Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

We knew the Nashville Predators were going to be without several players due to them being entered into the leagues COVID protocol. What we did not expect was Colorado Avalanche players added to the list as well minutes prior to the game.

The Avalanche announced earlier in the day that J.T. Compher and Andre Burakovski were added to the list, then shortly before the game was set to begin we found out Darcy Kuemper and Cale Makar were on it as well.

So the Avs were going into a game without a lot of firepower, and it showed.

The Avs could never get on the same page and Nashville took advantage of that along with solid goaltending by Juuse Saros.

Friday is an off day and it will be one to watch to see if any or all of the players added to the list can come off of it and take part in a big matchup on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

As of our recording this episode, the Colorado Avalanche game against the Nashville Predators on Thursday night is still a go. However, the Preds announced that 12 people within the franchise entered the COVID protocol consisting of six players and six staff members. Will the game be played as scheduled?

We also take a look at the Central Division standings. The Avs recent success has them climbing up the Central. How good of a spot have they positioned themselves.

Finally, the Avalanche have played a handful of games against the top tier Eastern Conference teams. If the Avs played those teams in the Cup finals, who would we be most favored against and who would we be most worried about based on how the Avalanche have played those teams so far in the season?

We knew it would be a more competitive game between the Colorado Avalanche and New York Rangers, and in the end it was. But that didn't prevent the Avalanche from jumping to a lead and never surrendering it on their way to a 4-2 win for their 2nd win in a week against the blue shirts.

Justin Barron saw his first action in an Avs sweater as Devon Toews entered the COVID protocol, Cale Makar netted a new career high in goals scored on a season.....with 56 games left to play, and Darcy Kuemper held the Rangers in check as the Avs won their 5th game in a row.

A lot to break down in this one!

The NHL salary cap will see a minimal increase over the next couple years, and at the end of the 2023-2024 season it should see a significant increase. This will be one year AFTER Nathan MacKinnon signs his new deal, whatever and wherever (hopefully Colorado of course) that will be. But will the impending increase cause MacKinnon to rethink how he wants to sign his upcoming deal? Does he go short term and then sign again for a few million more, or does he just want to stay where he is in Colorado, sign long term and not care what the league will do with the cap? Kyle and I break it all down.

We also discuss what to expect in tonight's matchup against the New York Rangers. JoJo getting claimed by the Florida Panthers. Petty? And if the latest COVID protocols in China will force NHL players to remove themselves from the Olympic games.

Many people had the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers as a potential Stanley Cup Final, and if last night was any indication, we would all be in for a treat if it were to happen.

The Avs came out on top, 3-2, of a back and forth affair that had everything you want in a hockey game and one thing you don't. On one hand you had one team pull ahead only for the other to storm back and tie it. You had an ending that had you on the edge of your seat and goaltending to match. But you also had one player in Jacob MacDonald get taken off the ice on a stretcher. Can anything be done by the league to prevent this from happening even if the hit could be deemed as "clean"?

In the end, you felt like you had been through a summer blockbuster movie and you had to catch your breath. Of course, it felt better that the good guys won in the end.

It's always a game that is circled on the calendar when the season schedule is released. Even though they play in different conferences, you always look for when the Avs and Red Wings meet up, which will happen again Friday night in Denver.

This is a different Red Wings team than we have been used the past couple seasons. They are younger and can hang with anyone. Thanks to their two rising star rookie in Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider.

But the Avs are coming off a solid 7-3 win against the New York Rangers and want to keep the momentum on their side. This should be a fast and entertaining match-up.

The Colorado Avalanche five game road trip is coming to an end Wednesday in New York against the Rangers. With NY playing their second game in as many days and without their star goalie, what can we expect from the Avs?

We also tackle some great listener questions including why people think MacKinnon is a problems for the Avs, who is in line for awards at the end of the season and if we were tasked with rebranding the Avalanche, what would we do?

This is a fun one! Subscribe and enjoy!

The defensive struggles remain, but the offense continues to excel. The Avalanche needed every bit of their offensive abilities to get beyond the Flyers in a 7-5 win. A game that should not have been that close, but because of those defensive issues (and a rookie prospect in goal), it was.

You can feel good about the Avs getting a win, but does that type of performance make you feel good about heading into MSG and playing a hot Rangers team?

The Colorado Avalanche were down some key players heading into Ottawa Saturday night, and it showed. The Avs found themselves down 5-2. Credit them for battling back and gaining a point by forcing the game to OT, but this being behind constantly needs to stop!

Kyle and Chris discuss the questionable goal that was allowed, the Nathan MacKinnon mistake in OT and the slick Alex Newhook move.

We also talk about injures. Yes, the Avalanche have a lot of them, but you might be surprised where they stand in the league rankings of total missed games.

Finally, we take a look at this weeks games. Could this be the week where MacKinnon goes off on a scoring spree. We discuss why.
