Locked On Browns - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Browns

Former UVA safety and two-time Super Bowl Champion Juan Thornhill is headed to the Cleveland Browns out of free agency. Former Virginia safety and two-time Super Bowl Champion Juan Thornhill has a new home in the National Football League. After spending the first four seasons of his professional career with the Kansas City Chiefs, Thornhill signed a three-year, $21 million contract to join the Cleveland Browns, as first reported on Wednesday by the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Two-time Super Bowl winner Juan Thornhill agreed to terms with the #Browns on a three-year, $21 million contract with $14 million fully guaranteed at signing over the first two years, per sources. Thornhill started 52 games for the Kansas City Chiefs and is a big addition for the Cleveland Browns.

After an impressive career as a defensive back for the UVA football program, the Altavista, Virginia native was selected by the Chiefs with the 63rd overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Thornhill had an excellent rookie season with three interceptions, but tore his left ACL late in the year and watched from the sidelines as the Chiefs beat the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. Kansas City reached the Super Bowl the next season and the AFC Championship Game the year after that, but came up short of winning it all.  This season, the Chiefs reached the mountaintop again and Juan Thornhill played a pivotal role, recording five tackles and a pass breakup in Kansas City's 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII, earning Thornhill his second Super Bowl ring. Thornhill was brilliant in the entire postseason run for the Chiefs, grading at 90.5 on Pro Football Focus over his final five games, the top mark in the NFL among safeties during that period.

In 65 total appearances and 52 starts over four seasons with the Chiefs, Thornhill recorded eight interceptions, one pick-six, 20 passes defended, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, five tackles for loss, and 234 total tackles. In 2022, Thornhill had three interceptions, nine passes defended and 71 tackles.

Trying to address the team’s biggest need, the Cleveland Browns signed veteran defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson to a four-year contract. Tomlinson was arguably the best run defender on the market and joins a team that struggled mightily to stop the run in 2022. He will make an immediate impact and is a true three-down player that can have an impact as a pass rusher as well. As general manager Andrew Berry has said before his scouting department begins looking at offseason targets during the season. Clearly, they saw the deficiencies in the run defense early on and targeted someone who could make a difference in fixing that issue. Tomlinson does a bit of everything as a three-down player that can affect each aspect of the opposing offense. He has significant hand usage and his strength paired with the leverage he plays with helps him to discard offensive linemen and attack the ball carrier or quarterback. Dalvin Tomlinson had some excited thoughts to share on playing with Myles Garrett and what to expect overall “I’m super excited to play with Myles. I’m excited to get out there and meet everybody and build some chemistry with the rest of the defensive line and go out here and make some plays. You can expect a dawg. A guy who wants to help everybody get better and now be selfish on the field. We’re only as strong as our weakest link. I’m going to bring everybody together and go out here and get some wins.” Tomlinson seems eager and excited about the team his is joining this season and fans should look forward to what he will bring to the table.

The Cleveland Browns made their first splash to upgrade their defensive line in NFL free agency by landing the pressure machine in defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo on a three-year deal that can be worth up to $22 million. As they let Jadeveon Clowney walk this offseason following his tumultuous departure from the team, the Browns now have their running mate opposite of Myles Garrett. Here we take a look at the signing, how Okoronkwo fits in Jim Schwartz’s defense, the financial side of the deal, and more to grade out the signing. Spoiler alert: this is a pretty great deal between the Browns and Okoronkwo. While Okoronkwo only managed five sacks this past season with the Texans, he managed to hit opposing quarterbacks an additional 11 times as well. A step further, Okoronkwo racked up pressures at the same rate as Garrett and Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys. According to PFF, he graded out with a pass rushing grade of 81.9 for the Texans in 2022. While he did not grade out exceptionally as a run blocker, Okoronkwo’s tape shows a player who is not afraid to initiate contact and set a strong edge. The pass rushing numbers are eye-popping even if the sacks have not come to fruition, and his run defense is fine at worst. The Browns were able to sign a player who gets after the quarterback as much as Garrett and Parsons for the price of just $6.3 million per year, capping out at potentially $22 million throughout his three-year deal. Okoronkwo’s base deal is for $19 million over three years with the Browns. By all means, this is a mid-to-low-end contract financially, and the ceiling of what Okoronkwo can be with the Browns far exceeds that. Do not be surprised if the Browns and Okoronkwo are speaking again next offseason about a new deal after his production opposite Garrett skyrockets.

With the Houston Texans in position to grab one of the top-four quarterbacks in this year’s NFL Draft (Alabama’s Bryce young, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State, Florida Gators passer Anthony Richardson or Kentucky’s Will Levis) who would be their best fit? Meanwhile the Kansas City Chiefs look to saddle Patrick Mahomes with a top-end pass-catching threat as they look to ward off surging teams like the Los Angeles Chargers, the revamped Denver Broncos led by new head coach Sean Payton and the Miami Dolphins and their new cornerback Jalen Ramsey. And with the Las Vegas Raiders having moved on from now-New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr, landing a signal caller should be at the top of their priority list as well. Our Locked On NFL Draft experts get you ready for the annual selection process.

Free agency is nearly upon us, and the Philadelphia Eagles could lose two of their veteran players.  Defensive end Brandon Graham and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox are both interested in joining the Cleveland Browns. The news was reported by Jared Mueller of SB Nation. One of the most beloved Eagles’ players, Brandon Graham, is the longest tenured athlete in Philadelphia. With 13 seasons under his belt, the 34-year-old prefers to finish his career in midnight green, but is open to signing elsewhere depending on the Eagles’ offer. Graham has a career total of 449 combined tackles, 70 sacks, 22 forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries. He completing a career-high 11 sacks this past season, and was one of four defensive players to finish with 10+ sacks, making NFL history.

The defensive end made the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2020, and has been significantly underrated during his career. He is now generating a lot of interest around the league, particularly from the Cleveland Browns. Also linked to the rumor is teammate Fletcher Cox. At 32 years old, Cox has seen better seasons, but after 11 professional years, the Browns are also interested in bringing him on board. Cox is a one-time First-Team All-Pro, three-time Second-Team All-Pro, and six-time Pro Bowler. While in Philadelphia, he’s completed 486 combined tackles, 65 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, and 13 fumble recoveries.

The move to Cleveland would reunite both Graham and Cox with former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Schwartz coached for Philadelphia from 2016-2021. Despite inheriting one of the worst defenses in the league, he turned the team around, putting them in the top-five before he departed. This January, he was hired by the Cleveland Browns. The Browns also employ two former Eagles executives who overlapped time with Graham — general manager Andrew Berry and assistant general manager Catherine Raiche. This past season, the Browns were last in the AFC North, finishing with a 7-10 record. On defense, they have a huge playmaker in Myles Garrett, but after that, help is sparse. As free agency looms, Cleveland will be look to gain serious playmakers. As for Philadelphia, Fletcher Cox is probably the most likely to go. Following the 2021 season, there were many rumors Cox would be traded. Now, a free agent, his contract value stands at $14 million.

The Cleveland Browns are once again gearing up to go big game hunting in free agency. Javon Hargrave is basically the perfect target for a JIm Schwartz defense, the Browns have the money and Hargrave appers interested. Can Andrew Berry make it happen. Dremont Jones has some appeal but the asking price looks to be crazy high. Yannick Ngakoue could be a fit but the money he may be seeking may not be in line with what the Browns feel his worth is.

Safrtes Jessie Bates and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson both bring upgrades to the position for Cleveland but one of them gives the defense more of an identity which could make the former eagle the more appealing option.

The Browns offseason, like many NFL teams, comes with annual rumors of players being shipped away, coaches being fired, and stars joining the roster to turn the team around and help push Cleveland to the ever-elusive Super Bowl. This year has been no different, and while there are some rumors circulating the fan base that do hold some weight, others are as far-fetched and not-happening as they come. First, addressing the rumors that have found their way to Twitter and subsequently other sites: Nick Chubb being on the trade block and the team shifting away from running the ball frequently. The rumor took off after reports from the NFL Combine suggested the Browns intend to shift their offensive mentality and go pass-heavy with quarterback Deshaun Watson, whom they hope to get back to his elite form this season after a rust-shaking return in 2022

League sources have indicated the Browns do have a desire to pass more — at least more efficiently, with Watson this season. If Watson can bounce back this year, it would not only be the goal of the Browns, it would behoove them to allow Watson to rip on a daily basis. But part of what makes any offense so dangerous, as head coach Kevin Stefanski outlined way back at his arrival in Cleveland in 2020, is a marriage of a strong pass and run game, and there have been discussions on how to evolve the run game further, mixing up runs out of the gun with other methods to keep defenses on their toes. Trading Chubb takes you out of that picture completely. Sure, you have running back Jerome Ford who showed plenty of promise in his rookie season, but Chubb is one of one—and the Browns know it. Chubb is a valued member of the team and one they plan to keep around this season. His contract sets him up to become a free agent in 2025, and trading him this year would only give the Browns at most a $10 million cap savings while likely not getting enough of a return in terms of draft picks for a 27-year-old running back (yes, even one-of-one Chubb). The central theme around the Chubb trade rumor is clearing cap space for the Browns to be more aggressive in free agency. With the Browns currently $13 million over the cap, general manager Andrew Berry will need to do that, but the contract savant has other methods of getting that done.First, restructuring Watson's mega contract will be top of mind. The restructure doesn't say they regret the $230 million guaranteed deal they penned. It's a numbers game to make the most of the money available to spend to set the roster up for success. During the NFL Combine, Berry spoke to the possibility of restructuring Watson's contract this season.

The pass catchers and the Quarterbacks took to the center stage at the NFL Combine Saturday. Ohio State's Jaxon Smith_Njigba who's had a really rough last six months reintroduced himself to the draft world with a knock-out workout and a record type Three cone drill. Sports Illustrated's Pete Smith joins to talk about other wide receivers who should be Browns targets. Anthony Richardson was impressive but CJ Stroud showed how special he can be. This tight end class is very well regarded but will it actually hit the expectations?

Former Tennessee edge rusher Byron Young has begun testing at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and his numbers have been top-tier. In the all-important 40-yard dash, Young ran a 4.48, putting him second among all edge rushers and defensive ends thus far, trailing just Georgia’s Nolan Smith, who ran a 4.44. Young’s 10-yard split of 1.62 seconds puts him in fourth place in the position. Young’s vertical was measured at 38 inches, again putting him second behind Smith so far. In the last of his completed tests so far, Byron Young measured an 11-foot broad jump, putting him atop the edge and defensive end leaderboard. Young still needs to do his three-cone drill, shuttle, and bench press, but his numbers so far, especially when put up against others at the position who have tested, are very encouraging. Byron Young is a projected mid-round pick, but his combine results could help to move that projection in a positive direction. Wednesday at his combine press conference, Young shouted out the Tennessee program, especially Defensive Line Coach Rodney Garner. In two years at Tennessee, Young racked up 12.5 sacks and 23.5 tackles-for-loss, earning an All-SEC First Team coaches’ selection in 2022.
