Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

Jeremy Swayman is not in attendance as the Boston Bruins take to the ice for training camp on Thursday.

Who's the blame for this contract stalemate? Is it general manager Don Sweeney and Bruins management for not wanting to pay up? Or is it on the player for asking for too much, too soon?

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren argues it's a bit of both.

Plus, what else we learned from Sweeney and head coach Jim Montgomery (who's also in need of a contract extension) on Day 1 of camp, including a goaltending contingency plan, how to incorporate new faces, the Tyler Johnson PTO and more.

There's a bunch of smoke out there with respect to Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins agreeing to a new deal as training camp begins today.

The goaltending situation is one big question as camp opens. Even with Swayman in the mix, Locked on Bruins host Ian McLaren wonders who will be his backup seeing as both Brandon Bussi and Joonas Korpisalo require waivers to be sent down to the AHL.

Expect Swayman to play the majority of games, though.

Next, a look at the forwards, highlighted by the addition of Elias Lindholm. Will Fabian Lysell grab the 2RW spot? Will Tyler Johnson make the team? Will Matthew Poitras start in the AHL?

Fewer questions on defense, where Nikita Zadorov is ready to pop as a fan favorite.

A few Boston Bruins put in very strong showings at the Prospects Challenge in Buffalo over the weekend, namely Brett Harrison and Jackson Edward. Those two have a chance at playing for the big club one day, but the likelihood is most of the guys playing over the weekend won't sniff NHL action.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down how to evaluate prospects, and why it's important to temper expectations. The NHL is a hard league to crack, after all.

Plus, a daily update on Jeremy Swayman, who remains unsigned, and unworthy (yet) of a big time contract according to one prominent Bruins writer.

While there are some new faces and young players looking to make an impact for the Boston Bruins this season, there's also 3 established guys needing big seasons for both personal and team success.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down why Trent Frederic, Brad Marchand, and Jeremy Swayman need to step up. Frederic is looking to establish himself as a core Bruin, Marchand is playing for a new deal and his legacy as captain, and Swayman will (ideally) be looking to justify his big new contract.

The episode ends with the very latest on that front, by the way.

Boston Bruins rookies gathered for a mini camp in advance of the Prospects' Challenge in Buffalo this weekend. NOT present were Fabian Lysell and Georgii Merkulov, who are being given extra time to be ready for training camp next week.

Every opportunity will be given to Lysell to play on the 2nd line with Charlie Coyle and Brad Marchand.

There are some rookies to keep an eye on, though: Riley Duran, John Farinacci, Frederic Brunet, and Trevor Kuntar.

Plus, scratch Kailer Yamamoto from a potential PTO.

On paper, the Boston Bruins have a pretty nice group of 6 or 7 defensemen. But while the team allowed few goals last season, they were regularly outshot, and they won't have the luxury of 2 elite goalies.

Can the core 4 of Charlie McAcvoy, Brandon Carlo, Nikita Zadorov, and Hampus Lindholm lock things down for Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo to make key saves?

Can Mason Lohrei continue to emerge as a dynamic option? And will Andrew Peeke and Parker Wotherspoon push each other for the 7th spot?

Plus, an updated look at the Prospects Challenge schedule coming up this weekend.

There will be quite a lot at stake for Boston Bruins forwards when training camp opens next week.

While the top line of Pavel Zacha, Elias Lindholm, and David Pastrnak is set, there's the question of who will play right wing alongside Charlie Coyle and Brad Marchand. Fabian Lysell will get a shot, but others will be in the mix too: Morgan Geekie, Trent Frederic, even Tyler Johnson.

That battle will help decide the bottom 6. Is a trio of Max Jones - John Beecher - Mark Kastelic a lock for the fourth line? Is Matthew Poitras going to start the season in the AHL? What about Justin  Brazeau and other candidates from the AHL.

Plus, Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren discusses the PWHL Boston name and logo reveal!

After years of stability, there's suddenly some instability in the Boston Bruins crease.

All that could be fixed with a Jeremy Swayman contract, and Ian McLaren brings you the latest on those negotiations, as well as Joonas Korpisalo's fresh start and the possibility of Brandon Bussi starting the season as NHL backup.

Pray for Goalie Bob, folks.

Brad Marchand hosted a Captains' practice on Tuesday, after which he revealed he underwent 3 offseason surgeries and is behind on his normal summer training.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down what this means for Marchand and the team with a focus on the captain entering the final year of a very team-friendly deal through his prime offensive output years.

Marchand doesn't want to talk about his contract, and says he expects to be ready for training camp, but won't exactly becoming in hot. What's clear is he's expecting to remain a key member of the club with a view to making Team Canada for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
