Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins have never been in this position.

Never have they been preparing for a draft without a 1st or 2nd round pick.

So, where did all the picks go, and who's their best ever 3rd round selection?

Oh, and the draft situation could be even more empty next year as well.

Plus, some news and notes from around the NHL including the sale of the Ottawa Senators and Bruce Cassidy on the verge of winning a Stanley Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Pierre-Luc Dubois isn't going to sign an extension with the Winnipeg Jets, and could be a candidate to fill the top-line center role with the Boston Bruins.

Ideally, Dubois plays a season or two with Patrice Bergeron still around to learn from one of the game's all-time centers.

But, can the Bruins pull off a trade for Dubois? And do they have the cap space to sign him?

Huge questions that could be moot if Dubois is intent on playing for the Montreal Canadiens, but Ian McLaren offers some ideas on how it could happen.

With the disappointment of a first round exit still hanging in the air, we turn our attention to the Boston Bruins offseason plans.

A lot hinges on whether Patrice Begeron and David Krejci decide to come back. If they play on cheap contracts, it makes their binus overages easier to swallow; if they retire, the Bruins are stuck with $4.5M in dead cap space.

Either way they'll be looking for cap relief, with Taylor Hall, Charlie Coyle, Matt Grzelcyk, Derek Forbort, and Linus Ullmark all candidates to be moved.

There's also a bunch of restricted and unrestricted free agents on the roster with very little money to work with. Does Trent Frederic move? Will Jeremy Swayman be anointed as the top goalie? Can they re-sign Tyler Bertuzzi?

It's going to be an interesting summer, folks!

Don Sweeney did all he could.

The Boston Bruins general manager is up for GM of the year because he built the best regular season team of all time.

Locked on Bruins host Ian McLaren looks back at Sweeney's big moves and how he gave the team its best chance to win.

Sweeney did make one major gaffe though, and it still needs to be formally rectified.

This coming offseason will be a big one though as he deals with the aftermath of losing in the first round with limited resources.

It's the one-year anniversary of Bruce Cassidy being fired by the Boston Bruins. Today, he's 2 wins away from winning the Stanley Cup with the Vegas GOlden Knights.

Ian McLaren reviews the decision to part ways with Cassidy and assesses Jim Montgomery's first season behind the Bruins bench.

What went right? A lot, during the regular season at least. But the playoffs were a different story.

Still, it's not as simple as saying the Bruins would be in the Final with Cassidy still behind the bench.

Find out why on a fresh episode of Locked on Boston Bruins.

The Boston Bruins had a very veteran heavy roster in 2022-23, and it paid off with a record setting regular season.

The team is facing a cap crunch, though, and might have to rely on younger players on entry level or minor deals or more established AHL guys on budget contracts.

Ian McLaren takes a look at how some fringe players and prospects performed at the NHL and AHL level, and names some candidates to contribute to the big club in 2023-24.

Could one Connor replace another? Is it Georgii Merkulov season? All that and more!

It's still hard to believe the Florida Panthers are in the Stanley Cup Final and the Boston Bruins are not.

Ian McLaren takes another look at what went wrong in the opening round, how the Bruins would have matched up against the Vegas Golden Knights, whether things would have been different if Bruce Cassidy was still head coach, and who to root for in the Final (if you can stomach watching).

Plus, a look at when the Bruins might actually be back in the Final.

Don Sweeney swung big at the trade deadline, adding a trio of players to the Boston Bruins: Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov, and Garnet Hathaway.

Ian McLaren takes a look at what they brought to the table, what the Bruins gave up, and whether any of them will be back with the team next season.

Bertuzzi is unlikely (unless they can clear space), Orlov is a no, Hathaway is a maybe.

It all would have been so much sweeter if they had won. Sigh.

The season in review series continues with a look at the Boston Bruins most common third pairing on the blue line: Connor Clifton and Derek Forbort.

On the surface, they were contributors to the best regular season in NHL history that allowed the fewest goals per game around the league. They also were very helpful on the penalty kill.

They were better apart than together, though, and the Bruins erred in sticking with Forbort for all 7 games against Florida.

Clifton is a free agent, Forbort has one season left on his deal. Could both be goners?
