Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins signed veteran forward Tyler Johnson to a professional tryout over the weekend. The two-time Stanley Cup champion will come to training camp without a contract for the upcoming season and will try to earn a spot with the black and gold.

Johnson most recently played for the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring 17 goals in 67 games last season.

While he's past his prime days with the Tampa Bay Lightning, he's still got some gas in the tank, and Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down what Johnson's presence at camp means and how it could impact younger guys like Matthew Poitras, Justin Brazeay, Georgii Merkulov, and Fabian Lysell.

Plus, Brad Marchand hosted a captain's practice this morning and Jeremy Swayman was there, so that's a good sign.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren recaps the major events surrounding the team this summer: the Linus Ullmark trade, drafting Dean Letourneau, signing Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov, and the ongoing Jeremy Swayman contract negotiation.

What's the impact of these moves? Will the team be better in 2024-25?

Plus, a note on the tragic passing of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.

With only a few days remaining in August, the Jeremy Swayman contract saga drags on. There was a report earlier this week that's he asking for $10M annually on his deal, and while that's yet to be corroborated, recent comments made by the goaltender suggest he is indeed taking a strong stand in negotiations.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down Swayman's understanding that the cap is going up, his comparables, and how he can't ruin the goalie market for other guys that are going to be in his shoes down the line.

Looking at his numbers, Swayman is an elite goalie. But, he doesn't have the accolades of some of his peers. The balance is paying for what's expected vs. what's been achieved. At Swayman's age, though, surely the hardware is coming.

Plus, some comments on Andrew Raycroft's take on the challenge ahead for Swayman as the bona fide No. 1 in Boston.

It's a miscellaneous topic Friday on Locked on Boston Bruins!

Host Ian McLaren breaks down team president Cam Neely's confidence in getting a deal done with Jeremy Swayman despite reports they two sides are far apart in length and value.

Next, a look at the NHL's Top 20 center list and the lack of Bruins on it. Could Elias Lindholm make it next summer?

And are the Bruins in danger of having the wheels fall off? Probably not with Swayman, David Pastrnak, and Charlie McAvoy to build around.

The Montreal Canadiens took a gamble by acquiring Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets, and it's a smart one that shows how well run the Habs are and makes them more dangerous in the Atlantic Division.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down what Laine to the Habs means for the Bruins. For starters, it removes any possibility of the Canadiens signing Jeremy Swayman to an offer sheet. It also means the Bruins need to level up offensively to contend with all the star power in the Atlantic Division.

To that end, the Bruins are reportedly considering a PTO for Kailer Yamamoto.

ESPN has released point projections for the 2024-25 National Hockey League season, and Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren is analyzing what they're expecting from our Boston Bruins.

David Pastrnak will have another elite season to lead the team in scoring and prove he's a Hart Trophy candidate, while Charlir McAvoy needs a bump in offensive production to jump into the highest tier of defensemen.

Jeremy Swayman will have a career year in starts and wins as the clear cut #1 goalie, although he still needs a contract. He expects one to be signed soon, though, as he shared after participating in a triathlon over the weekend.

It's PTO season in the NHL, and the Boston Bruins will surely be looking to invite a forward or two to training camp.

Locked on Boston Bruins host proposed two possible invites: Blake Wheeler and Tyler Johnson.

Yes, both are past their primes, but they can still contribute and  bring a hunger for a Cup in Wheeler's case / Cup experience in Johnson's case.

Milan Lucic is reportedly still hoping to play in the NHL, but this is a guy who burned his opportunity with the Bruins last season and should not be revisited.

NHL Network producers and analysts revealed their list of the top 20 wings in the NHL right now on Wednesday. Both David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand slipped in this year's NHL.com / NHL Network winger rankings.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren discusses while it kind of makes sense for an aging Marchand, Pastrnak was unfairly bumped from the top spot and even out of the top 3.

Marchand still being in the top 20 is a big deal, though.

Finally, a look at whether any other Bruins might make an appearance on this list anytime soon.

There were TWO offer sheets signed on Tuesday, both by the St. Louis Blues and involving Edmonton Oilers restricted free agents.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren jumps on the mic to discuss the possibility of an offer sheet for Jeremy Swayman, what it would cost in terms of compensation, and what team has the means to do so. Beware the Montreal Canadiens here.

Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs offered an update and believes the two sides will reach a deal, but an offer sheet remains a possibility the longer this goes on.
