Locked On Browns - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Browns

We take a look at the top three players drafted by the Cleveland Browns since 2010. We'll give you a rundown of each player and discuss what makes them the best choice for the Cleveland Browns in the upcoming NFL draft. It’s no secret to the Browns or their fans that the team hasn’t made many great draft picks, especially in the first round. But recently they have had several successful draft picks that are a major part of the team’s recent upswing. With the 2023 NFL Draft less than a week away, let’s look back at three picks that have had a major role in the teams’ new success:

Joel Bitonio

Not only is Joel Bitonio the longest-tenured Cleveland Brown, but he’s also one of their best players. Bitonio has seen it all in the Dawg Pound and that experience has helped build a positive culture with the current team. Seeing it not work so many times has probably helped Bitonio learn how it can work. He has seen awful team leaders and awful coaches. Like anyone, you can learn lessons from your negative experiences. If Bitonio is on board with something the rest of the team has no other choice but to be on board as well.

Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb has been one of the league’s best running back since he first stepped on the field in 2018. The Cleveland Browns have a good one. Though he originally started as a backup to Carlos Hyde it was evident from his fourth game against the Raiders when he had three carries for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns that Chubb was a special talent.According to PFF, Nick Chubb is their highest-graded player from the 2018 class with a 94.5 overall career grade. It has been truly fun watching Chubb play in Cleveland and even if the team throws the ball more in 2023 Chubb will be a major factor if the team is a contender this year.

Myles Garrett

It’s not going to be a long debate about who the Browns best player is and has been over the last few years. Myles Garrett has been everything the Browns could have imagined when they drafted him first overall in 2017. Even when the rest of the team was awful and losing games they shouldn’t have, Garrett was always a bright spot on the roster. He is the player other teams have to game plan for and he has single-handedly won a few games for the Browns in 2020. Garrett is one of the few Browns drafted players to receive a second contract of substance. He’s one of the faces of the Browns franchise and is going to be a stud on the defense for years to come. Myles Garrett became the Browns all-time sack leader in only his 5 year with the team.

In this video, we're going to take a look at the Browns' decision to pick a WR or RB in the upcoming NFL draft. The Browns Have a Big Decision to Make - WR or RB? We'll be discussing the pros and cons of each option and giving our predictions on who the Browns will pick. So make sure to watch to find out who the Browns pick in the upcoming NFL draft!

Elijah Moore was acquired in a trade with the New York Jets this offseason and will be vital part of Cleveland's offense in 2023. Marquise Goodwin is a solid veteran that was signed as a free agent this offseason. He last played with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. This video will explore their impact on the Cleveland Browns and highlight the reasons why Cleveland was interested in acquiring them. With their contributions, the Browns should have a much-improved wide receiving unit in 2023!

As the Cleveland Browns saw their passing offense finish in the bottom-quarter of the league, they made a concerted effort to get more explosive this offseason. By both trading for third-year wide receiver Elijah Moore and signing veteran speedster Marquise Goodwin, the Browns have taken a step forward in that department. Now with a crowded wide receiver room, what is the outlook of the wide receiver position for the Browns in 2023 and beyond? We analyze here the depth of the position, the versatility, the roles that are filled, and what still might be needed at the wide receiver position in Cleveland. As Elijah Moore comes to Cleveland, there is the idea that he is going to be strictly a slot receiver, but that has never been the case in his career. In 2022 with the Jets, Moore’s reps were split 50/50 out wide and in the slot. Even in 2021, his rookie season, Moore played just 28 percent of his snaps from the slot.

Host Jeff Lloyd is joined by Sports Illustrated's Pete Smith for a deeper conversation on what are the Cleveland Browns real draft needs leading into this weekend's 2023 NFL Draft.

Even though Cleveland Browns General Manager has done extensive work on the defensive tackle room there still isn't a second starter to this point. So unless something changes the Browns have to have this as their focus come this weekend. Zacch Pickens out of South Carolina seems to be a guy who could fit perfectly and could be had in the range of the Cleveland pick at 74.

The 2023 NFL Draft has a much better running back class than wide receiver class but yet so many Dawgpound fans seem to want to give the Browns a wide receiver who will have to fight to get playing time as opposed to drafting a running back who can walk in complete the RB room.

Pete gives us his dream Browns mock draft of picks at 74,98, and 111.

In the latest Locked on Browns Podcast Mock Draft the Browns take Defensive Lineman Karl Brooks at pick #74. Bowling Green defensive lineman Karl Brooks projects as a hybrid-type defensive lineman in the NFL. Brooks has had a tremendous two-year stretch of splash play production for Bowling Green, and he will look to continue that momentum into the pro game—although I do have some questions about how he wins against MAC competition and how he will need to play differently against NFL talent to see comparable results.

Originally an unranked recruit, Brooks played his high school football for Sexton High School in Lansing, Michigan. He was a member of Bowling Green’s recruiting class of 2018 after initially committing to Grand Valley State and receiving minimal offers. Bowling Green offered him late in the process and he quickly flipped his commitment.

Brooks has some really enjoyable moments on film; he’ll bull-rush tackles or finesse against oversets and come crashing into the pocket to disrupt opposing passers. You wouldn’t necessarily expect such a diverse pass-rush pallet from a bigger guy, but he’s flashing inside counters, spin moves, and all sorts of rush counters with his hands. I like that he is capable of straight bulling soft setting tackles, too—that gives him an element to fall back on as he continues to develop as a player. He’ll need it too, given I don’t think his first step is going to be a consistent threat in the NFL. But he’s going to give himself an opportunity to find snaps on passing downs because he clearly offers a rush plan and he’s a high-motor and effort player who can be relentless in pursuit. He’s a bit of a tweener from a skill set perspective relative to his build and athletic profile, though, and he’s going to have to evolve one way or another to build up his opportunities beyond a designated pass rusher role in the right situation.

Brooks’ ability to stack blocks and negotiate the point of attack is in need of further development if he’s going to play on early downs or be a starter someday. I don’t have a great deal of certainty in the functional length that he plays with, and I don’t see the same pop in his hands when linemen are driving toward him as I do when he’s afforded the chance to attack into his rushes and that costs him leverage and ground at the point. Teams who want to run the ball will likely test him early in his career if he’s on the field until he can right the pad-level inconsistencies and find a power posture more often. Even then, his violence and efficiency to disengage and deconstruct need to have more to it.

The NFL suspends 5 players for alleged violations of gambling policy. Four players from the Detroit Lions and one from the Washington Commanders were flagged by the league, with three of the players suspended indefinitely. The NFL hit four Detroit Lions and one Washington Commander with heavy suspensions for allegedly violating league gambling policy, officials said Friday. Wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore of the Lions, and defensive end Shaka Toney of the Commanders were "suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2023 season for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season," according to a league statement.

Lions WRs Stanley Berryhill and Jamerson Williams were each banned from the first six games of this upcoming season, though they can still participate in preseason activities with their team, the league said. The Lions cut ties with Cephus and Moore in wake of the suspensions. “These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules," Lions GM Brad Holmes said in a statement. "We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately. We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.” A representative for the players' union, the NFLPA, declined comment on Friday. While the league was short on details, it insisted no games were compromised by the players' alleged wagering.

"The gambling policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, including players, prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility," according to the league. "A league review uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way."

The Browns have landed their next big addition to their offense. A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal that the Browns have acquired receiver Elijah Moore from the New York Jets, along with the Jets' third-round pick, No. 74. New York will receive the Browns' second-round pick, No 42. With the Browns, Moore fits into a receiving corps where Amari Cooper is the obvious No. 1 option, while Donovan Peoples-Jones is coming off of a break-through season in his third year in the NFL. David Bell struggled to get consistent targets as a rookie third-round pick out of Purdue, while injuries hampered the abilities of rookie Michael Woods II and second-year pro Anthony Schwartz to get on the field consistently a year ago.

What the Browns have been looking for, though, is a receiver who has the speed to take the top off the defense. Schwartz was drafted with that thought in mind but hasn't produced anywhere close to the expectations. Moore, the 5-foot-10, 178-pound former 2021 second-round pick out of Ole Miss, ended up being in an odd-man-out situation with the Jets. New York's pursuit of quarterback Aaron Rodgers has led it to sign receivers Allen Lazard and, on Wednesday, Mecole Hardman.

Those additions, as well as 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson and the re-emergence of Corey Davis last season, all have played a role in Moore being available. The Browns were more than happy to pounce to bring in the young talent in order to provide a change of scenery. Moore missed a Week 4 game against the Tennessee Titans in his rookie season due to a concussion, the final five games while being on injured reserve with a quad injury. In the 11 games he played, he was targeted 77 times with 43 catches for 538 yards and five touchdowns.

Last season, Moore played in 16 out of a possible 17 games, the exception being when he was inactive for a Week 7 game against the Denver Broncos as a team-disciplinary measure. He would be targeted 65 times with 37 catches for 446 yards and one touchdown. Moore has been utilized both out wide and, in the slot, almost identically, especially last season. He was lined up wide on 385 offensive snaps in 2022, compared to 341 snaps in the slot. As a rookie, Moore was used more out wide, with 347 snaps there compared to 125 snaps in the slot.

Deshaun Watson gives his opinion on the Cleveland Browns and how they can make the playoffs in 2023. Watson armed with even more talent in the passing game feels the Cleveland Browns can reach "the dance."

The Browns start their nine-week voluntary offseason program this week. The program will ultimately culminate with a three-day mandatory minicamp June 6-8. That minicamp will include extensive on-field work. This week — the first two weeks, really — is entirely limited to meetings, strength and conditioning work and any injury rehab. The on-field work can start in the three-week second phase of the offseason program, which starts the week of April 31. The program's third phase, the organized team practices or OTAs, will be three-day periods over the final two weeks of May. The Browns actually will shave off a week of the offseason program compared to the rest of the league. Stefanski is doing so due to the early start of training camp because of the team's participation in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 6. It may just be the start of the process to get to the season. That doesn't mean there aren't some questions to look at as it gets underway. Yes, that reads "Deshaun Watson's offense" and not "Kevin Stefanski's" or "offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt's." It's not that Stefanski and Van Pelt, among others on staff, haven't spent months since last season ended trying to craft an offense best suited to Watson. It's that point specifically.

The Browns have added several new players to that offense. They traded for still-young receiver Elijah Moore and signed veteran receiver Marquise Goodwin, while also signing Jordan Akins, one of Watson's former tight ends. Now, how does all of that start to come together?

The biggest change organizationally for the Browns after last year's 7-10 season was at defensive coordinator. Joe Woods was let go and veteran defensive coach Jim Schwartz was hired. Schwartz's mission is simple. The tools are there, at least on paper. Schwartz has All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett, Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward and a handful of intriguing young players from which to start. On top of that, the Browns went out in free agency and made sure to add to that group. Defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson (Vikings), edge rusher Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and two-time Super Bowl champion Juan Thornhill (Chiefs) were among the biggest-ticket additions over the last month. "Like we talked about earlier, you're always looking for more, and I promise you every coach wants more. But, yeah, Jim and the staff, they're excited. We're meeting for a long time right now, just trying to figure out where we want to go with this defense and hammer it away so that April 17 we're ready to go when the players show up."

With the 2023 NFL draft now just eight days away, mock drafts are getting last-minute pushes to prepare for what kind of hauls could be on the board. One of those mock drafts was completed by The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, who completed a full seven-round simulation. Even though the Cleveland Browns do not have a first or second round pick, they do have six picks in the middle rounds of the draft to play around with. With defensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker, and wide receiver still lingering, who did the Browns land in Brugler’s simulation? We take a look there next to see who the draft expert mocked to Cleveland.

Round 3, pick no. 98: EDGE YaYa Diaby, Louisville

It seems unlikely for the Browns to double up on defensive linemen in the 2023 NFL draft, but given the need upfront it would not be overly surprising. Diaby is a bit overhyped compared to my board, but he is an athletic player with a high floor who can come in and at least be a rotational contributor. Given who was available, Alabama defensive tackle Byron Young would be a better pick, but if they go Dexter with their first pick, then the value of Diaby matches here.

Round 4, pick no. 126: S Jammie Robinson, Florida State

This is a stellar pick. As the Browns look to replace Ronnie Harrison in 2023 and potentially look to replace Grant Delpit as he plays out a contract year, there are fewer players with a higher football IQ than Robinson. While his size and athletic profile are subpar, Robinson presents the ability to understand the game of football at a high level from the slot, from the box, and the third level of the defense. For just the cost of the 126th pick in the draft, Robinson would be a home run for the Browns.

Round 5, pick no. 140: CB Jakorian Bennett, Maryland

The Browns will never turn down more depth in the secondary, but the selection of the athletic Jakorian Bennett feels redundant unless the team does not feel Robinson could play in the slot. The Browns already have three young and promising cornerbacks on the roster, and the cost of a fifth rounder is not steep, but drafting ahead at a position of deep depth is a bit unwarranted.

Round 6, pick no. 190: RB Keaton Mitchell, East Carolina

Look for the Cleveland Browns to address running back depth in the 2023 NFL Draft. Here in the sixth round, Brugler gave the Browns one of the more fun players at the position in this class. While there is reason to believe they may try to take a better one earlier, Keaton Mitchell is a fine sixth round draft pick. While he is not overly elusive, Mitchell is linearly explosive and can burn when he gets into the open field.

Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and Berea Mayor Cyril Kleem, Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne and others are due to make one or more big announcements starting next week that will include the lakefront football stadium, the Browns’ Berea campus, mixed-use developments around both plus a relocated Shoreway. The announcements will be about changes intended to activate the downtown lakefront by the end of this decade in ways it hasn’t been since the 1930s and to create a year-round fan-friendly village around the team’s suburban headquarters and practice facility, according to two sources familiar with the developments.

There are still many unknowns at this early stage. But between now and when the venue formerly known as FirstEnergy Stadium (reverting back to Cleveland Browns Stadium) is rebuilt, many of the team’s and Haslam Sports Group office staff will be temporarily relocated from their Berea headquarters to makeshift offices at the stadium and to remote working.

During the renovation of the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, the Browns offseason training programs may have to be relocated for up to one year. Expansion of the campus will take longer — more than one year and may be carried out in phases depending on financing and city approvals. The expanded campus will reportedly include a new hotel, restaurants, shops, conference facilities. The Haslams and the city have already acquired more than 30 acres of land and demolished many homes and a church for this massive expansion of the Browns’ Berea facilities. It isn’t publicly known yet where the Browns will play, but Columbus is a likely location. The Haslams already have a presence there with their Columbus Crew Major League Soccer club. Its venue, the two-year-old, soccer-specific Lower.com Field, seats only 20,371. When the Browns played their first Orange & Brown Scrimmage on Aug. 7, 2015, they played to 49,734 fans at the Ohio State University’s 102,734-seat Ohio Stadium (aka The Horseshoe). It was the highest attendance for any Browns open practice or Family Day since at least 2005. The Browns would like to regain their fan dominance in Ohio’s capital city, taking attention away from their AFC North Division rivals Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers.
