach did one of the bravest things a person can do and came out as the player who was sexually assaulted when he was in the Chicago Blackhawks organization. Gil and Chris discuss the interview Kyle gave to TSN's Rick Westhead, how after 11 years he can finally begin his personal healing process, the Chicago Blackhawks failure to put serious allegations over winning and what the NHL can do to ensure this never happens ever again.

This episode was recorded for the Thursday edition of Locked on NHL which discusses weekly Power Rankings, which Gil and I do get into as well.

The entire hockey community is behind you Kyle

Another big game early in the Colorado Avalanche season, and they picked the perfect time to play their best game. On enemy ice, against an undefeated team, the Avs looked much more like the team we have come to know and leave St. Louis with a 4-3 win over the Blues.

Maybe they were listening to this show, but the Avs threw 42 shots on goal compared to the Blues 18. That can only lead to good things, and it did last night.

Now the Avs need to build on that as another division game is around the corner on Saturday. This time it's back at Ball Arena against the Minnesota Wild

The season has not started the way the Avalanche have hoped for to this point. But all is not lost. We all expect the Avs to get on track, but I thought I could throw my two cents in on some things the Avalanche should do to fast track righting the ship. And yes, that includes getting rid of Kurtis MacDermid

You would think the Colorado Avalanche would come out ready in facing the team that eliminated them from the postseason last year. But they didn't. It got better as the game went on, but by then the Avalanche were battling from behind. When you are facing a good team like Vegas, they don't make it easy. In the end, the Avalanche put up a frustrating effort and now sit at 2-4-0 on the season.

It didn't help Jack Johnson got a game misconduct call, which is possibly the worst one I've seen. Stay tuned on if he gets any further punishment from player safety, and I'll say right now that if he does, there needs to be some serious change with who is running that department.

We all know who eliminated the Colorado Avalanche from the post season last year. And a win against them Tuesday night does not replace that. But, it will still feel pretty damn good.

Vegas is down some key players, but injuries is not something you can come complain about to an Avalanche fan. With our without those players, the Avs will be ready to go. One, for some sort of revenge. And two, they want to continue playing the way they did against Tampa.

Bowen Byram's season came to an end against Vegas last year during the regular season. No doubt he is itching to go against the Knights. Will we see some extracurriculars from him to start the game? I wouldn't be against it.

Finally, Colin Wilson penned another article for The Players Tribune. This time, coming out about his addiction. It's a wonderful read and I felt it necessary to applaud him publicly.

The Tampa Bay Lightning, as expected, made the Colorado Avalanche fight for it, but in the end Cale Makar, taking his first ever shoot out attempt, put one past Andrei Vasilevskiy to give the Avalanche the much needed 2nd point and gave the Avs a happier flight back home.

The game, however, was not without controversy, as Steven Stamkos drove Avs defender Samuel Girard hard into the boards in a scary and unnecessary hit. No penalty was called and as of this recording, Stamkos has not heard from the Department of Player Safety. Why? How is this any different than the hit Gabriel Landeskog put on Kirby Dach that got him a two game suspension?

That opening night win against the Chicago Blackhawks seems so long ago at this point. But, the Avalanche did put in a much better last night against the Florida Panthers than they did in their last game against the Washington Capitals. Still, this Avs team is not where it needs to be and improvements are needed.

Officiating didn't help in this one, giving the Panthers two goals of which they probably should not have had, but the Avalanche need to worry about their own play and not what the refs are or are not doing for the other team.

The Avs have one more game to go on this three game road trip. Can they salvage at least one win against the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning?

Get the worst game of the season out of the way early. Let's hope that's what the Colorado Avalanche did Wednesday night with their first road game of the year against the Washington Capitals.

Nothing went right for the Avs. The defense was full of holes, the forwards looks stiff and in the end the Avs gave up 6 goals when it could have been much worse.

Yes, it is still early in the season, but to play the way the Avs did should not happen with the talent on this team. Especially with Nathan MacKinnon making his season debut.

But, can anything good be taken away from this dud? Hit the subscribe button and enjoy!

Reports came out late Monday night that Nathan MacKinnon provided a negative COVID test and was therefore en route to Washington to be with the Avalanche. Another negative test Tuesday morning would clear him and allow him to potentially play against the Capitals. Stay tuned to that news as it was surprisingly NOT making the rounds you would expect news like that to be.

We do know that Mikael Maltsev and Martin Kaut were called up to the Avs. It remains to be seen if they will actually take the ice, but for someone like Kaut, this is another opportunity to show his ability at the next level.

Someone not called up? Alex Newhook. Are we getting to the point with Newhook that Coach Bednar was at with Nikita Zadorov in that he knew the ability he had, he just wasn't utilizing it well enough? Or is this just a young prospect who still needs time to mature?

Ain't a hockey season without controversy. Did Tyson Jost kick the puck in to the net to momentarily tie the game against the St. Louis Blues at 4? I think the survey says yes on that. But so did Chandler Stephenson of the Vegas Golden Knights a few days earlier, and that goal stood. Once again, the inconsistency of everything to do with rulings comes into play.

Also, the Avs were named as a team who called Buffalo as they gauged interest in Jack Eichel. Why we should not think that has any meaning other than a phone call was made.
