Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Canadiens took on the Lightning looking to avoid a season sweep against their Stanley Cup Final foes. In a wild, back and forth affair the Habs claimed a shootout victory with Nick Suzuki notching the winning goal on a slick move. Suzuki wasn't the only young star who was shining down in Florida however, as Cole Caufield continued his insane hot streak and several young defenders stepped up in a big way.

Scott and Laura take a look at Jordan Harris' debut, and how Justin Barron is currently adjusting to a full-time NHL role with the Canadiens. What can the team and fans expect from these young prospects moving forward, and what. can Alexander Romanov do to try and keep pace with a suddenly rapidly changing defensive group?

Finally it's Three Up, Three Down! The hosts discuss their down picks for the week including the seemingly lost Mike Hoffman, and continue to question what actually is goaltender interference in the NHL. On the up side however, Jordan Harris impressed in his first game, Cole Caufield continues to be unstoppable, and Jake Allen has been thriving despite a heavy workload and questionable NHL officiating around him.

The Montreal Canadiens lost to the Carolina Hurricanes, but we had a lot to say about Kent Hughes' longterm development plan going forward, including what they plan to do with Logan Mailloux's future with the organization. Habs mailbag questions this week included what coaching and front office staff the Canadiens need to work on getting next, who Lucas Condotta is, and our favourite players from the PWHPA.

Despite a travel day to Carolina, the Montreal Canadiens remained very busy across to organization as they prepare to take on the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. The team announced that it had signed 2021 fifth round pick Joshua Roy to an entry-level contract on Wednesday morning, a well-deserved deal considering how strong a year Roy has had in the QMJHL. The Sherbrooke Phoenix forward has 92 points on the year, second in the league and has been on fire since being cut from the World Juniors squad. Scott and Laura have some details on his contract, and muse on the thought of him joining the Laval Rocket when his season is over.

A radio interview with the Canadiens VP of Communications Chantal Machabée made the rounds on Twitter as she discussed how Cole Caufield has found a second wind after a disastrous start to his rookie season. With the revelation that Caufield was told to tone down who he is by the previous management group, is it any wonder why the Habs struggled to find long-term success? Scott and Laura take a look at how Cole got his swagger back, and what that means for the budding star going into the future.

Finally, it was the first day of practice for Jordan Harris and the hosts want to know, could he debut sooner than we thought? They also break down his press conference where he discussed why he finally signed with the Canadiens, and the impact Kent Hughes had on his decision. While Marc Bergevin and his team did draft Harris, Hughes appears to have been the voice that sold the 21 year old defender on a plan for the future, and that's perfectly okay to admit.

Nick Suzuki, future captain of the Montreal Canadiens? The Habs lost a difficult game against the Florida Panthers against whom Mike Hoffman struggled but Joel Edmundson excelled. We talk about how Nick Suzuki has hit the 50 point mark for the first time in his NHL career and the future of the leadership core of this team. Plus, the Laval Rocket are in the home stretch as they try to make the playoffs, so we talk about what we expect in the coming weeks from the Habs' AHL team.

The Montreal Canadiens were well represented at the NCAA Frozen Four tournament with seven prospects in all play. With just four teams left, that number is down to just two as Brett Stapley and Rhett Pitlick are set to play in the Frozen Four semi-finals next week. Scott however wants to make a note, that just because the stats aren't gaudy, that doesn't mean that the prospects didn't play well at the end of the day. Also, the hosts muse on whether or not Stapley can become another version of Jake Evans if he signs a contract with Montreal before his rights expire.

Jordan Harris has finally arrived and joined the Canadiens down in Florida, and will practice off the ice before their game against the Panthers on Tuesday. Scott and Laura discuss how he fits into the lineup, and how the debut of Justin Barron might help set the expectations properly for his eventual debut in Montreal.

The hosts also discuss the prospect of buying out players like Jonathan Drouin or Mike Hoffman this summer, and whether it's worth the trouble or if it's better to get any sort of trade return instead.

The GM meetings are also underway in Florida, Scott and Laura discuss the new proposals for penalty review and the LTIR situation. If the rules change surrounding LTIR, can Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton find a way to undo the work of Marc Bergevin?

The Habs had a busy weekend as they split a pair of games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils. The hosts dive into the win over Toronto, and what made it possible, namely the incredible play of goaltender Jake Allen. There's plenty of praise for the timely contributions of unexpected players such as Paul Byron and David Savard also factoring into the win.

While the Habs came up just short in a shootout to the Devils, the feisty, "never say die" attitude was apparent all night, and is a huge step in the right direction for the team. Both Scott and Laura look at what Martin St. Louis is doing to get the most out of this team, including big minutes for Alexander Romanov and Justin Barron.

Finally, it's 3 Up, and 3 Down with plenty of praise for Habs goalies, Cole Caufield, and also a lot of jeers for a fun rivalry that's been turned extremely nasty recently.

If the Montreal Canadiens can trade Jeff Petry in the offseason, who would we like to see in a return? Which young Habs defensemen are ready to start the season next year? Is Nick Suzuki the best centre possible for Cole Caufield? Would the Habs trade for Evgenii Dadonov? Plus, we talk about the Habs game against the Florida Panthers and the team being more resilient under Martin St Louis, and Jake Allen being heroic yet again.

Ty Smilanic - what does he bring to the Montreal Canadiens depth chart? Is he developing into a centre or more of a winger? What are his offensive and defensive strong suits/weaknesses?

How about the development of Jordan Harris, Jayden Struble, and Sean Farrell? When they do eventually join the Habs what can we expect?

How are Luke Tuch, Blake Biondi, and Jan Mysak doing? Among undrafted college free agents, which players should the Habs be keeping an eye on and why? Jack St Ivany and Parker Ford come to mind now that Jack McBain is off the board.

We will also look at the overall trades made since Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton took over the team and where we think the team is headed.
