Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal played a pair of games against the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals, with their efforts ranging from good to shambolic in the span of 48 hours. The hosts look at Nick Suzuki destroying a goal camera for his 20th goal of the year, and what continues to go wrong with the defensive pairs every single night. With just six games left, now is the time for the Canadiens to get creative and try out everything, including shuffling around veteran players if need be.

Also this weekend, the franchise icon, the backbone of the Canadiens, and your mom's favourite player, Carey Price returned to action for Montreal in a losing effort to the Islanders on Good Friday. Scott and Laura discuss his play, and how his return is potentially the biggest victory the Habs will notch this season, and also what it means emotionally to see #31 back between the pipes at the Bell Centre. With all due respect to Samuel Montembeault who was tasked with something nearly impossible, the return of Carey Price provides the Habs with something they've missed for most of this season.

Finally it's the return of Three Up, Three Down where Scott and Laura pick their ups and downs within the Canadiens organization for the last week. Somehow improbably Josh Anderson's antics towards Tom Wilson lands him on both lists, as the hosts discuss his role of being big brother for Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. Also on the way up is Mike Hoffman who had a very strong pair of games to end the week, as did Jesse Ylönen for the Laval Rocket. On the downside, the struggles of the David Savard/Alexander Romanov pairing can no longer be ignored, and it might be time for Jordan Harris to play a bigger role in the final six games.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Scott welcomes friend of the show Ian Boisvert in a special edition of the Friday Mailbag, but before the duo dive into listener questions they examine the success of the Laval Rocket this year, and how the team has struck a fine balance between winning and development. Despite their being very few bonafide NHL prospects on the team, the Rocket continue their march towards a playoff berth, which begs the question, should a few vets get some NHL time as a thank you if they clinch?

Then inside the Friday Mailbag, Scott and Ian discuss the future of Christian Dvorak and how he might have had the toughest lost season of anyone in the Canadiens organization, and what the long-term plan is for him. They also discuss the possibility of buying out Paul Byron to save some money, and if that's worthwhile considering the overall state of the team right now. Also plenty of discussion on AHL call ups, changing the goal song and which Hab has the best cooking recipe?

In honour of the woman who attempted to glue herself to the court at an NBA game, both hosts discuss the wildest way they could think to stage a protest at an NHL game, and argue over which way the toilet paper roll should go.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal played an absolute stinker in Columbus, losing 5-1 to the Blue Jackets in a game where they looked a lot like the Habs from earlier this year. Scott and Laura discuss how the game got away from the team, and if there can be any kind of rebound effort after a listless performance.

Tied into that, the AHL club, the Laval Rocket had a big test of their own, coming up just short in overtime to the Rochester Amerks. Scott breaks down the game, including a three point night for top prospect Jesse Ylönen in his return to the AHL. Both hosts discuss also how the success of the Rocket this year is such a long time in the making, and how that process will likely impact the NHL club as well. The duo also talk about the development of Jesse Ylönen and how his growth in North America makes him a prime target to make an NHL impact next season.

Finally, both hosts have had enough of the idea that the Canadiens have to lose ugly to tank effectively to end the regular season. With a top three pick all but assured for Montreal this year, what harm could it do to win some games down the stretch? The team has five playoff teams on their schedule in the last eight games, is it too much to ask the team to put together a strong run of play to end the year, and end this nightmare year with some pride?

Today we answer a few listener requests after discussing the Montreal Canadiens injury updates. The Habs have a laundry list of injuries but finally have the LTIR cap space to bring Carey Price back so we speculate on when he will return. We also choose our NHL playoff bandwagon teams in both conferences to answer a listener question. Finally, many listeners have asked us to discuss Logan Mailloux's on-ice upside and we share our thoughts on his on-ice potential.

We contrast the disappointing Montreal Canadiens loss to the Winnipeg Jets with the satisfying Laval Rocket win against the Belleville Senators and discuss what we hope to see from both teams. Which players on both teams are getting it done, and which players need to do more? Plus, major news in the playoff push elsewhere around the league.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal played a sloppy game against the New Jersey Devils, but overcame their defensive issues with a 7-4 stomping thanks in part to the combination of Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield once again. However, it was a full team effort on offence to clinch the game, with some much-needed offence from Joel Armia, Chris Wideman and Christian Dvorak. With Toronto looming on Saturday, can the Habs continue their opportunistic ways?

Diving into the mailbag a listener wants to know if there's a trade market for Cayden Primeau and if they Canadiens should be looking for another goaltending prospect in a deal. Scott disagrees given the progress Primeau has made this year, and that there are two very good prospects in Frederik Dichow and Jakub Dobes also in the pipeline.

What will Martin St. Louis' coaching staff look like next year? A big question facing Kent Hughes and the Habs head coach is what they do behind the bench in the off-season. RDS made it seem as though a change is imminent when the year is over, and that wouldn't be shocking to either host. However, the question then becomes, how will Martin St. Louis build his staff from there?

There's plenty more in the mailbag as well including the hosts biggest surprises this year, who likely gets moved this off-season and...Elden Ring?

Carey Price is travelling with the Montreal Canadiens to New Jersey, meaning he is getting closer to returning to playing for the Habs. We also discuss the Brendan Gallagher comments on Tim Stutzle after Tuesday's loss to the Senators, and whether Martin St Louis will be returning to the Canadiens next year. Plus, will Jayden Struble sign with the Habs this year or return to Northeastern for another year?

The Montreal Canadiens have signed Emil Heineman, and we take a look at what that means for the Habs and the Laval Rocket before moving on to our NHL Awards predictions and a quick look at what went wrong with Mike Hoffman in Montreal. We discuss who will win and who should win the Hart, the Calder, the Norris, the Selke and the Vezina awards this year, as there are quite a few deserving candidates.
