Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche

Well, we kind of saw this type of game coming. When the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild get together, you can almost guarantee a physical matchup. And that is exactly what we got Monday night. Overall, 44 penalty minutes were divided up in the penalty box. On the ice, hit were everywhere, including a nasty one to goalie Darcy Kuemper's head, which ended his night.

In the end, the Avalanche needed another shootout to get the extra point. Pavel Francouz refused to let in another series of shoot out attempts and Mikko Rantanen got the only good goal in the shoot out to win it for the Avs.

The Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes got together twice over the weekend, once at each others house, and it was two different play dates. The Avs had to fight back from giving up a two goal lead to take the game into overtime, then eventually a shoot out to take game one, while game two went the much smoother route of a 5-0 no brainer.

Darcy Kuemper nabbed his first shutout of the season in facing his old team, and Nathan MacKinnon is starting to take games over which is making every time he touches the puck, edge of your seat excitement again.

Chris and Kyle break down the weekend that was while taking a look at tonight's game vs the Minnesota Wild.

Vote for Naz! Up to 10 times a day to make him the 11th player in for the Central Division

https://www.nhl.com/all-star-ballot

The Colorado Avalanche are loaded, and there are only so many spots available for All-Stars. We knew Nathan MacKinnon was in due to his leading the voting for the division captain, and we figured Cale Makar would be in because......he's Cale Makar. But was there enough room for Nazem Kadri considering each team needs to be represented?

The answer, so far, is no. Naz is having a career year, but when you play on a team with superstar names, you will get bumped. And that is what has happened to this point. Naz can still make it in as the final player for the division based on fan voting, but it just seems wrong the guy who is at the top of the league statistically is off the All-Star roster.

The Avs will take on Arizona twice this weekend in a home and home back to back. Arizona has stated recently that Jakob Chychrun is available for trade if the asking price is met. Which is hefty. Should the Avs be in on him? Chris proposes a trade that might make some sense.

Well it's been 24 hours and we have yet to hear from the NHL on the play that gifted the Nashville Predators an OT win against the Colorado Avalanche. Probably give it another day, and if still nothing, we can probably expect nothing.

We eerily received a listener question prior to the Avs / Preds game if refs should wear cameras, so we can see what they see. Would this have made a difference on this play in particular? Probably not, but since refs are not made available to the media, we would at least get a video angle from their perspective.

Chris and Kyle also talk about the very interesting Athletic article that discusses the race to build the biggest and the best practice facilities around the league in an effort to impress free agents. Teams like the Seattle Kraken and the LA Kings have spared no expense to build facilities that not only house the franchise, but are available to the community for various events. Are the Colorado Avalanche trailing in the aspect and would this be enough for potential free agents to jump ship. And is this a reason Philipp Grubauer did this very thing?

Finally, we got new on Bo Byram, and it's what we expected. He did not play due to continued lingering concussion symptoms, and you can't help but this he will be out for an extended time this time. Which is probably the best thing for him. We are all behind you Bo.

You never want to see the officials involve themselves so much in the game that it effects the outcome. And 99% of the time they don't. Every so often, they do and that was the case last night for the Colorado Avalanche against the Nashville Predators.

It was a hard fought game. An enjoyable game. The Avs had to fight back yet again and regulation time wasn't enough to determine a winner. In overtime, both teams were gaining opportunities. Then, the Avs were called for too many men on the ice. Upon further review, not only was it a bad call, but the refs got the wrong team. Nashville, in their mustard yellow uniforms, can be seen with easily five guys on the ice. Which we know in OT is two too many. But the call stood, the Preds went on the power play, and the rest is history.

Chris and Kyle, while not happy, break it all down

Some will say they saw a trap game coming a mile away, and if the Avs ended up losing against the Seattle Kraken, they would have been right. The Colorado Avalanche didn't play their best game of hockey Monday night against the Seattle Kraken. In fact, the team they beat 7-3 not that long ago held a 3-1 lead late in the 2nd period. But we know how this Avalanche team can score, and with their back against the wall they did just that.

Devon Toews redirected a puck past former Avalanche Philipp Grubauer with his skate to tie it, the Nazem Kadri finally was able to get one past Gru after five unsuccessful attempts prior for the game winner.

It wasn't pretty, but the Avs continue their winning ways with their 5th in a row and 12th straight at home.

The Colorado Avalanche looked like it was going to be 'worst game of the year version 2.0' for their second and final matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Avs found themselves down 3-0 early in the 1st, then 4-1 in the 2nd. But if there is one thing this team has it is a no quit mentality. They never went away and before you knew it, Devon Toews was beating Leafs goalie Jack Campbell for the extra point.

It wasn't all pretty, but once the Avs got the confidence back that they could hang with this Leafs team, they found ways to put pucks in the net.

Chris and Kyle break it all down and get you ready for tonight's matchup against the Seattle Kraken!

It's always nice to get two points against a division rival, and it's even better doing it in dominating fashion. That's just what the Colorado Avalanche did in rolling over the Winnipeg Jets, 7-1. The top line for the Avs saw 12 total points and Colorado used one of their best periods of the season in the 2nd to separate from Winnipeg, then used the 3rd to turn on the afterburners. All while getting all seven goals past one of the best goalies in the NHL.

The Avs have to feel as confident as they have all season, and they should. But can they carry that confidence into the weekend when they try to avenge their worst lost of the season when the Toronto Maple Leafs come to town.

Moments like this are rare. When something some extraordinary happens the entire league is talking about it. What's even more rare is when it a player on your team they are talking about.

Thus is the case with Cale Makar and his OT game winner against the Chicago Blackhawks. You couldn't scroll for more than 5 seconds without another media outlet or personal account on any social media platform talking about or sharing the video of Cale Makar spinning around Kirby Dach and then netting one backhand against Marc-Andre Fleury. It was everywhere. So what does Makar need to do to follow that up?

Chris and Kyle also take a look at the rest of the month of January for the Avs and who their opponents are. Is it an easy road, a difficult one or somewhere in the middle?

The Colorado Avalanche looked good in spots and struggled in others. They got up by two goals, then gave up the lead. But they never gave up and fought to force overtime against the Chicago Blackhawks.

OT has typically not been very good for the Avs. But Tuesday night will be remembered for one thing. Cale Makar turning Hawks forward Kirby Dach into pudding with a move that left your jaw on the floor. Not only was his pirouette a thing of beauty, he still had to get past a Hall of Fame goalie in Marc-Andre Fleury. Some slick stickhandling and a lazer sharp back hand on the roof of the goal but the game away, and the Avs walked away from Chicago with two points. It was an all-time goal for the best defenseman in the NHL.

Chris and Kyle break down a very exciting and entertaining game!
