Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

Deep into August, James van Riemsdyk and Kevin Shattenkirk remain unrestricted free agents. While they weren't going to be highly coveted at this point in their careers, Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren wonders whether general manager Don Sweeney could circle back on the veterans once Jeremy Swayman is signed.

At 35, they won't provide premium value, but the Bruins could use cheap, established veterans, and in the case of JvR, a guy who's hungry for a Stanley Cup and who could push the younger players to live up to the moment.

Swayman is the domino that needs to fall in order for the cap space to be revealed, and the podcast ends with an update on his contract situation.

Deep in the dog days of summer, the Boston Bruins still have a few things to take care of before training camp.

The biggie is signing Jeremy Swayman, and they also need to get new backup Joonas Korpisalo up to speed to avoid a huge drop-off when their new No. 1 needs a break.

Also in there is adding some options on the wing to boost the scoring and/or give young guys like Fabian Lysell a push.

The returns of Linus Ullmark and Jake DeBrusk to Boston will highlight the Bruins schedule in November this season.

The Bruins will host Ullmark and the Ottawa Senators and Jake DeBrusk - along with Danton Heinen and Derek Forbort - and the Vancouver Canucks that month. Jeremy Swayman will be playing against his best friend for the first, while Nikita Zadorov and Elias Londholm will be facing off against their former mates after having played the Calgary Flames earlier in the month.

Locked on Bruins host Ian McLaren previews the month of November, and looks back to how the Bruins fared during the same time period last season.

Let's be honest - the Boston Bruins had a fairly soft schedule to begin last season, and, to their credit, they took full advantage of it with a fantastic record in the opening month.

That won't be the case in 2024-25, though, and the Bruins will need to bring new players up to speed - especially Joonas Korpisalo - to come out with a winning record.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren compares Boston's schedule in October 2024 to October 2025, and why the Bruins can't afford to drop points. The pressure will be on Korpisalo to perform, and maybe also on Jeremy Swayman to carry a heavier load.

The Boston Bruins are betting on Fabian Lysell and/or Georgi Merkulov to add some scoring depth, but probably still need to hedge those bets with external options. One name off that list Daniel Sprong, who signed a very team friendly $975,000 deal with the Vancouver Canucks over the weekend.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren discusses why Sprong would have been a good option for the Bruins despite some questions marks, and why the Bruins should still contemplate adding a winger or two. That's once they know how much cash they have to work with as the Jeremy Swayman contract is still pending.

Plus, sincere condolences to the family of Mike Loftus.

Today on Locked on Boston Bruins, host Ian McLaren performs a summer Cup check, a look at the top 5 teams around the NHL and where Boston ranks among them.

We look at Fanduel odds and ESPN / NHL power rankings to determine where the Bruins rank after NHL free agency.

Are the Bruins Stanley Cup contenders? While the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers remain the favorites, it's pretty wide open after that, so why not?
