Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Additional bonus content: Shortly after the NHL Draft Lottery results were announced, Laura Saba of Locked On Canadiens sat down with Russ Cohen of Locked On Flyers, Erica Lindsay Ayala of Locked On Kraken, and Robyn Leaño of Locked On Coyotes to discuss the lottery results and how our respective teams fared and what they are likely to do with their picks. First, we discussed what type of player Shane Wright is and what he brings. We then talked about what each team might need and is likely to do - the Arizona Coyotes dropped a spot while the Philadelphia Flyers have had a rough couple of seasons, particularly in terms of culture, and the Seattle Kraken are trying to build their own team and their own identity over the next couple of years. Russ Cohen provided some insight into some of the players ranked in the top 5 for this year, while Erica explained how Seattle could use some size in their lineup, provided the talent is there. We also talked about which team we were happiest for and which team we would be most dejected for in this year's results.

Special guest Andrew Berkshire of SDPN joins Laura to discuss whether the narratives surrounding Montreal Canadiens players David Savard, Jonathan Drouin, and Josh Anderson are valid. First, we discuss the David Savard signing, and the perception that he is a bad defenseman - what do his numbers say and what is the best way for the Canadiens to use him going forward? We then talk about a lightning rod for criticism in Jonathan Drouin and discuss what he needs to maximize his potential on this team and whether the Habs will trade him. Finally, we discuss why Josh Anderson can't quite hit the 20 goal mark just yet and what the Canadiens need to do with him.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Mike Obrand(@HabsLaughs) joins Scott and Laura to first discuss the Canadiens' not so special, special teams play over the last few years. Mike breaks down where the team has found success, and where they've gone wrong, especially in regards to utilizing Cole Caufield's talents. Can a full off-season and training camp under Martin St-Louis bring about the creative changes the team needs to get back to even league average play?

It's also the Friday Mailbag, which means a ton of questions for all three participants. They'll discuss how to balance the Laval Rocket needing to win, with also developing their top prospects, and whether any of the high-end pieces on defence should even start next season in the NHL. Mike and Scott debate the qualities of Rem Pitlick, and if he can be a long-term asset for the Canadiens, or if he is going to be a strong trading piece heading into the next deadline. Also, can the Devils trade for Carey Price?

To put a neat bow on everything, the final segment has the trio discuss whether or not the Habs need the first overall pick to advance their rebuild, or if they can get by with other pieces in the first round. Finally, what can the Canadiens do short-term, and long-term in free agency to ensure forward progress for the franchise? Scott and Mike discuss names like Filip Forsberg, Phil Kessel and others as potential options for Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Can Josh Anderson fully realize his potential under Martin St-Louis? The speedy power forward came within inches of hitting 20 goals on the season, but still has yet to find consistent form in Montreal. While he started hot under St-Louis, injuries and a disappearing act away from Nick Suzuki hampered what looked like solid season. So the question becomes, can Josh Anderson develop a more well-rounded game to reach his potential ceiling?

The second player review of the show goes to Christian Dvorak, someone brought in immediately after Jesperi Kotkaniemi was offer sheeted away to the Carolina Hurricanes. Dvorak struggled through the first half of the season, but after returning from injury he became one of the Canadiens best players. What can Martin St-Louis do to get the most out of Dvorak next season, or is Dvorak going to suit up elsewhere next season?

Finally, Scott and Laura take a look at the first night of the NHL playoffs, including the Leafs and Lightning playing in a bloody blowout, and if the defending champs can get back on track. They'll also discuss the Department of Player Safety already failing in the playoffs, and the disastrous showing from Mike Smith in Edmonton.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal ended their season by dismantling the Florida Panthers 10-2 in front of a packed Bell Centre, sending fans home happy after a nightmarish season. Cole Caufield tallied his first NHL hat trick while Jordan Harris scored his first professional goal in the rout. Scott and Laura discuss how special it felt to hear the crowd chant for Guy Lafleur after scoring ten goals, and how important it was to end the season on a strong note after a slog of a season. The team still finished in last place, but that doesn't mean they didn't set some foundation for the next steps in Kent Hughes' rebuilding plan.

Saturday was locker cleanout day for the Habs as well, with a number of players speaking to the media about their futures and the season at large. The hosts look at the quotes about Shea Weber's immediate future, and how it feels like the end of an era in Montreal with a new captain being named for next season. They also discuss Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield's comments and how impressive they both are as young professional in an intense hockey market like Montreal.

Jeff Petry had a chance to clear the air a bit about his future with the Canadiens, and whether he'll be back next season or not. While Kent Hughes has said he'll do right by the player and the team, it seems like Petry found his groove again with Martin St-Louis at the helm. Scott and Laura also dig into Petry's thoughts about what went wrong with Dominique Ducharme, and how he tried to speak up for the locker room when things got bad.

Carey Price is going to be the centre of attention all summer for Habs fans and media alike, as both Price and Kent Hughes confirmed that he's not 100% and another surgery may be on the table. Price himself noted that his knee cannot hold up like it used to and that he isn't sure what his future looks like either, stating that he can't handle the workload like he used to. So the big question now becomes, did Carey Price just play his last game for the Montreal Canadiens against Florida?
