Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins signed Marc McLaughlin to a one-year, two-way contract on Tuesday. He'll have an opportunity to crack the NHL lineup, but that's far from guatanteed.

Ian McLaren then dives into the defensive pairings and how the approach for next season appears to be maintaining a strong back end in order to offset some losses up front. Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, Matt Grzelcyk, and Brandon Carlo will lock down the top 4, but there will be a battle for playing time on the third pairing between Kevin Shattenkirk, Derek Forbort, Jakub Zboril, and Ian Mitchell.

Who will get the upper hand?

Plus, send in some mailbag questions for tomorrow's podcast!

One potential arbitration hearing is off the books as defenseman Ian Mitchell signed a 1-year deal.

Who is this guy, and what could he bring to the Boston Bruins?

Trent Frederic and Jeremy Sway do have arbitration hearing dates set for later this summer, by the way.

Plus, Ian McLaren takes an early look at what the opening night lines might be, assuming Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci aren't back.

It won't be as deep of a group, but could be fun to watch still and there will be opportunities for guys to step up.

Filip Zadina won't be there, though, as he signed with the San Jose Sharks.

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney met with the media after the conclusion of development camp on Friday, and addressed the following:

Plus, Boston's 2024 1st round pick could be on the move again after the Ottawa Senators traded Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings.

Filip Zadina's contract with the Detroit Red Wings will be terminated on Friday, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Boston Bruins should absolutely try to sign the 6th overall pick from 2018 to see if he can become the elite goal scorer he was projected to be.

The Bruins have already signed Milan Lucic and James van Riemsdyk to bargain deals - why not do the same with a player who has so much more upside?

Look at what happened with Pavel Zacha when he came over from New Jersey.

Plus, Matt Poitras is impressing at development camp, but the Bruins have some things they want to see him improve on back in the OHL this season.

Jeremy Swayman and Trent Frederic filed for arbitration on Wednesday.

Ian McLaren outlines the arbitration process, discusses what comes next, and why it isn't cause for too much concern ... yet.

Kevin Shattenkirk and Morgan Geekie met with the media via zoom, and are both excited about what they can bring to the Boston Bruins in 2023-24.

And Jakub Lauko is officially signed for the next two seasons, but NHL time is only guaranteed in 2024-25.

James van Riemsdyk is well past his prime, but can bring some value to the Boston Bruins on a 1-year, $1-million dollar deal.

His numbers were down the past couple seasons, but expect him to use his size and skill to his advantage under head coach Jim Montgomery.

Plus, Fabian Lysell hits the ice at development camp, why we need to be patient with Bruins' younger prospects, and the Bruins are in need of a new assistant coach after John Gruden gets Toronto's AHL head coaching gig.

Don't assume the slew of signings on July 1 means younger players won't be given a chance to crack the opening night roster for the Boston Bruins.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, "Bruins have a lot of young players they are hoping take some bigger roles next season - John Beecher, Marc McLaughlin, Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov, Jakub Lauko....next year will be about who grabs a spot in a year of opportunity and theyll make decisons next summer."

So, Milan Lucic, James van Riemsdyk, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Patrick Brown will have to work hard to keep their spots becuse they can be easily sent to the AHL.

Morgan Geekie, though, will have a bigger role than he did in Seattle.

Plus, Mason Lohrei impresses early at development camp, and Fabian Lysell is taking it easy because of a head injury.

When Taylor Hall was dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks last week, the expectation among fans was the Boston Bruins were clearing space to re-sign Tyler Bertuzzi.

Not the case.

The Bruins needed to clear space to fill out the roster, and the did that on July 1 by signing Milan Lucic, James van Riemsdyk, Kevin Shattenkirk, Morgan Geekie, and Patrick Brown to deal that equal Hall's old cap hit.

Ian McLaren breaks down the signings, why the Bruins took this approach, and how Bertuzzi ended up with the rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

And still, theyr'e left with $6.2M to sign Jeremy Swayman, Trent Frederic, and hopefull Patrice Bergeron.

A full recap of the sytart of free agency for the Bruins on today's episode!

The Boston Bruins made a handful of mid to late round picks at the NHL Draft on Thursday, and host Ian McLaren offers a brief look at what you need to know about Chris Pelosi, Beckett Hendrickson, Ryan Walsh, Casper Nassen, and Kristian Kostadinski.

All attention now turns to free agency, where Don Sweeney doesn't sound optimistic about signing Tyler Bertuzzi or Garnet Hathaway.

Milan Lucic is on the radar, though, and they'll need to she more cap space via trades or buyouts to do anything more significant.

First priority is re-signing restricted free agents Trent Frederic and Jeremy Swayman, and even that will be tight.

Milan Lucis and the Boston Bruins will reportedly be reunited and Ian McLaren discusses why it feels so good despite his advanced age and a game that's not really built for today's NHL.

The Bruins need to fill out the bottom six on the cheap, and Lucic in a centennial jersey will be so fun to see plus good for marketing.

Boston wasn't able to move into the first round of the NHL Draft, but have five picks on deck during day two. Who know who they'll pick, but there's one d-man who'd be a great scoop.

Yes, there's some trepidation about Boston's lack of moves so far, but the cap is prohibitive. Don Sweeney built the beat regular season team of all time, and we're willing to let him cook and see what the team looks like on opening night before making judgement.
