Locked On Browns - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Browns

The Dawg Pound has essentially lost its advantage in Cleveland. How did this happen and what do the Browns need to do to get it back? Cleveland received their team's name “the Browns” from the man who started the franchise from Day One: Paul Brown. The franchise was a member of the eight-team All-America Football Conference, an NFL rival league from 1946-1949. Before the team had its first game, there was a name-the-team contest. The winner was “Panthers.” But a man named George T. Jones contacted the new Cleveland franchise and told them he owned the rights to the name “Cleveland Panthers” from a team he once owned in 1927 and wanted to be paid a large sum in order to relinquish the rights. Soon thereafter, the Browns were chosen. Perhaps Browns refer to some sort of hunting dogs, like Bluetick Hounds?

So, when the new Browns came back into the NFL fold in 1999, the Dawg Pound was designed into the fabric of the new arena. The universal chant that almost every sports team in America uses (that does not display an American Indian tribe) goes something like, “Here we go (insert team name), here we go!” But in the Dawg Pound, the chant is slanted to “Here we go Brownies, here we go! Woof! Woof!” In old Cleveland Municipal Stadium, any Browns player who intercepted the ball for a touchdown would run up that short grass mound to the Pound and be welcomed by the throngs of fans usually met with beer thrown on them, which was meant as part of the celebration and was never considered disrespectful. Items such as bones, batteries, various dog treats and such were reserved for the offense, and of course - the other teams.

You would think that a name as timeless as “The Dawg Pound” would be derived from some corrections institution. Perhaps a player who was released from some dangerous prison and was a member of a gang here. And when this former con-now player would hit someone pretty dang hard, folks would say, In 1985, the defensive backfield featured Hanford Dixon, Al Gross, Frank Minnifield and Felix Wright, plus a stellar linebacker crew of Tom Cousineau, Eddie Johnson and Chip Banks. The defensive front had Bob Golic, Carl Hairston and Reggie Camp. During practices, the entire defense had a problem with getting into the backfield to disrupt the passing game as rookie quarterback Bernie Kosar was picking them apart each day. Minnifield and Dixon came up with a game to challenge play during those training camp practices in an attempt to encourage the defense to get to Kosar and stop the deluge of pass completions and then having to read about it in the next day’s paper.

Defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey is in more hot water as he gets set to enter just his second season with the Cleveland Browns. Charged with assault on a woman, this adds to the list of issues he has faced since being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. According to Cleveland dot com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns are “aware of the situation and are gathering more information.” It is hard to imagine Winfrey has much of a leash left with the organization after a rocky rookie season that resulted in a suspension, benching and inactive streak, and more. There will be no shock if Winfrey is released by the Browns. Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was charged Tuesday with misdemeanor assault against a woman he is dating, according to court documents obtained by Fox 26 Houston. Per the Harris County documents, Winfrey is accused of grabbing and pulling the woman in a way that caused bodily injury on Monday. He was arrested at 7 p.m. CT on Monday. Winfrey, 22, is coming off a rookie season with the Browns in which he recorded 22 combined tackles, one tackle for loss and half a sack. The Browns selected him in the fourth round, 108th overall, in the 2022 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-4, 292-pounder entered the draft after a college career that began at Iowa Western Community College and ended at Oklahoma, where he earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in both of his seasons. He had 11 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in his senior season, as well as the most pressures among Big 12 defensive linemen, per Pro Football Focus. His rookie season saw him play 41% of the Browns' defensive snaps, though Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported he was disciplined for an unspecified incident in September.

Browns DB Greg Newsome's has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his agent. Newsome has been linked to a lot of trade rumors and it's unclear what the future holds for him at the NFL level. What's behind his decision to go with Rosenhaus? Usually, the hiring of super agent Drew Rosenhaus has been bad news for the Cleveland Browns. And this is what third-year cornerback Greg Newsome II did today. There was speculation that Newsome II wanted out of Cleveland after being forced into the slot in 2022, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Newsome is excited to play for new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and is happy in Cleveland. Newsome II will be in attendance as the Browns begin their offseason programming on Monday as well, Schefter reports.

Greg Newsome II has made plenty of noise over the course of this offseason that he wasn't happy with his role on the Browns last season. That's led to plenty of speculation that the cornerback wants out of Cleveland. That speculation took on a new life on Tuesday morning. That speculation, though, was quickly squashed. Newsome, who has two years plus the possibility of a fifth-year option remaining on his rookie deal, recently returned to his original agent, Drew Rosenhaus, after having been with Klutch Sports last season. Rosenhaus tweeted the reunion on Tuesday morning. Moments after Rosenhaus' tweet came another one from the Orange and Brown Report's Brad Stainbrook saying Newsome "would like to be traded," according to a source. However, both Newsome and Rosenhaus quickly went to work trying to defuse the situation. Rosenhaus, when asked by the Beacon Journal if Newsome requested a trade, texted back, "No he has not." The agent did meet with Browns general manager Andrew Berry. Newsome himself took to Twitter to refute the story. He did so by quote tweeting the original Stainbrook tweet which said he asked for a trade.

The Browns are scheduled to begin their voluntary offseason training program on Monday. Newsome is expected to be in attendance. Newsome and new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz have talked this offseason. Part of those discussions involve his role on the defense. . With the emergence of 2022 rookie Martin Emerson Jr. on the outside, Newsome found himself playing in the slot for a significant number of snaps when the Browns went to a three-cornerback look. "I like playing outside, too, so I mean it's definitely a role that I would like to have, but more so I feel like I would like to have it more on a more matchup basis instead of just having me just be inside the whole time. So, yeah, that's something that I'm kind of going to work through."

On this episode of the Locked On Browns Podcast we discuss the possible prospects for the Cleveland Browns Draft. The Browns Draft 2023 Draft Board includes Gervon Dexter, Florida and Jonathan Mingo, Ole Miss. Find out what other prospects the Browns have on their Big Board. This is your place for all the Browns news and rumors.

The Cleveland Browns will almost definitely make further changes in the offseason of 2023. Remember that even if there is no perceived glaring need in their roster, the Browns surely want to be as deep as possible. Of course, they can do so through the draft. Here we’ll look at which rookie prospects the Browns will draft with each of their picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

When the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson in the 2022 offseason, it left them with eight picks for the 2023 NFL Draft. That’s a healthy number, but their first pick is not until the middle of the third round. Yes, this presents added pressure for Browns GM Andrew Berry to make the most of their picks. Still, having multiple selections in Rounds 3-5 and one pick each in Rounds 6 and 7 is not too bad at all.

Again, the most significant drawback for the Browns in the upcoming draft is their lack of a first-round pick. Recall that this happened because of their deal with the Houston Texans for Watson. With Watson expected to play the entire 2023 season, Browns fans will hope they get a good return for their draft capital. Despite this, the Browns still have enough picks to benefit from the anticipated depth of the 2023 NFL Draft class. Although they will not have early picks, they are still in a position to improve their team.

Let’s look at who the Browns will choose in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Cleveland Browns: 2023 NFL Mock Draft

3rd round 74th overall pick: DT Gervon Dexter

Dexter has a unique physical skill set with uncanny explosiveness for a 310-pounder (1.70-second 10-split). He’s wholly unrefined, though, and earned only a 65.7 overall grade in 2022.

3rd round 98th overall pick: WR Jonathan Mingo

Mingo's 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame is almost running back-like. That’s unique in this class. He showed serious improvement as a route runner this past fall with a career-high 51 catches for 861 yards.

The story of the Browns' linebackers in 2022, unfortunately, starts with injuries, which impacted the group's production all season. The bad injury luck started with Walker, the position's top player and a defensive captain who suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3. Over the next 11 games, three of the other top linebackers — Owusu-Koramoah, Phillips and Takitaki — joined him on injured reserve. The Browns had no choice but to lean on guys who either started the season near the bottom of the depth chart or players who were acquired to patch holes, and the constant change was one reason why the Browns struggled to stop the run and make game-changing plays in the middle of their defense.

High Point

The best performance by a linebacker all season came from Fields in Week 12 in a win against the Texans. A 2021 fifth-round pick, Fields tallied his first career interception, touchdown, forced fumble and fumble recovery all in the same game and was the MVP of the Browns' 27-14 win. His big plays came on a day when the offense, which featured the Browns debut for QB Deshaun Watson after a 700-day absence between starts, struggled to move the ball and find points. Fields, however, helped the Browns' defense and special teams do what was needed to secure the road win.

Low Point

The linebackers — and defense as a whole — couldn't do much in the Browns' 23-10 loss to the Bengals in Week 14. Jones did record an interception, but Bengals RB Joe Mixon still rushed for 96 yards and his backup, Samaje Perine, scored a touchdown. To make matters worse, Owusu-Koramoah suffered an injury and was carted from the field late in the game. He became the fourth linebacker to be placed on injured reserve with a season-ending injury.

Who's Back for 2023?

Owusu-Koramoah, Phillips and Fields are all under contract for next season.

Free Agent Signings 2023

The Browns brought back Sione Takitaki and Anthony Walker in Free Agency. Both linebackers expressed interest in staying with the team following season ending injuries. The Browns will look to add depth in the 2023 NFL Draft.

2023 Outlook

The Browns could opt to add new pieces to the position in 2023. They could also decide to re-sign a few of the top players who are set to become free agents and look to run it back with a group that likely would've played much better had injuries not crushed the position. Those decisions could come down to how new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz prefers to mold the defense, but no matter what, the Browns know they'll have at least two young and still-growing players at the position in Owusu-Koramoah and Phillips.

You'll be shocked Who PFF Has the Browns Taking With Their First Pick In The 2023 NFL Draft! In this video, we'll give you all the info on who PFF has the Browns taking with their first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. So be sure to watch to find out who the Browns are going to select with their first pick!

Jordan Battle is a senior defensive back that played more than 50 games for the Crimson Tide. On a talented Alabama defense, Battle has emerged as one of the leaders, both vocally and also with his high-level play on the field. Battle is a versatile defensive back that has played both strong and free safety, in one-high or two-high schemes, while also aligning in the nickel position and playing in the box. At each position, Battle has made high-IQ plays and makes plays in both the run game and pass game.

Battle appears to have good overall size and length that combined with his fluid movement skills give him a lot of tackling range as a run defender. Battle has the ability to close quickly from distance (10-15 yards) and make technically-sound tackles on runners. Battle also shows to have a physical temperament and an aggressive nature to his game. When he can properly line up the ball carrier, he will seek the big hit. In today’s game where the screen game is an extension of the run game, Battle does a good job of quickly diagnosing developing screen plays and accelerating to disrupt the play with physical play. Battle’s IQ, athleticism, and physicality make him a high-level run defender.

In pass coverage, there are many things to like about Battle as a defensive back. Battle appears to have fluid hips that allow for him to make smooth transitions when he has to flip his hips and run with defenders. He also shows to have plus-level speed in that he can carry receivers vertically and run with them stride for stride down the field. But Battle’s best plays come when he can play 10-12 yards off the ball in a flat foot read and play the robber role to read and diagnose route combinations. From this position, Battle can jump routes to make the interception, or he can deliver the big hit to receivers on crossing routes. Battle has sideline-to-sideline speed, which shows he has good range to make plays on the football. Battle moved from taking most of his snaps closer to the line of scrimmage to playing the free safety position, which affected his overall ball production, but the athletic ability is still present in Battle’s game.

The Cleveland Browns Michael Woods suffered a ruptured achilles hell during workouts with Quarterback Deshaun Watson. Woods in his second year was one of many vying for the possible spot in the wise receiver room for 2023. Woods has been diligent in his workouts and the team featured he and Alex Wright in their Youtube series "Unleashed." Woods could miss all of the season but could face an easier path to making the roster in '24 than he would have in this year.

The room now has Anthony Schwartz, Daylen Baldwin, and Jaelon Darden competing for a spot but with Andrew Berry already bringing in draft eligible wide receivers does this now put the team in a spot where they draft not one, but two at the position.

Cleveland is interested in the Quarterback class having already had one in for a visit and another one coming up. Kellen Mond is rumored to be liked but has not taken any live reps as of yet with this team. If they can get a rookie signal caller who has lengthy collegiate experience it could give that rookie a path to the QB3 job.

The Cleveland Browns are bringing in veteran defensive tackle Al Woods for a visit in what could be the final piece of the free agent puzzle. If woods plays in 2023 it would be his 14th Nfl season. Has plenty of experience as a nose and the size to do it at 6'4 330 lbs. His locker room reputation has been solid over the years having played for two different teams more than once. He would be the perfect late signing to pair with Dalvin Tomlinson.

The Browns are hosting linebacker Trenton Simpson for a official Top 30 visit, so if you're meeting with the top linebacker in the draft you most likely are taking a linebacker in the draft.

The Browns hosted wide receiver Tank Dell which seems to throw off their normal draft process thinking due to Dell's age. The are also hosting wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. With Hyatt and Simpson in on visit's it seems to say that Berry could seriously be looking to trade up in this draft as both players are considered top 45 talents. So they could move picks, or a rostered player to rise into the second round.

The Cleveland Browns have a star running back in Nick Chubb but as of now this is the least proven running back room in Chubb's tenure in Berea. The in-house options offer some appeal in Jerome Ford but he saw such limited action no true verdict could be determined.

NFL Free agency is never going to offer answers as far as the position is concerned but there could be some value in a dual threat back such as Jet McKinnon. After that you're looking at guys who would to camp to compete, nothing guaranteed.

Now the 2023 NFL Draft offers several options for Andrew Berry to upgrade the room and build it towards the though of life without Nick Chubb. Tank Bigsby comes in as a guy who can be the full time running back one day in the dawg pound. Devon Achane offers a home run threat who could find plenty of running lanes while coverage is focused on all the talented receiving threats. Kenny McIntosh comes in with a championship pedigree and does it all at the position. Sean Tucker's health is a question but his game is not, his medical re-check is crucial.

In this episode of the Locked On Browns Podcast we discuss Donovan Peoples-Jones potential to have a breakout year in 2023. DPJ had a career year last year and looks to improve on those numbers with the help of QB Deshaun Watson. As NFL free agency rages on, or more appropriately rolls on like a slow-moving babbling brook, the Cleveland Browns have made a number of moves to improve their defense while retaining Ethan Pocic as their starting center on offense.

One move that many are wondering about is whether the team will add another receiver to their mix. Amari Cooper was a big addition last year with Donovan Peoples-Jones playing the second receiver role well. Finding a third receiver is still something fans and media would like to see. Whether the Browns value that as much is yet to be determined. While Cooper has been well-paid throughout his career, as a sixth-round selection Peoples-Jones is still waiting for that to happen. He is scheduled for free agency at the end of the 2023 NFL season unless Cleveland gets an extension done with him before then. In 2022, DPJ earned just under $900,000. The NFL announced the top 25 players who earned performance-based based distributions for 2022. PBP is described by the league as:

Under the Performance-Based Pay program, a fund is created and used as a supplemental form of player compensation based on a comparison of playing time to salary. Players become eligible to receive a bonus distribution in any regular season in which they play at least one official down. In general, players with higher playtime percentages and lower salaries benefit most from the pool. Last year, Peoples-Jones got the 11th largest bonus in the NFL at $717,642. Marcus Epps of the Philadelphia Eagles topped the list with $880,354. The bonuses do not impact teams’ salary cap numbers at all. The NFL and NFLPA wanted to put in place a way to benefit underpaid players, especially those on rookie contracts or veterans generally later in their careers.
