Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins still have a lot of work to do after freeing up cap space by trading Taylor Hall.

They have np picks in the first or second round of the NHL Draft, and they'll try to get in on the action, but it will cost them Trent Frederic, Linus Ullmark, or Jeremy Swayman.

Ian McLaren breaks down what Don Sweeney and Cam Neely were saying about Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, their unrestricted free agents, breaking up the goalie tandem, and more.

It was a busy Monday for the Boston Bruins.

It began with the trade of Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno's negotiating rights to the Chicago Blackhawks for restricted free agent defensemen Alec Regula and Ian Mitchell.

The Bruins needed to shed some salary cap space, and while the expectation is they'll circle back on trying to sign Tyler Bertuzzi, there's still a lot of work to be done with 9 empty roster spots and $11M in available space.

Boston was also well represented at the NHL awards, with Patrice Bergeron, Linus Ullmark, and Jim Montgomery taking home major hardware.

Ian McLaren breaks it all down and tries to put 2022-23 in perspective on today's episode of Locked on Bruins.

As the Boston Bruins continue to lament an early playoff exit, the regular season is being celebrated at tonight's NHL Awards.

And rightfully so. It was a banger.

Linus Ullmark and Jim Montgomery are first time finalists and likely first time winners of the Vezina and Jack Adams.

They both had interesting things to say Sunday about their outlooks for next season and maybe even the possibility of the goalie being moved.

Plus, why Patrice Bergeron won't be in attendance as he goes for his 6th Selke, and why David Pastrnak probably won't win his awards but Don Sweeney will.

In the spirit of Justin Bourne's old "Thoughts on Thoughts" column for theScore where he would comment on Elliotte Friedman's weekly column, Ian McLaren is breaking down the latest from Fluto Shinzawa's Athletic piece called "What I’m hearing about the Bruins’ pursuit of cap space, potential trade bait, Bergeron, Krejci, more."

Lert's discuss Matt Grzelcyk's seemingly imminent departure, the possibility of splitting up Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman, Connor Clifton's likely departure, and what to make of "One teammate, who requested anonymity because of his respect for Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, told The Athletic he’s not counting on either being back."

It's no secret the Bruins are in a major salary cap crunch. So, they may need to sign some low-risk, mid-reward guys in free agency.

Some names they've been linked to are Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Milan Lucic, and Kevin Hayes.

Ian McLaren discusses the merits of each option, and offers the latest update on Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Plus, we have Boston's preseason schedule!

The Boston Bruins signed goaltender Brandon Bussi to a one-year, two-way contract extension through the 2023-24 season with an NHL cap hit of $775,000.

Don't fret, though; it's unlikely Bussi is the backup at the NHL level this season because he hasn't even made his Bruins debut.

What is most likely is Jeremy Swayman signing a one-year deal at a lower value than he deserves with the promise of bigger bucks when the team's cap hit is more managable.

If he's not open to that, though, it could result in Linus Ullmark being dealt, and Ian McLaren explores some free agent options to fill his spot if that happens.

The Boston Bruins will attempt to redeem themselves in 2023-24 after following up an historic regular season with a baffling playoff collapse.

They'll do so with very limited salary cap space and possibly without Patrice Bergeron and/or David Krejci.

Going from Presidents' Trophy to out of the playoffs would be ultra embarassing, but it's not out of the realm off possibility.

Ian McLaren discusses what's at stakes for the Bruinas this offseason, why they're in this position, and how they can navigate these complicated waters.

It's time to open up the Locked on Boston Bruins mailbag, and Ian McLren is answering the following questions:

"Given how the season ended. And being close to so many leaf fans. Did your reaction mirror leaf fans crushing disappointment?"

"What is the state of the Atlantic Division and is Orlov coming back?"

"w/ Bertuzzi’s strong playoff performance and what seemed like strong chemistry w/ Pasta, would you move someone like Hall to prioritize keeping Bertuzzi?"

"I'm not a fan of trading Hall at all to make room for Bertuzzi. Do you think they should and if so why ? Bertuzzi is a small sample size ! Wouldn't it be better to allow younger players move up ? Plus Ulmark , trade him now or run it back with him and Sway?"

"Who are you most excited to see play for the Pride this year?

"If you could pick a new themed alternate jersey for the Bruins this year what would you pick?"

And more!

With the 2023 Stanley Cup decided, the offseason begins with the opening of the NHL's buyout window.

The Bruins have stated they will exercise this option to dump Mitchell Miller, and there are two other candidates for a buyout: Mike Reilly and Derek Forbort.

Host Ian McLaren discusses the implications of playing this card, and why the savings next season warrant the move.

You're also going to hear a lot about qualifying offers in the coming days, but what exactly does that mean?

Following a Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final, Bruce Cassidy said he just wanted his name on hockey's hallowed trophy.

His wish came true, but not with the Boston Bruins.

Cassidy, along with former Bruins Reilly Smith and Phil Kessel, won the Cup on Tuesday, and Ian McLaren puts a final pin in the conversation about whether it was the right decision to make a change behind the bench.

Plus, a look at how Smith and Kessel got from Boston to Vegas and the top of the hockey world.

Buyout window opens tomorrow, by the way. Farewell, Mitchell Miller.
